Fitz - do you know whether or not the majority of the board will be standing again?

Have many publicly made their intentions not to stand ?

OLYMPIAN Damian Keogh has been nominated to replace Damian Irvine as chairman of the embattled Cronulla Sharks.

The former Sydney Kings basketball star heads an impressive group of nine prominent businessmen who are standing for election at the Sharks AGM in three weeks.

Keogh is chief executive of the advertising, media and marketing firm Val Morgan.

He is a shire local and a lifelong Cronulla supporter.

After retiring from basketball, Keogh took on a prominent marketing role for the Sydney Olympic organising committee.

He is widely regarded as an astute business executive with contacts at the top end of town.

Keogh represented Australia on more than 200 occasions, including at the Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona Olympics.

Irvine stood down from the position last week following the furore over his revelations that players had been injected with horse and greyhound drugs.

...
He may still stand for a position on the board against the new ticket.

The businessmen have the backing of the powerful Sharks junior league who are well represented by the highly regarded De La Salle chairman Darren McConnell, who is also the managing director of a recruitment company. John Dunphy, the boss and owner of Shimano, is also on the ticket.

It also boasts Dino Mezzatesta (general manager Accor Asia Pacific), Paul O'Neile (CEO Boost TEL), Paul McCarthy (executive director Blue Ocean Equities), Kevin Dwyer (principal Warren McKeon Dickson Lawyers), Andrew Boldeman (CEO Group Life TAL) and well known local businessman Craig Airey. The group has the backing of former chairman Peter Gow.

The board hopefuls also fully support suspended coach Shane Flanagan and will investigate the re-appointment of four of the football club staff that were recently sacked.

Flanagan will today meet club officials and could be involved with the Sharks' build-up to their next match against the Warriors.

Some impressive names there. Could have used their support over recent years, but I guess they're here now so we should be grateful.

I hope they are prepared to forego honourariums, at least in the short term.

If a new chair waltzes in and picks up a hefty pay packet I'll be pissed off big time.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, as long as performance justifies it.

I've never heard of Keogh supporting us before (maybe I had but forgot). He wouldn't be bad on the face of it, seems to be well connected etc.

I do have an issue with them putting the boot into the old board though (if that is what they are doing and it's not just media talk). They took on a job that no one was interested in at the time and got the club through. Took a lot of balls and hard work for no personal reward. The club is in a much better position now then when they took over and I am thankful for it.

The board hopefuls also fully support suspended coach Shane Flanagan and will investigate the re-appointment of four of the football club staff that were recently sacked.

I'm not too sure about this. I want Flanagan back, but for the right reasons. You're playing risky games making judgment calls about things which you don't have any information about. Reeks of popularism and opportunism to me. Sounds like Flanagan may be back soon anyway.

Not everything is black and white.

The board has got us through the toughest days and done so in a very good way, with the development and all. They deserve our loyalty.

But that said, if I take away that emotional loyalty, I have to admit that one of the paths forward, which is to embrace a new board and have them bring back the football staff, is at least possibly the best way forward for the club. The new board in theory could be more confident at handling the next few years ahead. The current one were great on a shoe string budget but a theoretical new one could be good on a bigger budget. No one really knows. It's just at least a marginally decent outcome.

It sucks but having a football club rebuild isn't desirable for me.

I would vote for DI in a heart beat but I don't think that means that any alternative ticket should be thrown out with the bath water.

Where were all these people when the club was on its knees 3 years ago?

Seems like now that our financial future is clear, they all want in.

I'm not overly a fan of tickets at elections.

I believe ALL candidates should be required to run independently and that all positions should be chosen on merit alone by the Membership.

Phil Rothfield's use of his position at the Telegraph to push his agenda of editorial vindictiveness and vilification of the current Board and his endorsement and approval of other tickets that serve HIS purpose is pretty disgusting.

As far as I am concerned, the Membership should choose the Board based on an informed choice of the skills, experience and abilities of each contender.

It's an election. The vast majority of voters at elections are entirely uninformed. It'd be fantastic if it could be otherwise, but it'll never happen. And expecting the media not to have an agenda? Madness. This is reality, not some utopian dreamland.
