Was on the bench the week before and started in the halves in at least one game this year. Again rather see someone from flegg come up

As for Will? If we had our own cup team that problem doesn't exist.
Are 100% of the guys on those other Cup teams contracted to the NRL team? I’d guess no. It also wouldn’t be funded by the NRL, so you have to find that money to sign a bunch of guys to NSW Cup and T&T contracts.

Using halves is probably not the best example either. Flegg are missing both their starters too, so outside of Waitere they likely don’t have guys available who are capable of playing Cup.

For the most part they have been bringing in Flegg players for other positions. I guess JLG just got lucky.

Of course not.
Does a Cronulla nsw cup team sign Mansour to play ahead of Rodwell who has just aged out and can fill one of those contracts? I doubt it.

Yeah - that one’s a fair call. There are very few cup guys who play ahead of Sharks guys though - and sometimes those Cup contracts pan out. Are we sad in 2023 that Talakai and Hunt were taking minutes away from Dan Vasquez?

I think there is a bit of survivorship bias here around the Panthers. People see them having developed this insane team, and associate the NSW Cup situation with their success.

While the Panthers are indeed a wagon, no other team currently in the NRL top 10 have built their current squads over the last 5-6 years using the "3 grades all run by the main club" model. Teams 11, 15, 16 and 17 have though.

Dylan Edwards, Will Kennedy and Scott Drinkwater took three very different roads through feeder teams to get to the NRL, but they all got there. it seems to me that the system is doing what it is meant to do. Nobody could say that Edwards was "developed better" than those other two.

That’s personally how I’ve always seen it. If we can get a first grader or so out of each year and identify talent that’s the goal, but be nice to be successful too, makes it easier to enjoy.
It's funny to me that a lot of fans can see that Cup, Jersey Flegg etc. are primarily talent development leagues, but those same fans will go down and watch the local under 15 B's with the mindset that the coach is only doing a good job if the team is winning.

Agreed, but can't discount being invested in that team's performance more personally such as being a parent or one of your mates is playing.

I saw the U16s Cronulla Caringbah vs Como grand final on the weekend, was such high quality football, ET Stand was louder than most sharks games. We seem to have a really strong age group coming through there, lots of the players with high rep honours (CHS etc).

I know we only came 6th in Matthews Cup but I think a number of these players are in their first year of eligibility. Hopefully we can hold on to them. Some of the standouts for the winning CC team included Callum Grantham, Harlem Peters, Kaden Garner. But plenty of good players on both sides.

In the much further off pathways category, Paul Gallen-coached De La u12s continue to beat all comers, similar to Chad Townsend and Kyle Flanagan dynasties

Bradbury back for Flegg and Healey and Hosking have both dropped down now that the Jets aren’t playing.
Cheers. Waitere too. He's exceeded expectations this year imo.

I thought they may have dropped down Stonestreet and Puru, but I guess there is value in keeping those guys with the NRL squad for now.

Game will be live streamed on NSWRL TV. 11am Sunday.

Of the times I have seen Stonestreet he definitely looks the goods in height and speed but I think an off season where he can train more with the NRL squad and also put on some muscle would definitely benefit him. Ronnie and Sione are definitely our wingers for 2024 but we need someone who can put a bit of pressure on them. Ronnie has been playing like there is no one waiting in the wings to take his spot.

Also I think given our halves are make shift good to keep the combo going as they seem to be playing well
