todd drink ok so everyone think he shouldnt play but think of it this way has anyone of you got drunk and gone to work the next day and did you get sacked i dont think so. i say sign him as he can play half or 5/8 even fullback has a great kicking game short and long can read a game ...yes i like chad but he can not kick long when we need to in our half yes he done it in the nyc but not first grade i also beleaive that kelly didnt give our centre and wingers much ball as he tried to take the line on to much i think tod to 5/8 and have chad or ak at half with graham in the second row we have a much better attacking game and will score more points and todd is a very good goal kicker as well...if we start winning games then the crowd comes back and we start to rebuild our money worries and even get minor prems and get money for as well and i think todd can bring that to the sharks

Sharks circling Todd Carney

Cronulla Sharks circling Todd Carney

CRONULLA Sharks may be the final hope in Australian rugby league for troubled soul Todd Carney.

The Daily Telegraph understands the Sharks have shown preliminary interest in securing Todd Carney, released last week from his Sydney Roosters contract a year from completion.

It is understood Sharks coach Shane Flanagan will meet with Carney's manager, David Riolo, sometime later this week. The pair will discuss several players, including Carney's future.

Cronulla chairman Damian Irvine does harbour concerns though whether his club's fans would accept Carney, now discarded by the Roosters and Canberra Raiders for on-going alcohol issues.

The Sharks have a host of halves - Albert Kelly, John Morris, Chad Townsend, Jeff Robson and Wade Graham - but privately feel Carney would give the club an immediate injection of high quality. Asked last night whether his club would be interested in Carney, Flanagan only said: "No comment."

Flanagan and Irvine have already held internal discussions about whether the Sharks could somehow rehabilitate Carney.

Another strong option for Carney is playing with French Super League club Catalans or European rugby union.

NRL chief executive David Gallop said he would demand to meet with Carney before registering any contract for the 2010 Dally M Medal winner.

Irvine was in meetings yesterday afternoon and unavailable for comment but it appears Toyota Stadium is the only possible home left for Carney. The Daily Telegraph was yesterday told South Sydney and North Queensland were also interested in the star five-eighth - but both clubs rejected the speculation.

Souths do have a halfback vacancy after Chris Sandow signed with Parramatta.

Asked were Souths interested in Carney, chief executive Shane Richardson said: "No, definitely not.

"We haven't spoken to David Riolo and we haven't spoken to Todd Carney. And we don't intend to.

"We have (rising halfback) Adam Reynolds next year - that is where we are going. We also have John Sutton. We don't need another halfback.

"I'm not down on Todd Carney. I wish him all the best. We just aren't interested in him," Richardson said.

Cowboys coach Neil Henry was another to rule out signing Carney. "He's not on our radar at all," Henry said. "I haven't spoken to Todd or David Riolo."

One player manager was unsure whether Carney would in fact secure a club.

"Todd Carney is damaged goods," he said. "Who would want to sign him?"

I wonder how much of that is true.

The only direct comment from anyone at the Sharks was "no comment' funnily enough.

Notice only one media organisation is reporting on it too Beejay.

Seems like a Rothfield/Richie agenda if ever I've seen one. I believe both are Sharks 'fans'.

When Preston Campbell was playing fullback and wing for the Sharks I suggested on the Sharks forum that we give him a go at half.

Everyone on the site scoffed at the idea but Lang saw the light and Campbell went on to win the Dally M.

Now more than a decade later I'm ready to make my next suggestion/s.

Todd Carney to create new positions of his own, positions never before used or thought of in rugby league.

He is to join the Sharks and play:

a combination of backrow and centre - 'bentre',

a combination of backrow and half - or 'balf',

and a combination of centre and lock, otherwise known as 'cock'.

You heard it here first ...

No no no. Don't need him, don't want him. He is damaged goods, our club has had enough off field dramas in the past few years, Todd carney is bad news. Plus we have the young halves talent coming through, save the cash Flanno.

Graham needs some defensive work to be a good lock ...

I'd take Carney .. I have a theory .. he has 1 good year of behaving and having a positive influence on the scoreboard - then next year he goes off the rails ... so sign him for 1 year with a years option. No one will sign him up now without some clauses protecting them. He is a young kids and sooner rather then later he will grow up and settle down .. why not with us. I say it's worth the risk - it's not like he's going to tarnish our name really badly - it'll be all on himself. High Risk - High Reward?

Pretty much this. Give him a fair shot to grow up and see what happens.

If we sign him I reckon he could become one of our greatest ever signings. Eventually he has to grow up and surely he will by now. The Roosters gave him too many chances - we won't. First sign of trouble I'm sure Flanno and DI will cut the cord.

As for fans accepting him, we can argue about whether or not we should sign him, but if he does come to the Sharks everyone here will support him. If the club is happy to take the risk we should be happy to cheer for him.

yeah - I posted a list in the rumour thread. Riolo is the agent for T Rex and also a few Sharks players including Pomeroy, Mannah, Collis and Hotdog

End of the day, I dont believe Carney is a bad guy, in many interviews he seems quite friendly and humble, ofcourse I have never seen him on the drink, but remember he has never had any real role models in that roosters side. Jake Friend and Nate Myles would have been a terrible influence, now I cant think of a better role model to have than Paul Gallen, one wouldn't dare to make a mistake on the weekend knowing you have Gal to face on monday morning.

Carney is a grown man, so there isnt much room to say "give the kid another chance", or "he is young and will learn" But maybe he has been lacking serious guidance for some time.

If the club decides to sign Todd, I will be more than happy, what have we got to lose?

I feel if he does something wrong everyone will be putting Carney on the chopping block, rather than the club.

Also, you have to think, IF Carney was here, and we have a combo of Carney/Townsend/Kelly, it could play a huge role in influencing a couple of gun backs wanting to come to the club in the future. I believe the moment Fergo decided he was leaving the club was when he was being fed the ball from a 6Porter 7Smith combo.

Who knows just how much Matty Wright could shine if he was on the end of Carney's long precise kicks.
