Is Rugby League the only sport where a "home ground" is such a loose concept?

We've had teams where they play games split almost equally between 3 stadiums.

Does that happen in any other sport? I know there might be the odd game taken to the road (usually to a totally different city) every now and then in other sports, but I don't know if anyone else does it quite like this?

With Melbourne-based AFL teams playing out of either the MCG or Etihad you coiuld say they don't really have a home ground advantage when playing other Melbourne teams. Was different when they all had their own home grounds years ago. You also have Hawthorn and North Melbourne taking a few games per year to Launceston and Hobart respectively.

But in Melbourne they pretty much all stick to the same ground though dont they? ie SCG teams play all home games at the SCG and Etihiad teams play at Etihad?

No. Most split their games between the two grounds depending on who they're playing.

That's just it though, as HB said previously if we agree to playing 1 or 2 games there, next thing they'll want us to play 3 or 4 and then the whole season. We have to stand our ground and say no.

We will cross that bridge when we come to it.

If we can benefit financially from just moving a couple of games, then I say go for it.

There trying to hard to copy Melb and their constant 25-40k plus crowds with the 75k plus crowds for the big games , it just isn't going to happen, it is just a bizzare obsessive sports culture here, and the travel and amenities are so easily accessibly plus hawk Collingwood and Richmond have inxs of 75k members I thought I heard yesterday. Just improve all local grounds and make each a fortress would be the best advise, better atmosphere looks and sounds better on tv.. Stop trying to be something your not.

With all due respect mate you wouldn't say that if you went to games at SCG Stadium. As I've said before, playing at SFS would make life far easier for me but I'm dead against it.

Spot on mate. We will never ever be like Melbourne.

Has anyone got a timeline of government money given to our stadium?

Not trying to compare the 2 codes too much, but I need some info from an AFL tradgic.

What year did the Melbourne teams ditch their home ground?

Did crowds increase straight away? (We're they already big?)

I've lived back here since 86-87, and they were playing to mostly packed suburban ground then.

I suppose what I was trying to ask was - did they move their matches because they had outgrown their suburban grounds, or did they make the decision to try and grow their crowds?

Your answer suggests the former.

Didn't go to lots of games, but the old grounds were were primitive, but I still rekon NRL at 80% crowd capacity suburban grounds should be their focus, afl is just a different beast.

When I lived in Melbourne, the suburban grounds were starting to be dismantled.

If you have the MCG as your home ground, you're doing great. If you get Ethihad, you're being ripped off.

AFL jumped the gun a bit, now they're talking about Eddie McGuire Stadium, uprading Punt Road, or turning Carltons spiritual home into a boutique stadium.

They should have kept Waverly us a fully functioning stadium.
