That was the best Friday Night Footy game I've seen in 10 years! Got to love Fittler's and Johns' commentary (when you win).

Showed nearly the whole Up Up Cronulla after the game, Gards being interviewed with the crowd singing in the background, a 70-year old lady giving Fittler the finger... awesome :drunk

Sharks sink Roosters in the Shire - Sydney Roosters

Sharks sink Roosters in the Shire
13/08/2010 11:00:00 PM

The Sydney Roosters have suffered a shock 18-12 defeat to the lowly Cronulla Sharks at Toyota Stadium on Friday night.

Friday the 13th and the result from round 13 came back to haunt the Tricolours as they were left to rue countless missed opportunities to slump to back-to-back defeats for the first time since round 10.

The four day turnaround may have curled the Roosters initially but it was their finishing that ultimately cost them the two points so dearly needed to secure a spot in the top eight.

That spot has been put in jeopardy with the loss potentially seeing them drop to eighth at the end of the round if results go against them.

Anthony Minichiello had the bounce of the ball go against him as a chance to score career try 100 slipped between his fingers after a Todd Carney grubber kick got away from him during the early stages.

Frank-Paul Nuuausala was then put on report for a high shot on Nathan Gardener inside 10 minutes with his careless effort on the end of an enthusiastic kick chase.

The game continued to get physical as both sides warmed to the task, Carney again creating half chances for the visitors, first with a pass that was just a little too far in front of Sam Perrett and then with a well placed bomb, which was too tough to gather in by Braith Anasta.

The Roosters continued to dominate field position, Craney’s huge 40/20 helping their cause further but poor execution failed to reap reward.

That theme continued when Phil Graham bombed a four pointer with the try line at his mercy after a well worked set play presented him with an open massage to the line.

Ben Pomeroy didn’t have the same issue when he intercepted and raced 50 meters to open the scoring in the 34th minute. Mitchell Pearce threw a flat pass to his right and the lurking centre was on hand to pounce and hand his side an unlikely lead. Luke Covell added the extras for a 6-nil lead.

The Roosters captain then restored parity on the scoreboard in the 37th minute when he wrong footed the defence to power over the stripe. Carney, Pearce and then Anasta linked up to get the visitors back in the game after several near misses had them playing from behind. Carney levelled the scores with his successful conversion attempt.

Moments later the Tricolors had the lead when Shaun Kenny-Dowall finished a wonderfully well worked team try. Starting from the centre the ball was swung to the left before going through the hands and ending up in the centres hands down the right edge before he strolled over untouched. Carney kicked true, in the process becoming the first player past 200 points this season, to give the Roosters a 12-6 half time lead.

Perrett appeared to open the scoring in the second half but video referee Paul Simpkins was asked for his opinion and ruled in favour of no try, finding a knock on from Pearce in the build up.

There was nothing wrong with the home side’s next effort when Dean Collis crossed with 24 minutes to play to reduce the margin to two points. Tim Smith fired a bullet pass to the centre who ran a great line to beat the goal line defence. Covell raised the flags to tie the score at 12-all.

Collis was denied a try shortly after when Blake Ferguson’s challenge for a bomb with Graham saw him knock it on.

Carney then had claims for a four pointer but the video ref said no try as another close call went in favour of the home side, a double movement the reason behind the controversial decision.

The Sharks fullback then circled to land the killer blow with his 68th minute try under the posts putting the icing on a surprise win. Former Roosters Anthony Tupou turned the ball back on the inside to the fullback who ensured his side would not suffer their sixth consecutive loss at home.

Anasta was placed on report late in the match after accidently colliding with Gardner in the air when putting pressure on from a kick chase.

Jonathan Ford made his NRL debut is the loss after getting a late call-up to the starting side, replacing the injured Mitchell Aubusson in the centres.

Brutal Dragons encounter comes back to haunt a lacklustre Roosters outfit

WILL the real Roosters stand up? Brilliant against Parramatta a fortnight ago, brutal in defeat against the Dragons last week, but they were the lower side of ordinary last night. Of course, playing Cronulla after St George Illawarra must feel like dating Cinderella one week and one of the ugly stepsisters the next, but there will be some flutters over the Roosters' premiership credentials after the Sharks beat them last night.

It will be cold consolation - and it was cold - for Cronulla, but if the Roosters do recover from this setback to win the title, the Sharks will have beaten them twice. As it was in round 13, fullback Nathan Gardner provided the killer punch; back then he scored perhaps the best individual try of the season. Last night he didn't have to go as far, but it was just as important - a first win for new coach Shane Flanagan and a huge blow against an old foe.

After winning five straight, the Roosters have now dropped two.

The Bondi Junction boys showed much fight in their loss to the Dragons, but they were off their game for much of last night. A 21st-minute 40-20 by five-eighth Todd Carney gave them some rare time in the Cronulla quarter but they couldn't turn territory into tries. Winger Phil Graham spilled the ball over the line, juggling a Mitchell Pearce ball, after 27 minutes in their best scoring chance of the opening half-hour.

Carney was in some form with the boot - he kicked his second 40-20 after just 29 minutes - but the Roosters were struggling to click once inside their opponents' quarter. A Shaun Kenny-Dowall basketball pass went straight to a Shark. The first try of the night went to Cronulla centre Ben Pomeroy, who took an intercept from Pearce and scored. Pomeroy looked to be travelling in slow motion but his legs carried him the required distance - just.

The try must have flicked a switch in the Roosters because they suddenly clicked themselves almost immediately. First, lock Braith Anasta stretched to score.

Just two minutes later, the Roosters produced the sort of support play that had been the feature of their win over Parramatta, the match that had catapulted them into premiership reckoning. Anasta's cut-out ball put Graham into space, and he found his fullback, Anthony Minichiello, who then fed Pearce. The halfback then sent a long ball to B.J. Leilua, who put Kenny-Dowall over. The wait for the real Roosters to stand up had been rather long, but it was worth it in that one superb exchange.

While that was a diamond, much of the rest of the Roosters' performance was more dust. The Sharks levelled the scores after 55 minutes, through Dean Collis, and the centre almost gave them the lead just after the hour, only for video referee Paul Simpkins to rule against winger Blake Ferguson.

But then after 68 minutes, Gardner clambered over. The Sharks fought like they have never fought before … well at least like they have not fought this season, as the Roosters were denied in the final stages.

It has been a tough season for Cronulla, and a rare Friday-night clash was too much for many. Most clearly decided to watch from the comfort of the lounge room.

Will the Roosters be joining them in front of the box on grand final day? Difficult to say, but last night won't be enjoyable viewing.

Cronulla 18 (D Collis, N Gardner, B Pomeroy tries; L Covell 3 goals) bt Sydney Roosters 12 (B Anasta, S Kenny-Dowall tries; T Carney 2 goals) at Toyota Stadium.

Referees: M Cecchin, T De Las Heras. Crowd: 8911
