Good idea but.....
Another concern is us Shire folk are a fickle lot and in general we tend to be be blase (present company excluded) in regards to supporting our local teams if you use the Sharks as an example.
If the team wasn't successful we would then have 2 drains on the revenue streams which could cause problems down the track.
But if it worked it would be huge for the club.

If the A League side has the same "Sharks" branding, I would be all for it

You can say the same thing about any Sydney-based NRL team, in fact probably any sporting team in Sydney.

Actually don't think it is a serious thought more of a warning shot to the NRL - If the sharks ceased to be the A-league would be all over the south of Sydney and it wouldn't cost them much to do it so.

This discussion deserves its own thread, but anyway.

Seems like the plan would be to have a team represented ting Wollongong, Sutherland and St George playing out of Remondis. So I doubt it could be Sharks branded.

The other chances for one of two expansion slots seem to be Campbelltown/Liverpool, South Qld/Gold Coast, Canberra, NQ and Auckland. Possibly a third Melbourne team.

Of those I reckon Gallop is hell bent on another Sydney based side, so us or Campbelltown.

This is a real chance.

I think it would be very attractive for sponsors. Stadium sponsors would have so much more exposure. We could sell sponsorship for both A league and NRL together or separately.

The A League team could probably be owned by a private group. Most teams are. I think that would probably be a better option. Less risk on our part. I wonder what type of contacts Lyall has in the soccer ownership world? He probably would have been involved in the sale of the WSW I'm assuming. He probably would have dealt with a number of other parties that would be interested in having an A League team.

If a new aleague team where to be run in conjunction with the sharks itwould make choices regarding my loyalty very difficult, I've been a sharks fan longer than I've been sfc.
If they simply run an independent club that makes use of Remondis I'd still be a sydney fan but I would be a member of the new club also

I'm torn like you but if I did switch allegiances, then I would feel like the biggest prick considering I've hated WSW fans who turned their back on SFC.

I wouldn't completely turn my back on the club like some wanderers supporters, I'd keep the jerseys maybe pull it out on grand final day when sfc are there

I highly doubt my brother will change allegiance so will stay a member regardless

I'd be much more likely to show an interest in the team if they were branded as Sharks. I'd feel like I'd have to support both of them, in some ways.

Soccer can go bubble but if its good for Sharkies I'm all for it.

I remember though Gallop stepped in to put the breaks on The Panthers looking at buying WSW. That could be more to do with Gus though.

Unfortunately the bottom line seems to matter more than our loyalty , if an A-league team was to be located in the shire and it will make money it will happen , looking at the game attendance figures for A-league they are in front , NEWS FLASH Sylvania Waters Sharks A-League team 2018 WTF ?

He just gave the NRL a back hander lol.

Good call by Gorman, its been brought up on this forum and others many times how big Soccer is in the shire and surrounds I am not a fan at all of the game but if we can I can see the merit in it to utilise OUR Ground all year round and well I would just have to learn to like the game wouldnt I lol.

The NRL needs to wake up.

Whilst I am certainly open hearing how an A League venture would work, I reckon Gorman, whilst he may be very sincere in his desire to explore bidding for an A league license, is doing a bit of headline hunting at the moment.

Not a bad move either. He's be pushing the "moving forward" line a lot. How better to demonstrate to the press and potential sponsorship partners that we really have moved on than to suggest we are looking at expanding into soccer ...haha, the new movers and shakers of the NRL.... Hahah.

Gorman has said a lot (every interview since his first I think) that he's gotta work with the media and change the narrative of the Club. Certainly doing that.

What if we tried that Olympic Sharks idea again?

Could get both the Sutherland Shire and the Greeks in the St George area engaged.

When it was done previously soccer was in nowhere near the same mainstream position that it's in now. Culturally I think we've probably changed a bit as well. If it was done in the right way, it could work.

Olympic would love an opportunity to get back in.

Joint venture between Sutherland Football Association, Olympic and Cronulla Sharks?

Just rough ideas.

agreed, it certainly seems like he has hit the ground running, there is one thing to talk the talk, I just hope he walks the walk. The club will be in a very good position if he delivers and to me that's extremely exciting

I think he's managed to keep us in the headlines but change the reason. We don't fade away in the offseason and journos have column filler - win, win.

He is still very much thought of as 'the ex-WSW CEO' moreso than 'the Sharks CEO' and he's leveraging that a bit. Hopefully as we get closer to kick off the soccer talk dies down and its Sharks RL all the way.
