Tim sheens as head of football. Wouldn’t mind him .

Former Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens could be Sharks’ general manager
APRIL 06, 2019
Old super coach Tim Sheens has emerged as a dark horse to join the Cronulla Sharks as general manager of football following the departure of CEO Barry Russell.

The four-time premiership-winning coach at the Canberra Raiders and Wests Tigers is currently coaching struggling English Super League club Hull KR.

Sheens, 68, mentored Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley and Ricky Stuart during his days in Canberra and already has a good relationship with rookie coach John Morris, who he signed to the Tigers in 2007.

Your columnist understands Sharks directors have been approached by an agent acting for Sheens. He has also been highly recommended by Penrith general manager Phil Gould and Canberra Raiders coach Stuart.

Interestingly, Gould’s name had been mentioned for the role.

Not that he would consider taking a pay cut from his $800,000-a-year deal at Penrith for a $300,000 gig at Cronulla.

Gould’s name emerged following a lunch on Tuesday at one of Sydney’s flashest restaurants, Black, at The Star casino.

Gould was seated on a table with EGroup security boss and long-time mate Sami Chamoun.

On another table Cronulla Sharks chairman and The Star chief operating officer Dino Mezzatesta entertained media executives Nicholas Gray and Edwina McCann.

And, about 10m away, Fox Sports boss Steve Crawley, Rabbitohs and NSW Origin hooker Damian Cook and his manager, Mario Tartak, were talking about TV opportunities.

Mezzatesta later joined Gould’s table.

Crawley — the old journo who broke the big Super League launch story back in 1990s — knows a good yarn better than most.

That night Fox Sports carried reports of Gould being sought by the Sharks. Turns out he was actually putting in a good word for Sheens.

What we need. ASAP, is a CEO who is a 'numbers person', one who can not only formulate a budget, but who also has the presence to make sure the big spenders in the boardroom stick to it.

I personally would go for a 'cleanskin', one who has no previous NRL association and in theory, no bad habits. Stuart Clarke's name was being thrown around at one stage and he would be the ideal sort of candidate with good admin qualifications and experience and a sporting background at the highest level.

I agree I would want to see someone from outside the NRL come in with business expertise to help ensure our financial stability.

We don't need a HoF - if Morris needs assistance with a particular task(s) hire someone for a much smaller some to support him in that area.

What experience does Clarke have as a CEO? Serious question, no idea what he's been up to.

Looks like he was GM there in 2011.

Needs a bit more under his belt than that, which he may well have for all I know.
