Bombed signed Mcinness.

Not arguing your point - a couple of great recruits and what appears to be a top line coach -just hope the decision makers are sharing our pain in this gap year that they created. 50 year supporters like myself and many others on here are hurting .

The promised land of top 4 will surely be worth it I admit ….

I got the impression Bomber came into the negotiations late and McInnes signed knowing we were talking to Fitzgibbon or atleast there was no guarantees Bomber was coach.

So sounds like as with other signings board still involved then?

The board has an influence on every signing - approving or otherwise of the coaches opinion - the recent rejection of Pangai for instance ..

Short term pain for long term gain. Should help us try to move towards being a top 4 team rather than a 7th/8th team. Good to see the board are ambitious
You shouldn't be a member of ANY board if you are not ambitious. This is not unique to us and the same ambitions of every club board.

Ha. Just for fun I looked at the Tigers forum and the most recent post was about their board!:

"The club has got the core group to grow this club says the Chairman! Pascoe / Maguire/Hartigan are all safe and will be at the club next season this is regardless of what any REVIEW DETERMINES!!!
No changes the club can stick there MEMBERSHIPS after 11 seasons of failure this is all the clubs got for its stake holders 😂😂😂😂😂😂 the place is a joke !"

Love it!

Yep. I was critical of how they handled the JMo thing but ultimately they've done a fantastic job.

We're in good hands.

I still don't get what else they could have done and why people were critical of it. Sacking a coach is never a pretty endeavour.

They were never going to let Bomber know he wasn't being kept till we'd found a replacement and Fitz hadn't signed till that day, negotiations had been going on but nothing signed.

Is it the timing of it.

  • Would pre season have been better ? ...yeah maybe but Fitz hadn't signed.
  • Would later in the season be better ? Maybe but doing it earlier gives Fitz more time to prepare. And doesn't make much of a difference.

Could it have been less public ? Probably but it's rugby league, something like this never stays quiet for long. And rumours suggest the leak came from the Roosters not us, which I believe when you consider we were talking to Bellamy for months and Fitz for a bit too.

Should we have let Bomber see out the year ? That would have been the nice thing to do perhaps but not the smart thing to do. The constant media scrutiny on whether it was the right decision, constant questions at press conferences and Bombers likely reluctance to help with any transition to Fitz. He would have wanted to do his own thing to advertise his coaching ability.

And I think we can all agree that we're looking better next year with Fitz, our recruits and Price.

It's been discussed to death mate, I'm not bothered by any of it.

As I said, the club is in great hands now, the best it's ever been in really.

latest chairman's update is out - club is looking to amalgamate with Park Beach Bowling Club in Coffs Harbour:

https://www.sharks.com.au/news/2022/02/16/chairmans-address---february-2022/

In some very exciting news, the Club has progressed discussions for a potential amalgamation with Park Beach Bowling Club in Coffs Harbour. The Club was formed in 1959 and is now a medium sized Bowling Club with three grass greens, 66 gaming machines, food and beverage outlets and around 3,500 members, of which 312 are Bowling Members.

Whilst we still have some work to do, we will be aiming to get this to a vote of our members at some time in the near future. As we did with Kareela Golf Club, we will be scheduling information sessions for our Members on the Park Beach Bowling Club amalgamation and what this opportunity means for the Cronulla Sharks and for Park Beach Bowling Club. We will advise further details on the information sessions once we have approval from Park Beach Bowling Club to take this opportunity to a vote.

Our AGM is penciled in for Wednesday, March 30, with all details of AGM to be forwarded in the coming weeks. If restrictions ease we will be looking to hold the AGM at Sharks at Kareela however if we still have restrictions in place it may be a virtual meeting. More information on this to follow.

Also from the same article, the new leagues is looking to be completed early to mid 2023

More than $20m in funding in doubt after NSWRL boardroom brawl

More than $20 million of annual funding to the NSW Rugby League is in jeopardy as the NRL prepares to investigate a boardroom brawl that threatens to tear the state organisation apart.

NSWRL chairman George Peponis and Nick Politis sensationally resigned following an annual general meeting on Friday afternoon due to a raft of issues, including the controversial decision not to allow Cronulla chief executive Dino Mezzatesta to stand for a place on the board and the ousting of the only female director, Deborah Healey.

A raft of complaints are set to be submitted about the election process which, if upheld, could result in the AGM being ruled null and void. The Herald can reveal one complaint centres on whether incumbent director Geoff Gerard, who was re-elected on Friday, is fit to stand for the board.
Sources with knowledge of the situation say it is alleged Gerard previously failed to disclose a conflict of interest when a company he was involved in earned a cleaning contract with the NSWRL. Gerard declined to comment when contacted by the Herald.

Several officials wanted the AGM postponed for three weeks, enough time to provide a definitive legal answer as to whether Mezzatesta had a right to run at the ballot box. Instead, the election went ahead as scheduled, with Gerard retaining his seat and William Johnstone earning a directorship at the expense of Healey.
The development eased the pressure on NSWRL chief executive David Trodden, who now has the board numbers to survive a move against him. However, that could change if the AGM is ruled invalid and Peponis and Politis opt to return to the fold as part of a fresh round of voting.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys is poised to launch an investigation into the matter.

“At the end of the day, corporate governance is paramount,” V’landys said. “We fund this organisation and this organisation needs to be for the betterment of rugby league in this state, not for any other reason.

“We’re going to make sure that is the one and only objective. We’ve been advised that numerous complaints are coming forward. Naturally, we want to make sure the money we provide is being managed properly.”

The COVID-19 crisis has affected the level of funding from the ARLC to the state bodies in recent years. However, the NSWRL can’t operate and propagate junior football without the tens of millions of dollars from head office.

Asked about the matter of Gerard and cleaning contracts, V’landys said: “We will investigate any matter relating to corporate governance. If that matter is raised with us, we will certainly investigate it.”
Mezzatesta nominated for the board on January 20, but was informed he was ineligible to run just 48 hours before voting. The NSWRL received legal advice that he was unable to run because he is a paid employee of an affiliated club. This comes despite examples where this has previously occurred, such as when former director Ray Dib was also reportedly being paid in his role as Canterbury chairman.

“The NSWRL board has no intention of breaching the confidentialities of a private board meeting yesterday, but it objects to the manner in which events that transpired were reported,” NSWRL deputy chair John Anderson said.
“In particular, the board is disappointed by what appears to be a targeted personal attack on chief executive David Trodden for simply doing his job.

“The board will now move to consider the casual vacancy that exists for one director and the appointment of a new chair.
“Until those appointments are made, the board will not make any further comment on any circumstances arising from the meeting yesterday.”

The scandal is an unwanted distraction for NSW coach Brad Fittler, whose side has won three of the past four State of Origin series.
