Come clean

I think it's time for Zappia & the board to come clean and be transparent with what is going on with our club at the moment. At least members should be told and should be entitled to board minutes, votes etc. I'm sick and tired of cloak and dagger garbage and reading propaganda and horrible truths in the paper. If the Sharks want a family club they need to understand the days of the boys club are long gone and need to be open and honest with the community. It is run too much like a business with secret objectives and I have had enough.

hey guys. I've been reading this forum almost every day for over a year now but have never posted. But the way the last couple of weeks have unfolded has motivated me to do more than just get my sharks news and go.

The sharks elections start this weekend and I wanted to ask a possibly dumb question: who is eligible to vote?

I was reading the sharks website talking about non-ticketed football club members (the only place voting is mentioned at all) have to be members for 3 consecutive years to be eligible. I have been a true blue member for a couple fo years now.

So again does anyone know the conditions of eligibility?

Because while we can't get rid of Pierce this time round we can bring in some new blood (although making sure this new blood does want to keep the sharks in the shire long-term) where possible.

Pierce 'untouchable' as Sharks chairman
May 21, 2009 - 6:28AM

Cronulla chairman Barry Pierce will be re-elected unopposed with the NRL and Sharks members powerless to force any major change at the embattled club.

Pierce's position has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks with his role in the cover up of a sex scandal in 2002 and the Sharks' dire financial position fuelling calls for him to stand down.

The club plunged into another crisis on Thursday with major sponsor LG Electronics announcing they would not continue their $700,000 a year agreement, while an accidental punch by CEO Tony Zappia on a former female employee last year was revealed to have cost the club $20,000.

NRL chief executive David Gallop has demanded a face-to-face meeting with the entire board to confront their poor management.

Gallop said the NRL has no power to dissolve the board or to call for resignations, but he wants answers about how the club has failed to deal with behavioural issues.

"Certainly that board has got some tough issues to face up to. That is why I want to get down and get in front of them and hear what they've got to say," said Gallop.

"There's details of it (Zappia's incident) that weren't disclosed at the time and we feel that it's appropriate that they give us a report into that and the other allegations that are made against the club by midday tomorrow (Friday).

"(It has) not necessarily reached the point where we need to be calling for that sort of action (resignations) but we do need to be seeing what their plans are for dealing with their issues."

Cronulla Leagues Club general manager Michael Wilkins confirmed no board members or election nominees can stand down now as voting starts on Friday and runs through to Wednesday.

"Calls for directors to resign would be in violation of the election process and therefore in violation of the club constitution," said Wilkins.

Club sponsor Damian Irvine, of Skin Deep clothing, is one of just three outsiders running against the eight incumbents.

He nominated because he feared the club would die within 12 months due to financial mismanagement.

He wants the club to become more proactive by building a proper business plan in the short and long term, but says change will be difficult as nobody is challenging Pierce's chairmanship.

"There's a lot of people saying that (Pierce should go) but the fact is he is unopposed in this election," said Irvine.

"It's very hard to throw someone out without a valid replacement.

"If membership wants a big change (to the board) then they are restricted in what they can do. They can only put three new people in."

He says the "skeletons" that have come out of Cronulla's closet in recent times will allow the club a fresh start when the elected board is announced at the annual general meeting next Thursday.

"It's probably beneficial that all these skeletons have come out now," he said.

"This election is the start for the Sharks. It allows the place to clean out the skeletons and start afresh.

"I'm pretty positive. I don't think it's the end ... in six or eight years we will be dominant again."

Irvine says the only thing that could make Cronulla's situation worse would be for CEO Zappia to depart.

Zappia has been linked with Parramatta and Manly, but Irvine is adamant the current boss and coach Ricky Stuart are the only men that can save the Sharks.

"If anything can get worse at our club that is one thing that would sink our club. He is a very good operator and the future of the club lies with him and Ricky Stuart."

I think Rothfield is having a guess there. He basically has no confidence in the board - based on what sponsors, players, others are telling him I would suggest. He's probably right - the current directors got us into this hole, what hope is there they can get us out? Not much.

He does seem to backflip on things alot too. Last week he was all for the Central Coast move, not he says it was dumb.

As far as I am concerned, i have had a gut full of all this shyte and IMO the Board should stand down, the Sharks need a fresh start and the media off it's back. The only way forward is with a new Board and a realistic plan to take us into the future. With wholsale change can come new confidence in potential sponsors and potential players. The time has come. Do the right thing Board Members and step aside, bring in an Administrator and let the club have a real go at turning this around.

Oh and while I am at it..... make it clear, with the appointment of an administrator all the clubs links to past player behavior goes with the deparure of the old Board, so don't bother bringing the shyte up anymore media freaks

Agree bout the board members but what has Zappia done other than be unco as hell in knocking some woman out? I choose to trust Ricky Stuart who felt the need to write a whole column in the telegraph dedicated to why sharks need to sign him up before he goes back to Parra or to Manly.

IMO when your CEO goes on TV and says he has just about had enough and his family don't like seeing him going through all this, it's time to pack up and move on. We need STRONG leadership, no matter how hard it gets, the CEO cannot show it. He has to lead from the front, not cave in.

But the question is what support is he getting from the Board probably nothing.
They all need to step down.

I have no confidence in any of them at all!

Barry Pierce holds the position of Sharks club Chairman and CEO of the ARL .....how does that work....seems like conflict of interest to me.
I would think the roll of club Chairman of the Sharks is a full time job??????
Taking your eye off the ball creates the sh** the club is going thru at the moment

Barry Pierce and the board must be replaced - their control of the recent probs with Christchurch, Reni Matua is unforgivable....who recruited Matua ????? Ricky, Pierce, the Board.....what a disgrace......he came to our club with a Ricky lifeline....what a joke...now i ask the question who is accountable???? answer... the board, ricky, pierce have damaged our club with their decission.....pissed off our sponsors and dragged our club thru the media. Get to our AGM Thursday 28th May 7pm lets fill the auditorium with passionate Shark supporters and voice your opinion of our Chairman & Board.

Good luck, but you need to be a 3 year paid up member to vote.

Was it covered up? I remember this coming out last year quite clearly as soon as it happened and Greg Bird thought it would allow him to play in the semis (showing how old it is for those stupid journalists!!!)
