Especially in the case of the storm
A lot of their T and T guys presumably play Cup in QLD so what is going on here? They don't train most of the week (except independently) and don't get paid and then get flown to QLD to play in a fairly high level comp on behalf of the team not paying them?

I think what @stormshark was saying is that they train, but not every day and this lets the Storm pay them each a lesser amount. Not zero.

You'd hope it's not pro rata, only needed for two sessions you lose 1/3 of your money... well call it a quarter as you are still playing.

On a short turnaround week if there was only one full training session and you weren't needed you lose half your money.

If it's not pro-rata it may scale a bit more in players favour, but still, 1000 a week to be part of your squad with no real security. If you don't want them at a session you should just wear that surely.

Putting a bloke on a 1000 a week pre season train and trial and then telling him is isn't needed at all preseason trainings and not paying him what he is due also seems problematic

Oh for sure.

What I mean is… if they are doing $1k T&T for full pre-season, maybe other guys are getting signed for $600 per week or whatever. Not that they are signing guys for $1k and then tell them they missed a session so too bad.

NRLPA probably mandates the $1k for anyone who does X amount of sessions, so teams have guys outside of that system. It saves them some money and also doesn’t count as a full NRL pre-season a few years down the track when they want extra weeks off.

I could see why a team would look at a young 17/18yo kid on a junior contract and say “yeah - he can do some of the pre-season but we don’t think he is ready for the full workload of an pro player. He gets a pre-season T&T, but not the full $1k.

Just speculating though

I'd have thought some of Fearnley, Pickering, Uele may have started preseason with Sharks as there are usually some hangers on especially early.
Could still be doing a bit of both, who knows who is doing what at Sharks preseason!
