I'm all for giving Murphy a go but we must all remember that NSW Cup standards are nowhere near NRL standard. He's going to have to do his stuff quicker and be ready for blokes to belt him. No one is going to give him an easy passage.

Yes, he will get tested big time.

But that is exactly what we want , to see if he is up to it.

Top halfbacks have transitioned through NSW and QLD cup before.

DCE for one

As others have said , what is there to lose........... except Robbo.

That's a bit different to the Rally one.

On the Back of those 3 mins of Murphy I'd give him my vote.

Beats Robbos 2015 highlights not sure I would even make it to 3 mins.

I know Murphy is playing a weaker defence but a lot of his backing up and following the ball looked good, scored a few just by being Johnny on the spot. So has a bit of a knack to when to back up.

If he can do what Robbo does just a bit quicker it'll be a bloody improvement. Robbo looked a set behind the pace of the whole game the other night.

Naa, leave him in NSW Cup till he rots , gets bored or gets offered something better at another club .
Love the pumps and double pumps . Robbo should watch and learn a few things
By the way Gards did a lot of passing and scoring in those clips too . Still reckon we could have created a decent half out of him .

NSW cup is such a **** comp, the defense is pathetic. Proper reserve grade really needs to come back

Having said that Murphy only needs to be able to pass one wide, kick the ball 10 metres on the fly and throw the odd dummy, all of which he is already capable of just to be level with Robson

Anything else will be an improvement and bonus. He should at least be given a few chances against a first grade defensive line to see if he can create anything

16 nrl teams?
is that really going to make that much of a difference though in terms of the quality of the grade

Not a direct shot at Gards, it's been mentioned on here numerous times that we need a proper reserve grade competition, I fail to see what can be done to strengthen the grade.

The bottom line is we are low on nrl quality players and the majority of players playing reserve grade are just not up to nrl quality, people underestimate the difference between reserve grade and nrl

I think the travelling with nrl teams and being around them more would help. Its a tough one, you need a reserve grade but i think seperating nsw/qld isnt the answer.
Also reckon 20s should be raised to 21's. Gives em an extra year to mature plus would reduce pressure on them. By 20 theyve made it or havent, or u end up with a murphy. 24 and no firsts. 21 they might be better equipped to deal with that career pressure.

Not really one right solution, but i think clubs sending a few players to other teams to play at other grounds isnt the answer

Todd Murphy is improving each game he plays for Newtown, he is quick of the mark. I would really like to see him in first grade just to say that we tried something else.

He looks like he has heaps of time. Plenty of nice touches but the defense is horrid in NSW cup.
Still a world ahead of robbo. And I liked him and Bird combining.

Correct - 16 teams playing in their NRL jerseys/colours the game before first grade each and every weekend at the NRL ground.

2010 poses a very good question, work will still need to be done to improve the quality and depth but this would be a good start. Gives reserve grade games and players exposure and has them playing just before first grade and hanging around afterwards so they know what level they need to aspire to play in the top grade

Having the first grade team catch some of the reserve grade game beforehand and chatting with players ect can only help

I might just be imagining things back from when I was a young supporter and it was a different era but I don't remember watching reserve grade back in the day and it being such a large chasm in quality that we see today, maybe there was just more talent and genuine fringe players around I dunno but I think the structure of the comp at least wasn't adding any additional hindrance

NSW cup as it stands just seems to be a dumping ground for has-beens, never will bes and talented young players who are too old for Holden cup. Holden cup could use some tweaking as well as per BWB's recommendations.

I understand reserve grade teams must be filled and the 1-17 can't all be potential first graders there will still need to be genuine reserve graders in those squads and that's fine but it's about improving the quality of those teams on the whole and the competition in which they play.

Yeah sounds good Gards, that's what the footy was about bringing the club together and playing all three grades one after the other. The reggies game can be exciting to watch leading to the main game

But that's all a reserve grade comp ever has been or ever will be really.

ha ha perhaps but it needs to be a better comp in developing our fringe players (not just the young 21 year olds guns who's talent is obvious and were always going to play firsts)
Fans should have more of a chance to see the likes of Todd Murphy ect running around before the first grade game and getting familiar with the players before they come into firsts

I don't have the silver bullet for solving the depth and quality disparity but I think exposure, motivation and credibility would be good starts in terms of the comp. I like the Newtown jets and live close to the area but the situation with the them and the Sharks right now, it shouldn't have to come to that

But the problem is more wholistic, clubs don't have enough reward or incentive to develop players when they can just get poached or they can simply recruit from the market themselves. Clubs won't want to invest heavily in NSW cup/Reserve grade until this problem is addressed as well

I must admit I do miss the days of watching the reggies run around before firsts, finishing 10 minutes before the main game.

I got to see guys like Preston Campbell running around and exciting the crowd with everyone asking who he was, what's his story, will he get into firsts, when?

The majority of fans won't drag themselves to a separate NSW cup game at a different venue and different time so we lose out overall IMO, it's a shame that the progress seems to be play NYC and then go into firsts if you are talented instead of going through NSW cup as a progressive step
