Cronulla's cash woes came to light in 2005 when the club refused to take up a $10million up-front offer from the NRL to relocate to Gosford.

"The NRL offered us $10 million off the bat and we believe we could have got that offer up to $12 million with some negotiation back in 2005," former football manager Theo Burgess told Rugby League Week last week.

"But we took it to the Sharks board, who were all very conservative, and they knocked it on the head - and that was the end of it - they were in denial.

"The sad thing is that it was for five years so had the club gone when we planned in 2006, that would have ended after 2010 and been an end to the Sharks massive debt."

Earlier this month the NRL refused to fund the club's bid to move five home games a season from the Sharks' traditional home ground, Toyota Stadium to Bluetongue Stadium at Gosford where $100,000 per game of guaranteed revenue is on offer.

Meanwhile, calls for board members to stand down following the problems at Cronulla have been dismissed with Leagues club general manager Michael Wilkins releasing a statement saying all candidates who nominated for board elections this weekend cannot withdraw.

"The Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club is bound by its constitution and is currently in the process of conducting an election for the positions of eight directors,'' Wilkins said in a statement.

"As per the terms of the election process, no candidate can withdraw their nomination after said nominations have closed, that date being 5pm Thursday 23 April 2009.

"Calls for directors to resign would be in violation of the election process and therefore in violation of the club constitution.

"The election process must operate as per the terms of the returning officer and the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club will continue to steadfastly abide by these rules.

"We ask that the election process be allowed to proceed unhindered.''

Every one of you guys who wanted to rally to save Greg Bird last year should now get out to the leagues club and fight for a real cause. Get rid of every one of those board members who are presiding over our club's limp carcass. It doesn't get any more serious than this. I saw what happened in 83 - even tho I was just in my teens. I can tell you this is much worse and there's unlikely to be a lifeline from the NRL.

I find it quite incredible that Barry Pierce has remained silent throughout this debacle. All the problems we have stem from the top and the buck stops at Barry Pierce. How can we attract new sponsorship with the current board in place. It just wont happen. Time to step down Barry whilst there is something to rescue.

Yes. For any other corporation that was run like the Sharks have been - the Board and CEO would be forced out.

I think the NRL may dissolve the board this weekend.

The NRL doesn't have the power to do that. The CSDRLFC, like all clubs, is a standalone entity that has been invited to participate in the NRL. The Cronulla board is elected by the members.

To get rid of the board, directors either have to quit, or face the sack if administrators are appointed.

People power might be our best hope. If enough people are vocal about this mess they've got us into, they just may do the honourbale thing and fall on their swords. The NRL can certainly call for change, but it has no powers to force a board shakeup.

Phil
What do you reckon the likelihood is that the sharks will not survive this? (give us a percentage)

Survial chances?
90 percent - under a new board
Zero - under current board

Does anyone else think that this smells a little fishy?

I know that the current board is not very good, but the prognosis which we have been given by the media has indicated that there is no real hope for us.

How can he come out and say we have a 90% chance of survival if we change the board? That’s very high. To me that indicates that we will almost Definitely survive.

I would have thought that given what has been reported, we would be no better than a 40% chance. Even with the most competent of business people on board. To me this is a little strange....

I think Rothfield is having a guess there. He basically has no confidence in the board - based on what sponsors, players, others are telling him I would suggest. He's probably right - the current directors got us into this hole, what hope is there they can get us out? Not much.

He does seem to backflip on things alot too. Last week he was all for the Central Coast move, not he says it was dumb.
