So the objective for our league is to win matches 1v1 right? Not to have the most valuable team at the end of the year?

Increasing player value just means we can trade then if we want and then improve the team elsewhere???

The objective of our League is to win enough 1v1s to make the finals, then win through that.

My objective will be to finish as high in the overall rankings as I can (what they call, 'overall focus').
If you want to win as many games as you can in our League that is called a H2H focus and plenty of people do that too.
There is no right or wrong way to play between these two but ideally you don't want to split your focus as one can detract from the other.

But you're correct, player value is purely a means to an end. Buy low, sell high and get better players in to achieve one of the above.

Often if you do well at one focus (overall or H2H) you will happen to do well at the other too, however there are small differences.

Trade choices: if you're matched up against me and we both have Cleary and Hynes, but it's a Sharks bye week if you think you need the H2H win for League ladder you can trade Hynes to like a DCE or Moses who has a good match up that week to get a strong scorer in I don't have, while my Hynes money sits unused on the bench.

Captain choices: say you're ahead in the H2H for the week by 80 points, they have Cleary (captained) to play and three okay guys. You have Ponga (captained) still to play, plus Cleary and two okay guys.
Overall if I thought Ponga was the better captain I'm sticking with it but from a H2H perspective you swapping captain to Cleary could near guarantee you win the match up.
By nullifying their captain their capacity to make up the points difference needed to beat you goes way down. The Cleary's cancel out and you have Ponga and two okay guys PLUS your 80 point advantage vs their three okay guys.
If you leave as is maybe Ponga scores better and you still win, or maybe Ponga gets KO'd and Cleary scores 120 and you lose.

Sounds like this requires a fair bit of fiddling week-to-week. I get it though.

If you want to maximise your chances it can need fiddling during the round, in a strong league that could definitely be the difference between your best possible result or not. When you're newer and just getting the feel I wouldn't stress about mid round changes too much.

If you lose one H2H game in your first season because you didn't do my Captain choices example the one time that situation came up that season so be it. I mean, every chance Ponga scores decent and you win regardless.

You definitely want to put a little bit of time into it each week after TLT to be ready for the next week. Ideally if things are going smooth that's just swap your bye players to bench and maybe switch your VC and C for the week. If there is any late mail you may need to adjust too.

I'd just add that you want to try and be a little conservative about your trading, as one of the biggest issues people face is running out in the back end of the season. I heard on a podcast of a guy whose strategy was to conserve trades. He was a fair way behind but made massive inroads on the sprint home and ended up finishing close to the lead. There's definitely a few ways to skin this cat.

The last YouTube vid I shared had really good practical advice on strategies that were trade conservative and a bit more hands on (and work intensive).

Yeah I'll have to try a bit harder again to save trades this season, the back end of last season was carnage. I did okay as I still had a couple in hand but one or two more would have been massive

I've never really played head to head (more overall focus) but I think initially the goals are the same.

Pick enough decent players (guns/mids) so you have a decent starting 17 and pick enough guys you think will improve in value (mids/cheapies) to make money. Sometimes (like Hopgood last year) you can get a cheapie that'll do both for you. If you have a decent starting 17, the H2H wins tend to take care of themselves.

With your trades, sell those guys that are injured/underperforming (eg not getting the minutes) and focus on buying guys that are going to increase in value. Unless they are a gun, think of it like the stock market (buy low / sell high). The idea is to increase your team value to the extent that you have enough funds for 20 or 21 guns in your final team (the more value, the more guns you can have to cover injuries/restings/bad matchups etc).

Origin period is when H2H and overall tend to diverge. A H2H player generally ignores the Origin period (unless you desperately need wins) and saves a few trades for the run home. Ideally, as a H2H player, you go into finals with 8 trades in the bank, so you can make a move or two each week to swing your match up your way. An overall player might burn trades during Origin period to maximise scoring and try and get ahead of the pack.

H2H can also be a bit of a lottery. You might just be unlucky and continually cop good scores against you regardless of how well your team is doing in an overall sense. For instance, last season I pretty much finished the regular season in the top 4 of all my leagues, with the majority top 2 (before crashing out in most semis). However, one league I didn't even make the top 8.

I think you need to look further ahead then this. You generally use the first couple of rounds trades to make sure you have the guys who are making money, and try and avoid making sideways changes (eg gun to gun).

First I look at if there are any guys who I want to hold for the season (eg Ponga/Cleary/Nicho/Grant), then I'll look at guys who have a decent draw through to Origin, or guys that have a decent early draw and won't play Origin. You can look to avoid guys who have a tough early draw and pick them up when their draw opens up, but I'll be looking to upgrade one of my money makers when they are tapped out.
