FORMER Coast junior Todd Murphy is favoured to replace Jeff Robson as Cronulla's halfback after a string of strong performances for Newtown in the New South Wales Cup.
Murphy would have fancied his chances of securing an NRL spot for 2015 when he signed with the Sharks last year following the sacking of Todd Carney due to a urination incident.
Former Bronco Ben Barba then signed a four-year-deal with the Shire club and started the season at No.7 before shifting to fullback and making way for in-form five-eight Jack Bird who has been a revelation in recent weeks.
Knocking off Robson would likely be Murphy's best chance of securing a starting spot at the Sharks with Sydney pundits backing him to do so in the coming weeks, should he hold his form.
Cronulla tipped to favour former Coast junior for halfback
And if you had a halfback blocking your path to the NRL you would want that man to be Cronulla's Jeff Robson.
The 32-year-old off-contract No.7 is experienced, yes, but cannot create plays like Murphy has been doing for his high-flying Jets.
"It is Robson, (who is ahead of me), but if they are happy with me then I will get a go," Murphy said.
"I have been going well and I just need to keep winning games in the lower grades to push for a spot in the top team.
"I will hopefully get an opportunity soon but is hard to say when that will happen, especially if the first grade boys keep winning."
The Sharks started the season poorly but have hit some form of late, winning three of the past four.
But if they hit the wall and drop some matches, you can bet coach Shane Flanagan will not hesitate to call-up the former Kawana and Caloundra junior.
"I am happy to bide my time for now, but when I get my shot, I have to be ready and I will be ready," Murphy said.
Having spent considerable time in the No.6, Murphy said he prefers playing at halfback, strengthening his case even more.
"There is not much difference between the two positions these days, but in the seven you can control the game and steer the ship around a bit more which is what I like to do," he said.
"I just have to keep doing my job and if I do that, then I will get my shot."
