Always a rocks or diamonds type of player at this stage .
Boulders today .
Lots to learn with decision making and to be able to be first grade consistent
Nobody really running angles in that mundane squad today didn't help
Hopefully gets into some rhythm at the Jets

I've supported Trindall but no point in sugar coating yesterday, he was ordinary at best. Poor defense, poor decision making, poor execution, poor discipline and he easily got frustrated, even more so than usual.

He's obviously trying too hard hard and is desperate for a spot in the squad and he didn't handle that pressure, he needed to help lead that young inexperienced team but showed the things not to do.

Disappointing

Yea forward pack and back line was outdone by panthers but we still had chances on their line that Trindall ruined with brain snaps and lack of focus and patience.

I am getting worried cause he has a real problem giving us more than 40 good minutes and then we have a day like yesterday where you get a bad 80 mins. His diamonds are more like Cubic zirconia - can look OK but not worth alot and there's plenty around.

Moylan is a genuine rocks and diamonds player not Trindall, but at least Moylan is consistent at being Matt Moylan and we know his qualities and drawbacks. What I mean by that is it tends to balance out far more than with Braydon.

Now Moylan is our 'safe' option hahaha what a funny world rugby league is but I am now agreeing with this assessment despite giving Trindall a tick for the All Stars game.

Money bags Chad or Flanjo is better than that display from Braydon who likely is now out of the picture and just holding onto the frame.
But tbf in the past we have carried players like Dugan and Moylan when they could barely catch a ball or make a pass stick. Spose we have more options these days.

Just a couple of things buzzing around my head while I try to aviod working.
I don't think anyone is basing their opinion of Trindall on yesterday alone. He has had two hit-outs this year, one trial and one not (though still not a 'round' game, given). For mine, what I was looking to see was how he compared to the other players on the field for more general things. I wasn't looking for Andrew Johns, just an indication of his development generally. How was his speed, awareness, fitness, that sort of stuff. The main issue, and one that carried over from last year, is that he doesn't look above any of the reggies guys, and looks behind the guys with some/lots first grade experience. He demonstrates a big boot (very handy) but not a great deal of nouse (very concerning). His involvement isn't that great, though he seems tough and fit enough. Basically where he was coming into first grade... and not an improvement along the lines a number of the younger Sharks guys are showing.

So what do we do with him?
You can't start him if Moylan is fit. Having that boot is great but not enough to push Mozza's TA ability out.
You could put him on the bench, but other guys probably serve the team better as a utility and he's not going to get too much action at 6/7.
You could start him in reggies and let him work on his half game. Though he's not getting experience at NRL level there.

I see why we resigned him, but i don't know where the improvement is goiong to come from. We could take a high risk punt and put him in, but there's no real evidence to back that up. If I was Fitz I couldn't put my first year on his shoulders.

In the post match interview Fitz didn't seem happy about the prospect of Trindall getting suspended.

It seemed to me like he'd been factoring Trindall into his plans.

I don’t get the Trindal utility talk he has as much utility as an Allen key building a house, his defence and running game is currently poor so you can’t have him as a defensive middle, running hooker or forward, you definitely don’t want him defending out wide so if he is on the bench it’s simply to cover a half.
I think the utility talk is just a nice way of saying he currently isn’t in our half’s talk but you keep asking about him so I’ll be nice and talk him up.

That seems a bit extreme. A good keelhauling should suffice.

This is a circular argument mate...

A bunch of us said he is good late last year.
He played bad.
He must be good though because look at how well we rated him last year.
Therefore we are right. He is good.

He was statistically the worst defender in the competition last year. He did some good things, but was out of his depth at NRL level. This doesn't mean I'm ruling out him being good this year. It just means that there were plenty on here watching him with rose-coloured glasses last season.

Defence is bad and makes poor choices a lot, especially close to the line.
Has shown some potential but so have plenty of others who have faded away into mediocrity rather than forge forwards.
Managing to be the worst on the field in a trial where 90% of players had less experience than him is a worry.

Because he is young and not Chad he can play an okay game with bad defence and still get votes. Rudolf used to get a lot of defensive leeway too but after a bit people got a bit more critical. I think Trindall may have sunk his grace period with most people after that trial effort.

I don't think anyone is basing their opinion of Trindall on yesterday alone.

No but as I said I think he has lost his grace period with most now.

I would still somewhat consider the All Stars as a trial though, he just looked a bit better with better players around him. One being Hynes.

I think for Trindall “utility” means that he is injury cover for Moylan, and on a good day he can be used for 15-20 minutes in the role he played mid-2021 as an extra ballplayer either side of half time.

If Tracey and McInnes are both in the 13 you certainly are not picking Trindall to play 9 or the back 5.

I'm still a fan, though been disappointed in the last two games (well I only saw the first half yesterday). There were still a few good things, like the cut-out pass that got dropped by Samrani, and some of his longer kicking including the kick under pressure after the poor pass. Even the failed grubber, execution was bad but idea was right.

Given he'll be suspended, I'd be going with Metcalf to partner Hynes for the start of the season, he has speed and X factor. Also as soon as Moylan makes a mistake the whole Shark Park crowd will groan, and then it will be downhill from there.

If Metcalf hadn't signed for the Warriors I'd be with you mate - but his defection has left a sour taste in my mouth. Moylan it is, however unhappy and unpalatable though that may be.

Hasn’t grabbed the bull by the horns with his 2 oops this season but I’m not writing him off just yet either.
The all stars game he was playing behind a beaten pack with players he is unfamiliar with.
Again the trial yesterday is a similar scenario. We kept making errors (him included granted) so we never really got going. He was also playing with a lot of kids so again probably a bit unfamiliar.
I still think a trial with the main squad would have been a better indicator but now with his suspension he won’t get that opp. Shame.
