If you get the chance to see the Post Match interview with Flanno I suggest you watch it, He mentions that Gardner will be a shark FOR LIVE and that it is exciting to see a great fullback back in sharks colours(last one he was refering to was peachey). Also if you have foxtel you can watch the main snippets of it on channel 513.

Also how good is it that we THE SHARKS get PRIORITY over the broncos and eels game on foxsports news.

SHARK FOR LIFE =] hahas couldn't help myself
But yeah thats very exciting to hear from the coach.
I'm sure it will further boost Gardner's confidence and hopefully he can continue developing into a fine player. Love his courage for a little guy.

Off topic, but wow at the awesome young talent the NRL has got coming through at fullback.

I think Dugan, Coote, Gardner and Hoffman will all be world Class and rep players. Add these guys to the already established fullbacks like Slater, Hayne, Gidley and Stewart!

You are exactly right about the fullbacks... its a shame we dont have the same calibre of halfbacks coming through

Well, I was watching the game in glimpses at the pub last night, and was the only Sharky supporter there it seemed. Every time I went back to chance a look at the TV I couldn't believe that the score was so tight. Let out a drunken triumphant yell of "UP THE SHARKIES!" to a much bewildered crowd.

Got to watch the game in full today, and I was deeply impressed with our desperation in defence, particularly on the tryline. Also thought Cordoba played his best game yet.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it... but Paul Gallen's cover tackle on Sean Kenny Dowell in the last minute... if that was a grand final, it would be replayed for years!

I think Flanno is fitting into the hot seat well. I think he will be great for us.

How good is Gards? As for Conn why didn't some one jump on him after he hit Gards in the back of the head? Nothing has been said about it, at all. If it was Gal who did that he would have been sent off!

See ya bye Roosters, that is 2 from 2 this year.

from what i saw millo had a pretty solid game ( nothing too flash but safe) yet again, was so happy when he dived on that loose ball in the last minute or 2. If we don't re-sign him i think we will be kicking ourselves in years to come as i can see great things coming from this bloke in the future, play him off the bench if you have too just sign him up :cheers

Mitchell Pearce says the Sydney Roosters have two weeks to prove they are worthy NRL finals contenders
By DAVID RICCIO
August 15, 2010 12:01AM

NSW Origin halfback Mitchell Pearce has conceded the next fortnight will determine if the Roosters are grand final material.

Promoted into second favourites for the premiership on the back of a pummelling of Parramatta three weeks ago, the Roosters have since had back-to-back losses, to St George Illawarra and Cronulla.

And after eyeing a shot at the minor premiership, they're now a chance of slipping out of the top four by tomorrow night.

They are now in the midst of a 10-day turnaround to regroup and remedy their drop in form with a crunch match against Gold Coast Titans tomorrow week.

They then face finals contenders Manly and lowly-ranked Cowboys in the final two games of the season.

According to Pearce, it's the next two weeks that will illustrate if the Roosters are the real deal.

"It would've been nice to win [against Cronulla], but we've got the Titans next Monday night so it's a bit of a long turnaround after the short week so they're going to be tough as well," Pearce said.

"Every team is going to be tough going into the finals, but I think it's a matter of how good we want to be - or how good we are, to show that in the next couple of weeks."

The Roosters failed to score a single point in the final 40 minutes on Friday night against the languid Sharks, with furious Tricolours coach Brian Smith admitting his players failed to show composure in attack.

Star five-eighth Todd Carney refused to look for excuses and instead warned their rivals that they would continue with the dazzling attack that has lifted them from the cellar to the penthouse this season.

"We've got a few little things to work on, but we won't toss all that out the window just because we've had two losses," he said.

"We'll stick to what we're doing best and that was what we've been doing the last few weeks."

SHARKS MOVE ON FROM CHOOKIES TO BOOKIES

THEY might have missed the race to the finals, but Cronulla players didn't miss the final race at Rosehill yesterday. It was a double celebration for the Sharks, who toasted Paul Gallen's 29th birthday following a rare win, against the Roosters on Friday night. The majority of the first-grade squad - Trent Barrett, John Morris, Blake Ferguson and Anthony Tupou included - donned a bag-of-fruit to help ''Gal'' mark the occasion. Bets, beers and bubbly were the order of the day for many of the boys, who were on hand for the feature event, the Run to the Rose.

Just watched the game again too actually. Loved it. I saw my old man this morning and he was chanting "Gallllls!!! Galllllls!!!!!!" hahaha life is good as a Sharks fan at the moment. What a great win.

Oh yeah, and how good was our bloody defence!!! Keeping the chooks to 12 was fantastic. Loving it. Listening to Up Up Cronulla.

I agree, it was the best...Also, it's even better as my husband is an Eels supporter and its our 20th anniversary today!!!

Go Sharkies!!!

Congrats Mrs Boomboomboom!

CRONULLA players have credited a fear of letting down retiring stalwarts Trent Barrett and Luke Covell for their upset win against the Roosters. Only days before the match, the matter was discussed at length during a private meeting. "To be honest we don't think it's fair for either of the boys to go out on the end of the season we've had," prop Luke Douglas conceded. "It's been tough and they deserve a lot better. I mean, they've both played Test footy and shouldn't have to go out on a string of losses. So we've spoken about sending them out the right way."

NRL Talking Points: round 23

Crowless Roosters, a code-switching Coops and an Eel on the edge highlight this week's NRL Talking Points as the race for the finals heats up. Have your say now.

Six key Talking Points discussed from round 23 of the NRL premiership
By Sean Miller
August 16, 2010

Crowless Roosters:

It was only a fortnight ago that the Roosters were the flavour of the NRL month. Back-to-back losses and the Chooks appear to have created more questions than answers. A spirited loss to St George Illawarra is forgivable, but a loss to the down-and-out Cronulla is almost inexcusable. A short turn-around against a team that beat you by 24 points back in round 13 is obviously no walk in the park, but the Roosters had far too much at stake to let a game like Friday night slip through their fingers. Has the Roosters’ momentous bubble burst? We will find out next Monday night against the red-hot Gold Coast Titans.

Is the hype surrounding the Roosters warranted? Are they the real deal?

You had your say.

LATEST COMMENTS FROM FANS:

Ray L says: "What i hated the most was everyone saying the Roosters were bad and the Sharks didnt get much credit for out playing the Roosters. For once the Sharks had some calls go there way. the Roosters were out played, get over it. The Shakrs arent a bad side, just that they dont get ny luck to get themsleves a win. Much deserved, Go You Sharkies."

Jayvee from the Bush says: "They are as good a show as anyone else. They have quality players in the right positions and good tough forwards. They along with the Titans and Manly probably tick all the boxes, but with Fein coming into the Dragons side, I still think they will take some beating!"

Tommy Rooster says: It was an inexcusable loss however it was a short turnaround from a massive game, on top of injuries. The Roosters won every stat except the scoreboard. They made more metres, they missed less tackles, they made six line-breaks to two. It was just one of those days. Phil Graham drops the ball over an open line and then the Sharks score an intercept try -- 12 point turnaround. Credit where credit is due, the Sharks defence was very good on the night. I was at Shark Park and it started with the under 20s game. Roosters were equal first and the Sharks 13th. They rolled us and you just knew it was going to happen in first grade as well. Jeez you have to love the Shire girls though…some crackers out there on a cold night :) And yes, the game next week against the Titans will show exactly where the Roosters stand against a team that just keeps winning but no one seems to really rate.

Pete from Crookwell says: It's the Roosters, the team everyone except a small handful of strange people from Bondi love to hate. Hype is never warranted for them and no one will care if they aren't the real deal. I along with a lot of other people hope they won't win another game this season.

Tom P says: What bubble? The past two weeks have been representative of their season. Cold! Warm! Gus Fools "flavour of the month"! Cold! Cold! Warm! Other than the Ch9 commentary team, they have been a nothing team to anyone who has watched them, in an unbiased view.

Ross says: I think Mitchell Aubusson is the key here. He hasn't played for the last two weeks and the mighty chooks have missed his straight runs in attack. Also this year has shown that no team can keep on winning. Roosters will bounce back against an improving Gold Coast.

They didn't really play any better than they did against the Raiders and Tigers. They just were luckier with ref calls this time IMO.

I think we have been solid in the last 3/4 games, and we should have won the Tigers one for sure. To the point where I actually consider it a win in my own head.

Drag Queen territory.
Just got back from a two day surf trip after the game - didn't have internet all weekend.

But what a game.

As MB said, it's not like we stepped it up to a new level - but man our defense was good. It also happened to be the first time I've ever been at a Sharks win, and that too a home game - singing Up Up Cronulla at the end almost made me cry. It was that special.

Now let's repeat for the next three weeks. We BELIEVE.

Flanagan: Sharks On Right Track

Flanagan: Sharks On Right Track
Sportal

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan hopes his side's gritty win over the finals-bound Roosters is the first step towards rebuilding the club's respect in the NRL.

The Sharks looked headed for the seventh straight defeat when they trailed 12-6 at half-time before they grabbed two second-half tries to clinch the match and hand Flanagan his first win as a top grade coach.

It was a victory built on that back of a colossal defensive effort, particularly in the first half, when the visitors enjoyed a massive amount of possession but squandered a number of great scoring chances.

The Roosters had an off-night and were a shadow of the side that surged up the table by winning five games in a row last month but Flanagan said his side deserved all the credit.

"Because of where we are on the competition table we're always going to get that the Roosters didn't play well," he said.

"But it's how you allow them to play."

"Our defence was very good; they didn't make too many line breaks."

"Those three minutes before half-time was the only time they put some points on."

"It's how we defended against them, that's what pleased me, we didn't attack great but we defended great."

"We played well and we deserved what we got tonight.....hopefully we can build on that now."

While they are no hope of playing in the finals, the Sharks still had plenty of motivation to win with retiring winger Luke Covell playing his 150th match while half Tim Smith only confirmed he'd play a little over an hour before kick-off.

Smith spent most of the last couple of days leading up to the match at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where his new-born son had been battling breathing problems.

But with little Slayter Aiden Smith given the all clear on Friday afternoon, the 25-year-old decided to play and played an important role, setting up Dean Collis' try in the second half that brought the scores level.

"He (Smith) had a big 24 hours and I wasn't sure whether should play but he toughed it out," Flanagan said.

"He didn't have much sleep last night but the baby's doing good."

"It's great that we could win, especially with the preparation Timmy had."

Asked how he felt about picking up his first win as an NRL coach, a relieved Flanagan said: "It was tense right until the end....I just kept thinking they were going to take it away from us."

"It would have been heartbreaking. But we hung in there, that's the determination of this playing group."

The Roosters were easily the better side in the first 40 minutes but simply failed to take their try-scoring chances when they were on offer.

The defeat leaves the Tricolours' top four hopes in jeopardy, with a clutch of teams closing in with a logjam on the NRL ladder from second down to eighth spot.

Coach Brian Smith said his players simply lacked the composure to come away with the victory.

"We looked like a team that wasn’t confident on the amount of energy we had to expend in the game," he said.

"We were trying to get it all done at once instead of doing all the little details," he said.

"We had more than enough chances to score tries in first half to put ourselves in reasonably comfortable position but we fluffed those opportunities."

"Most of the time it was because we were in a hurry."

"We were just beaten by a team that had more energy and were prepared to do all the hard stuff."
