Just thought I'd bring this thread back for discussion.

I know we're all a bit excited this year with our attacking potential, the likes of Maloney, Barba, Val, Bird etc have us looking for a big improvement in scoring points but as usual defence wins matches, consistently holding teams to 10-12 points will see you in the top four at the end of the season.

Have we got the defence to stop teams or are there still some glaring deficiencies?

Who do you think are our best and worst defenders?

Our left hand edge may be a go to side in the early rounds in the comp for the teams we are playing.

Out of the winger, centre & half (more than likley Maloney) we are looking like having 2 new people playing those spots. Not to forget Wade will be unsure of how Maloney reacts to certain decisions etc so the whole side will initially be a work in progress until we develop combinations & structures with all players needing to be on the same page.

Edit same with our right side, if Bird gets the nod he will have Chad on his inside (assuming Flano won't protect him or try to hide him one in from the wing), so basically our edges might look like they could leak some points early on in the season.

Maloney isn't a great defender but he always gets his body in the way and slows down defenders enough for the cover defense to complete the tackles.

He's better than toddy.

Jeez toddy could slide off a tackle, my fav is sandow he was ordinary at best once they outlawed the shoulder charge he took useless to a new level, like SB said I've watched Maloney closely since the rumours of him coming began and he has a fair dinkum dip at stopping the opposition a fair few of his missed tackles are him racing through on his own kicks while they do brush him off, he slows them down enough for the cattle to arrive and effect the tackle. I'm not stressed for the season ahead defence wise.

Ricky and Feki were a disaster together. If Beale is shifted to that side and Bird plays with Val I think that will tighten things up. The greatest concern is how easily teams seem to march down the field against us. Line speed seems to be missing. We have a good pack but seem to lack that urgency in the middle sometimes

Noticed in the trial wade pushed in further with maloney going outside him with poly next to him. Thats our biggest worry defensively this season.

Our defence will look awesome and energetic against unmotivated bottom dwelling teams but will get embarrassed against the better teams and outright decimated against the likes of Melbourne & Manly

So basically I don't think our defence overall will be any better or worse than previous recent seasons

Bumped this thread after about 6 years which coincidentally is the last time we had a good defensive structure.

When Fitz signed on we all knew our defence would improve as he was responsible for getting the Rooster’s defence rock solid in recent years.

Now I’m asking this question as someone who didn’t play the game and I know we have only had two rounds but can anyone identify what it is that Fitz does differently to those coaches we’ve had recently?

Obviously Steve Price plays a part as well.

But what are the defensive structures he’s brought in as opposed to previous coaches?

Hmm I think there is definitely more of a focus on line speed and "hitting and sticking". Cut down time, reduce momentum and create errors. Morris had the boys sliding more and they often retreated when the ball moved to the edges. Makes it hard to dominate tackles if you are retreating.

More attack in the defence. Line speed, kick pressure, intent & intensity.

Someone smarter & likes to type more can breakdown structures but try look at how they move in a group and maintain spacing.

Selects Dale Finucane in the team, and has (close to) the same lineup 2 weeks in a row.

2017, 2018 teams were very well structured defensively. 2017 lacked a bit of cohesion (and maybe ran out of puff). 2018 team was well organised after about week 6 or 7, but just didn’t have enough points in them (or enough mongrel without Wade).

Bomber years were a mess. Coach did his best with the cattle he had, but was working on other 70% of the cap of the top teams, and his highest paid players were rarely healthy.
