Frustrated Smith fears Chooks will be fair game for all
Jamie Pandaram
August 14, 2010

ROOSTERS coach Brian Smith fears his side has been exposed before the finals series after their inept performance against Cronulla.

''We are vulnerable, that is where we are at right now,'' Smith said following the 18-12 defeat, their second in as many weeks after five successive wins. ''We need to regroup fast.''

Smith was frustrated with the impatient nature of his team's play, a factor that cost them victory last weekend against the Dragons.

His side was penetrated through the middle of the park, with off-loads in the tackle by Sharks attackers causing chaos. In attack, Smith bemoaned their attitude.

''I thought we looked like a team that were not confident in the amount of energy we had to expend in the game, we were trying to get it all done at once, without spending all the energy and doing all the detail,'' he said.

''We had more than enough chances to score tries in the first half and put ourselves in a reasonably comfortable position but we fluffed those opportunities. Most of the time it was because we were in a hurry.''

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan enjoyed his first victory in charge of the side and said his team had preyed on the predictability of the Roosters' attack, forecasting that other sides would follow his plan.

''The Roosters have been pretty structured in the last couple of weeks,'' Flanagan said. ''Where we are on the ladder, it's going to be how the Roosters played, but it's how you allow them to play. Our defence was good.

''They ran some regular plays … we didn't take any dummies from their No.6 or No.7.''

Roosters captain Braith Anasta was left bloodied and on report following a bizarre incident in which he was pushed from behind by teammate Anthony Minichiello onto Cronulla fullback Nathan Gardner, who was mid-air fielding a bomb and was nearly flipped on his head. The 74th-minute incident highlighted the blundering nature of the Roosters' performance.

Anasta was cut above the eye after colliding with Gardner's knee and had to be bandaged before referee Matt Cecchin placed him on report for dangerous contact on a player who was in the air.

Gardner, the best player on the field, was able to continue. The Roosters had been desperate to hit back and launched a midfield bomb, but as Anasta chased it Minichiello raced up behind him and accidentally bumped his skipper into Gardner.

Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce took partial responsibility for their ''lack of composure'' in the game.

''We probably tried to do too much, that comes back to myself, we've got to get that balance right - taking our chances and being composed about it,'' Pearce said. ''We blew about five tries.''

The Sharks would give other top-eight sides problems, Gardner said. ''We proved that tonight, we've got the Gold Coast and Penrith later on, so hopefully we can spoil a few of their plans too.''

In a niggling contest, Roosters prop Jason Ryles again tested the patience of officials when he mouthed off after a penalty midway through the second half. Smith was annoyed by the referee's ruling of the tackle, saying Paul Gallen stepped off the mark sideways to create an opening for his dummy-half, and Ryles had been wrongly penalised for tackling him.

Key Roosters back-rower Frank Paul Nu'uausala would be unlucky to be suspended after being placed on report for a high tackle on Gardner early in the match.

Smith has a long week ahead. ''We've got a Monday night game coming up, that gives us a long turnaround. We'll need to use every day, that's for sure,'' he said.

Losing so often really does make those wins that much sweeter... and the 20s getting up as well in a similar fashion. Great night to be a sharks supporter!

NRL Sharks Stun Roosters

NRL Sharks Stun Roosters

The Cronulla Sharks caused arguably the biggest upset of the NRL season with a stirring 18-12 victory over the third-placed Sydney Roosters in their Round 22 clash at Toyota Stadium on Friday night.

The victory was coach Shane Flanagan's first in his fourth game since taking over from Ricky Stuart.

Not only did the Sharks, playing with great pride, beat the serious title contenders for the second time this season, they kept the Roosters scoreless for all but a three-minute burst just before half-time.

Outstanding defence by the Sharks, and one piece of self destruction by the Roosters, kept the visitors at bay until centre Ben Pomeroy's timely interception gave the home side a shock 6-0 advantage.

But when the Roosters roared back with two converted tries leading up to the interval the situation was looking ominously similar to that against the New Zealand Warriors a week earlier – when the Sharks crashed from a another 6-12 deficit to lose 10-37.

However, the Roosters eventually cracked under the constant pressure imposed by the Sharks, both in their tenacious tackling and their midfield attacks.

A Dean Collis try enabled the Sharks to draw level after 55 minutes and courageous full-back Nathan Gardner grabbed the match-winner 12 minutes before the end.

It was typical of Cronulla's enthusiastic all-round effort that few individual players stood out. As ever, there was Paul Gallen's remarkable work-rate and Trent Barrett's organisational skills.

But Gardner topped even their efforts, recovering from a battering under the towering Roosters kicks to inject thrust into the Sharks' offensive play. His reward was the deciding try.

Flanagan tweaked his starting line-up by promoting Taulima Tautai into the second-row and handing Grant Millington an interchange role, while the Roosters debuted centre Jonathan Ford in place of Mitch Aubusson.

Although scoreless, the opening quarter was notable for the number of Roosters attacks which were repulsed by a gritty Sharks defence.

Anthony Minichiello could not handle cleanly when under pressure chasing a kick to the Sharks' in-goal area; a rushed pass from Todd Carney to Sam Perrett went astray with the try-line beckoning; and Gardner climbed high against Braith Anasta to negate a Carney bomb.

But nor could the Sharks capitalise on their fewer attacking chances, centre Collis going closest with a sidestepping run. In the meantime, Roosters forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala was put on report for a high tackle on Gradner.

As the half advanced Carney kicked two 40-20s and the Roosters forced two goal-line drop-outs. But the visitors blew a certain try when winger Phil Graham dropped the ball with the try-line beckoning. A Luke Covell intercept snuffed out yet another threatening Roosters assault.

It was to be another Sharks interception, by Pomeroy, which produced the first points in the 34th minute. Pomeroy knocked a Mitchell Pearce pass into the air, juggled twice before gathering and galloped 45 metres to touch down. Covell, making his 150th first grade appearance, goaled from the sideline.

Incredibly, the Roosters were in front by half-time, and all too easily. A forward pass turned over possession and in the next set Anasta stepped into a tackle and stretched out to score. Carney's conversion made it 6-6.

From the kick-off, the Roosters surged down their left flank before Graham turned back infield. Minichiello added impetus from full-back and the ball was rapidly relayed to the right for Shaun Kenny-Dowell to cross. Carney goaled to leave the dazed Sharks down by 6-12 at the break.

The Sharks were reprieved by video referee Paul Simpkins after Perrett dived under their crossbar in the 47th minute. Simpkins spotted a knock-on by Pearce earlier in the movement.

To their credit, the Sharks then launched their most convincing attacks of the game. The Roosters defence held for a time, until Tim Smith's deft pass put Collis into a gap just out from the try-line after 54 minutes. Covell levelled the totals at 12-12.

But the Sharks also had a 'try' ruled out by video referee Simpkins with 17 minutes remaining. Blake Ferguson touched the ball forward when leaping for a Barrett cross-field kick which eventually ended up in the hands of Collis.

Two minutes later Simpkins correctly ruled a double movement against Carney when the Roosters five-eighth evaded one tackle and then slithered out of another by John Morris to reach the try-line.

It was end-to-end stuff, and the Sharks were almost immediately rewarded with a try to Gardner. Barrett wrong-footed the Roosters defence, Anthony Tupou ranged yup in support and Gardner ducked and dived away from two tackles to give Covell an easy conversion. That made it 18-12 with 11 minutes left.

Anasta was put on report after crashing into a leaping Gardner under a towering kick. The Sharks surged back downfield and earned a scrum close to the Roosters try-line. But prop Luke Douglas had the ball knocked from his grasp by Minichiello when diving to score.

The Roosters got the ball back from a short drop-out, received a second set from a penalty, and the Sharks were again outstanding in goal-line defence to keep the rampant Roosters at bay. It was tense stuff and the Cronulla players deserved the great reception they received from their ecstatic fans.

Sharks 18
Tries: Gardner, Pomeroy, Collis
Goals: Covell 3

Roosters 12
Tries: Kenny-Dowell, Anasta
Goals: Carney 2

Am i the only one who gets very annoyed with Barrett?
I hate how he just dummies and tries to step inside every bloody time! He doesn't even look like his going to pass the ball. No wonder our outside backs don't get much ball.
The few games before origin, barrett was passing the ball and put lots of people through holes. When he did dummy and run, it surprised the defence. Now every time he gets the ball, the defence knows his gna step inside and run.

Couldn't believe he hogged the ball when someone had a very fast play the ball when we were attacking the roosters try line. Toops and Gal were outside him running very hard at holes. He didn't even look outside him... He just stepped back inside to where all the roosters defense were. Very stupid in my opinion!

In saying that.. AWESOME WIN over the roosters =]
My best mate is a roosters supporter and i'm so happy we did the double over them this year!
Love Gardner's courage! We need to put on more plays to get him into space and get him running into holes.
Gallens 2nd half was massive. His a BEAST!

Only problem is that the Roosters really pounded Gardner with some illegal stuff to take him out of the game.

Gals was the one who really copped it! A couple of those boys were all over him, especially the big polys Masoe & #18 (and I think FPN too) were all really giving it to him. Masoe (I think) lead with the legs going into the tackle where Snowy was stripped on the line and mini knocked it dead.

What's the procedure there? The Ref never asked the Video ref to look at it, so the Video Ref isn't allowed to make a call on it?

Also, if the Ref notices something like that in the replay, can they make a call on it?

Daniel Conn also elbowed Gardner in the back of the head after the last try. 50/50 call for an 8 point try in my book.

Surprise Shark attack stuns Roosters

LOWLY Cronulla inflicted a Friday the 13th nightmare on the high-flying Sydney Roosters.

Cronulla Sharks beat Sydney Roosters in NRL round 23

* CRONULLA 18 SYDNEY ROOSTERS 12

SHANE Flanagan knew it could have been a bad thing. That it could have ruined him before he was even supposed to start.

"It did cross my mind when I took over," Flanagan said.

"I was preparing for next year but when Ricky left early I had to get in there a bit sooner than expected.

"I am not sure if it was a poisoned chalice but I was thinking about what could happen. All the people at the club told me not to worry about this year and that I wouldn't be judged on the end of the year, but I was thinking about what could happen if I didn't win again."

That's why Flanagan led the charge last night when the Sharks broke into a rare and loud victory song after shocking the Roosters in the year's biggest upset.

Given no hope of beating the high-flying Roosters and with nothing but pride to play for, the Sharks gave Flanagan his first win with a performance befitting a team that was headed towards the premiership.

And the small but vocal crowd cheered them off like they were premiers after Nathan Gardner scored in the 68th minute and his teammates tackled their hearts out for the next 12.

"It was great to finally sing that song," Flanagan said.

"There were a lot of people in there that I hadn't seen before and they all had smiles on their faces. It was a great night for the club."

In a rare insight into the pressure cooker of the coaching world, Flanagan admitted he was feeling the heat despite being given assurances by the Cronulla board that he would not be judged on season 2010 after taking over a rugby league basket case with just eight weeks to go.

"Hopefully it takes some pressure off me," Flanagan said.

"I didn't want to go into next year without a win. I have been thinking about it and it is good to get the monkey of my back."

The Sharks last night were a team full of heart and self-belief.

After stunning the Roosters with the first try of the night when Ben Pomeroy snatched an intercept and sprinted 50m to score, they knew they could topple the competition's hottest team.

"I said on the record that we could win earlier in the week and I guess some people must have thought I was crazy," said prop Kade Snowden.

"But I knew we could win and so did the rest of the boys.

"We have a lot of self-believe in this club and even at halftime when we were a bit down we knew that we could get them."

The news may get worse for the Roosters with both Braith Anasta and Frank Paul Nuuausala both on report. On a poor night for the club after last week's draining Dragons encounter, they were out-enthused and out of energy.

For the Sharks, Paul Gallen was typically brilliant and Tim Smith brave to play with his newborn son unwell in hospital, but last night belonged to Flanagan.

"We were desperate to win for him," Snowden said. "We wanted to show him that we want him as our coach. He doesn't deserve to coach a side that doesn't win."

And for Flanagan, the pressure is off - for now.

CRONULLA 18 (D Collis N Gardner B Pomeroy tries; L Covell 3 goals) bt SYDNEY ROOSTERS 12 (B Anasta S Kenny-Dowall tries; T Carney 2 goals) at Toyota Stadium. Referee: Matt Cecchin, Tony De Las Heras. Crowd: 8,911.

I could be wrong Buz, but, I thought the NRL judiciary will review the game and if they spot something, they can act retrospectively. Again I am not too sure

League: Sharks on right track

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan hopes his side's gritty win over the finals-bound Roosters is the first step towards rebuilding the club's respect in the NRL.

The Sharks looked headed for the seventh straight defeat when they trailed 12-6 at half-time before they grabbed two second-half tries to clinch the match and hand Flanagan his first win as a top grade coach.

It was a victory built on that back of a colossal defensive effort, particularly in the first half, when the visitors enjoyed a massive amount of possession but squandered a number of great scoring chances.

The Roosters had an off-night and were a shadow of the side that surged up the table by winning five games in a row last month but Flanagan said his side deserved all the credit.

"Because of where we are on the competition table we're always going to get that the Roosters didn't play well," he said.

"But it's how you allow them to play."

"Our defence was very good; they didn't make too many line breaks."

"Those three minutes before half-time was the only time they put some points on."

"It's how we defended against them, that's what pleased me, we didn't attack great but we defended great."

"We played well and we deserved what we got tonight.....hopefully we can build on that now."

While they are no hope of playing in the finals, the Sharks still had plenty of motivation to win with retiring winger Luke Covell playing his 150th match while half Tim Smith only confirmed he'd play a little over an hour before kick-off.

Smith spent most of the last couple of days leading up to the match at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where his new-born son had been battling breathing problems.

But with little Slayter Aiden Smith given the all clear on Friday afternoon, the 25-year-old decided to play and played an important role, setting up Dean Collis' try in the second half that brought the scores level.

"He (Smith) had a big 24 hours and I wasn't sure whether should play but he toughed it out," Flanagan said.

"He didn't have much sleep last night but the baby's doing good."

"It's great that we could win, especially with the preparation Timmy had."

Asked how he felt about picking up his first win as an NRL coach, a relieved Flanagan said: "It was tense right until the end....I just kept thinking they were going to take it away from us."

"It would have been heartbreaking. But we hung in there, that's the determination of this playing group."

The Roosters were easily the better side in the first 40 minutes but simply failed to take their try-scoring chances when they were on offer.

The defeat leaves the Tricolours' top four hopes in jeopardy, with a clutch of teams closing in with a logjam on the NRL ladder from second down to eighth spot.

Coach Brian Smith said his players simply lacked the composure to come away with the victory.

"We looked like a team that wasn’t confident on the amount of energy we had to expend in the game," he said.

"We were trying to get it all done at once instead of doing all the little details," he said.

"We had more than enough chances to score tries in first half to put ourselves in reasonably comfortable position but we fluffed those opportunities."

"Most of the time it was because we were in a hurry."

"We were just beaten by a team that had more energy and were prepared to do all the hard stuff."

The Roosters have concerns over a couple of key players with skipper Braith Anasta and forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala both placed on report for dangerous tackles on Sharks fullback Nathan Gardner a hurry."

"We were just beaten by a team that had more energy and were prepared to do all the hard stuff."

That was a good tough effort by the boys last night, very committed. Really the roosters scored all their points in 5 minutes so defensively we were pretty good last night. Our attack was OK but im just glad we toughed out a win. Bring on the CHEATS.
