Daniel Riccardo might have a way back into an F1 drive this year. AlphaTauri (Red Bull sister team) are on the verge of sacking driver Nyck DeVries for underperforming. Daniel Riccardo, who is currently Red Bull’s test driver and reserve driver looks set to take the spot.

Would be interesting to see and all but Alpha Tauri is more of a junior team for younger up and coming drivers.

Riccardo raced for them back when they were called Toro Rosso but that was at the start of his career and even if he found himself in an Alpha Tauri it would only be a short term thing.

If they sacked Nyck they would likely just stick another rookie in the seat but with AT struggling so much the last few seasons and HQ not being impressed with their under performance they should give Danny a crack at bringing in some points for them and it will help keep him sharp outside the simulator work.

He might be able to help develop the car a bit as well or nut out some of the issues while being a positive influence on Yuki. Those AT's are way off where they should be.

Interestingly he has already had a seat fit out for both the Red Bull & Alpha Tauri when he joined back with them

Monaco tomorrow.

Love that track.

Would tire of it quickly if every race was on a track like that but it's great once a year.

It's the worst track on the calendar by far for racing. It's a qualifying track cause there is no over taking made even harder by how wide the modern cars are.

It remains on the schedule for historic and $$$ reasons

I'm glad it's still there though, still quite the spectacle seeing those drivers showcase their skill and courage doing insane speeds cm's from barriers and there's usually some drama. It's a more interesting event than some of the generic modern circuits so it breaks up the monotony

But yea whoever gets pole, well you have to hope they have a mechanical failure, botch a pitstop/strategy or crash out to beat them. Rain would make things interesting for sure.

When you think about it it's actually kinda remarkable in this day and age of OHS that they still let them race there though the safety tech in cars and barriers has come a long way from where it once was (thankfully)

Old school circuits is where it's at IMO - Spa, Silverstone, Suzuka ect. They arn't a guarantee of an exciting race but they are just brilliant tracks.

Would love to go to Spa but I don't see it staying on the calendar for long.

Same, having a seat around turn 3 would be brilliant seeing the cars live scream up through there. Even on fans phone camera footage it's impressive the speed and grip / change of direction through the uphill right hand turn Raidillon

The circuit has spent alot of money on infrastructure and safety upgrades lately but it seems political/financial driven as to why it might get dropped from the calendar which is ridiculous. The fans love it, the drivers love it.

But money talks

Middle East and Asia are only going to get more events in the future IMO

Done deal. He’a baaaaack.

‘Hurts like a mother*****r’: F1 world in shock over Ricciardo deal as ‘harsh’ rookie reality sinks in

The F1 world is in shock at the news Daniel Ricciardo will be returning to the grid immediately after AlphaTauri sacked rookie driver Nyck de Vries.

28-year-old de Vries waited a long time for his shot in Formula One, but has now been axed just 10 races into his career.

Red Bull will loan reserve driver Ricciardo to their sister team for the remainder of the season, offering the Australian a chance to prove himself in the competition again – despite it coming at the current last-placed team.

AlphaTauri has struggled miserably all season and sit rock bottom in the constructors’ championship, with de Vries failing to pick up a point and teammate Yuki Tsunoda managing just a pair of points.

On the latest episode of Pit Talk: McLaren gets achingly close to a double podium at the team‘s home race in Silverstone, but Aussie rookie Oscar Piastri’s fourth place is a big tick of approval in just his 10th grand prix. How high can McLaren get in the remainder of the season?

While there’s plenty of excitement at seeing the popular figure of Ricciardo back on the grid, Red Bull’s habit of mid-season sackings has again come under criticism.

Sky Sports’ F1 commentator David Croft said 10 races wasn’t enough time for de Vries to prove his abilities in the competition.

“Daniel Ricciardo on loan to Scuderia AlphaTauri for remainder of 2023 season,” Croft tweeted. “1st race will be Hungary next week.

“Can’t help think that however nice it will be to have Daniel back on the grid, Nyck wasn’t given enough time to show what he can do – 10 races!”

Fellow commentator Alex Brundle labelled it a ‘harsh’ call given the underperforming AlphaTauri AT04 has been such a difficult car to drive, adding that Red Bull’s decision also proved the franchise has little faith in their young drivers including rising star Liam Lawson.

“This is a bit harsh in several directions,” Brundle tweeted.

“A) I think it’s fair to expect a full season to prove you can perform, especially when the car has been such a moving target.

“B) Taking DR and not Lawson seems to demonstrate no confidence from RB in their driver roster.”

Lawson has been in the Red Bull Junior Team since he was 17 years old, and is currently battling for the Japanese Super Formula title.

He was viewed as the likely replacement for de Vries – and indeed may be selected in 2024 – but AlphaTauri has instead brought back 34-year-old Ricciardo, who raced for two seasons with the team in 2012-13 (then Toro Rosso) before being promoted to Red Bull.

Commentator Alex Jacques wrote: “Very pleased to see Danny Ric back on the grid but it really is another classic of the Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri second seat genre.

“De Vries sacked 10 races in.

“Lawson passed over having been with the academy since he was 17.

“New driver is 34 and left the team a decade ago.”

Former F1 driver (with Virgin in 2010) Lucas di Grassi said Red Bull’s decision-making processes were to blame.

“When you axe a driver after 10 races it shows the process of making the hiring decision is wrong,” he wrote.

“Motor Racing relies too much on instinct or “one lap” or “one race result” instead of looking the long term norm of a specific driver.

“So much methodology and data to make the car faster, so little to choose the right race driver.”

But it was another former F1 driver, Giedo van der Garde, who delivered one of the most emotional and shocked reactions.

De Vries’ fellow Dutchman van de Garde wrote: “Never expected it to be over so quickly for Nyck.

“If you look back at it, the amount of time he was given to get used to the car and the progress he made (slowly but surely) it’s – in my opinion – been too soon. As for Nyck, this hurts like a m*#%{f^]er.”

He added the de Vries, a Formula 2 and Formula E champion, has the pace to compete elsewhere with his F1 dream appearing dead in the water.

“I remember when my career ended so quickly, I couldn’t watch a single metre of racing. That’s understandable, but let’s not forget this guy is quick as hell, has proven himself in a lot of categories and has a bright future in motorsport ahead of him.

“It might be too soon to focus on that, but important to keep in mind. Cheer up and you can be proud of yourself buddy.”

Now he needs to perform cause that red bull seat is ripe for the picking

When Danny did his first test for Red Bull this year, apparently Christian Horner did not even recognise his driving, he thinks Danny had picked up a bunch of bad habits at McClaren, once he started ironing those out, his times dramatically improved. I think we’ll see a better driver, but unfortunately the car he’ll be in wont be competitive. Its just great to see him back though.

Reports from that test yesterday had him at times that would have put him on the front row
