Chief Operating Officer

New South Wales Rugby League

March 2015 – Present 4 years 2 monthsSydney, Australia

The NSW Rugby League is governing body of intrastate rugby league in NSW. This includes all competitions played as a prelude to the National Rugby League Premiership. Further, the NSW Rugby League is also one half of the biggest sporting event each and every year, the State of Origin series.

In my current role I have oversight into the whole NSW Rugby League business including finance, commercial (sponsorship & marketing), football operations, n=media and communications, employment, community and risk & governance.

In addition, I am currently internal lead on the NSW Rugby League Centre of Excellence to be completed in January 2019. The COE project is currently on time and on budget and leaves a long last piece of infrastructure for the rugby league in this state.

He seems well qualified with a Law Degree and a Masters in Commerce.

Maybe he wouldn't see our CEO job as a step up the ladder. One thing in our favour is, as someone mentioned above, he's a self confessed Sharks tragic.

I'm not a fan of him, and I'm not suggesting for us, but I'm surprised Dave Smith didn't get a job in clubland.

He's has no idea about general footy, but he is a very good money man

Did he stay here though? May have wanted to go home?

I think an NRL club is a bit below him.

This is a good appointment.

I have a mate who was in a senior management position at the Star and he rates Richard Munro very highly.

Worst case he might be able to pull some strings and save us $ on away accommodation!

You would think he should be able to source some more sponsorship deals. He would have some handy connections.

Richard Munro
Chief Executive Officer

As an established industry leader, Richard is well known to key decision-makers and is an outstanding advocate for Australia’s accommodation sector. In his position of Chief Executive Officer with the Accommodation Association of Australia, Richard negotiates with all levels of Government on behalf of the accommodation sector and ensures that the Association provides a comprehensive suite of services, to ensure that the best outcomes are achieved for its members.

Richard's experience in major hotels – commencing his career as a food-and-beverage trainee and graduating to senior management – means he is in tune with the needs of the industry at all levels. Richard’s considerable experience includes his former position as Chairman of the Accommodation Division of the NSW Australian Hotels Association branch between 2007 and 2010 and General Manager of Star City Hotel & Apartments from 2001 to 2010. Richard is a former Director of Development Australia/New Zealand/Pacific with World Hotels and a former President of the Darling Harbour Business Association.

You have to be kidding me. I hope I'm wrong but this guy has a very soft background in Association management, where he hasn't had to contend with disgruntled shareholders or members. Was this position advertised, or did the Board, in it's wisdom, keep it 'in house'? I don't suppose he knew our Chairman from his time at the Star either.

As Bort said, his background may get us some good deals on accomodation.

How much would you typically factor a resume in when hiring? Sure it matters, but the person in front of you matters more.

Hopefully a decent bit... I've had some experience working with people who nailed the interview but had a weak resume and they have all been ****

IMO experience and verifiable results in particular are a baseline requirement, but the difference between an OK candidate and a great one can only be learned with face to face contact.

Unless anyone here has had that, they are flying blind.

Yep I'd agree with that.

Also happy for him to not have experience dealing with angry members/shareholders if his business skills are good enough to ensure we don't have angry members/shareholders!

The surname of the stand-in CEO made me think of that old joke: 'Why does Mike Tyson cry when he's having sex?'

Spot on MB. You are 100% right about the face to face contact.
