Tolman makes a lot of sense. He is a good defensive forward and Fitzy is very defence focused. No surprises there really. I would be inclined to rotate some of the bench forwards to give some of them game time and more minuted in NSW cup.

I think our strongest pack though would be.

You have to trot out your best line up, especially this early in the season. I don’t think you can afford to take that luxury yet.

Could be a positive. Our quality depth is getting solid games for the jets, so their match fitness will be primed once they’re called upon

Mate if we played the west tigers give Royce Hunt a run and Fifita minutes in NSW cup for match fitness. Their pack sucks.

My theory is Fifita is being picked early in the season to help build that team attitude, what Cronulla wants to be this year.

Get a few wins under the belt and that’s when I reckon you unleash the Williams and the Hunts to run rampage

Based on rounds 1 & 2 you could think that but I reckon it’s more horses for courses sprinkled with who we have available with our overall squad.
I sort of anticipated him going with the x 4 forwards on the bench to counter the raiders big men, again the same for Parra but to a lesser degree, I’m not as sold on needing the x 4 forwards for the dragons

I think he wants to see if he can get some of the old Fifita back with some match fitness and controlled minutes. Could be a master stroke.

The way Finucane is going so far it looks like there will be some definite gametime for the depth during origin time.

Nothing, which is some people's problem.
They want Royce or Pele picked ahead but he's been playing too well.
Flash bang fans. I get it, I love a barnstorming, offloading beast as much as the next bloke - **** mate I'd welcome the shoulder charge back - but Tolman has crafted a 14yr almost 300 game career outta being a workhorse. He's not gonna switch into some dynamic wreaking ball now. He will make 95% of his tackles and go all day.

really doubt that. I think Fitz is settled on Moylan/Hynes for the time being and reasonably happy how the pairing is going and won't want to interrupt potential further progress.

Trindall will be the one coming on for impact or injury cover. Who he replaces I am not sure. could be in the forwards or halves

I think it's a good sign of the form of our forwards and depth that quality players like Hunt & Williams are currently named as reserves. However prior to the pre-season games who would have thought Fifita & Tolman would be looking as sharp as they are. I think alot were considering them depth, not necessarily starting 17 material.

Though surely Williams (our best forward in 2021 IMO) won't be spending too much time there. Hunt is very damaging but isn't given that much opporutnity / minutes to stake his claim over a solid long stint workhorse like Tolman or an experienced big name forward on a comeback year like Fifita.

I feel as though Fitz is playing the percentages on this one even if it seems a strange bench or a bit light on I think we can make it work and it gives as plenty of options relatively speaking with the outs we have.
Me. Toot toot.

I said exactly this, and showed you why. Tolman is a top 17 player on this team, and with limited minutes Fifita is still a beast.

You’re welcome.

Prior to the pre season games nope but in the trials I called it for Fifita and some people had a tantrum

I don’t see the point in playing 4 fowards in today’s game with all the new concussion protocols. Better served having that utility option on the bench.

Well done burgess

I have backed Fifs for the last few years even when many a fan were saying he was done. I still saw promise in him and have felt he could still add value if he could stay fit and on the field even if he was never going to get back to being the player he was.

Regardless, Andrew has done better than even I was expecting this early in the season and I am happily and pleasantly surprised by the level of his performances. He's a genuine forward selection again, not just depth. I'm interested to see how good he can get throughout the year or if he more so just maintains this sort of level.

Tolman I really like, was prob the first to put my hand up few years back wanting to sign him but I will admit I thought he might regress, he looked wrecked back end of last season making the tackles for half a team. Very happy to see him plugging away and looking keen and energetic. He's 33, still some NRL life left in him. Seems to look after himself.

often that 4th forward just gets some cameo minutes like 10 minutes or less so it doesn't add much value if they are played that way

however I sometimes feel a utility impact player is put on late game just for the sake of it cause he's available and fresh on the bench but even when the team already out there is doing fine and doesn't seem to need it

I'm surprised by the inclusion of tricky, would have thought fitzy would have went with hunt or Williams

yea I'm not sure how he is planning to use him or who he will be replacing unless he is nervous if Mozza has a niggle or something. Maybe he will come on @ 13, Cam McG goes to hooker to give brailz a spell but brailz seems to be handling the 80 mins fine but I know pre-season fitz plan was to give him bit of a rest IIRC OR Long shot Kennedy has a niggle.... Hynes to 1, Trindall into halves who da f knows .

Cam McG into second row?

Our bench has zero cover in the second row which worries me.

good thing Nikora never lets us down...

Prior to the pre season games nope but in the trials I called it for Fifita and some people had a tantrum

Yea I was happy with how Fifs was looking during all stars and trails and more keen to have him in the 17

true but I also don't want to constantly rely on Tolman, Dale and Brailz to be the tackling machines week in week out but it comes with their positions and work ethic so prob no avoiding it

Tolmans carries of the ball in Rnd1 against Raiders were actually quite good
