If this is going to happen, it needs to happen soon.
Hopefully we have a solid plan B if this doesn't plan out or the NRL gives us some dispensation considering how long it took them to make a decision and how little time they gave us to shed a player.

Ava Seumanufagai is grappling with a life-changing decision.

Cronulla need to shift a player before the start of the season to be salary-cap compliant and Seumanufagai has been identified as the man who can most easily make that happen. The 27-year-old has received interest from Super League outfit Leeds and needs to make a call in coming days.

The former Tiger is contracted to the Sharks and knows he is a strong chance of winning an NRL premiership if he stays put. He also has a desire to one day play in England, but is questioning whether the timing is right.

If he goes, the team benefits. If he stays put, he knows he has something to offer.

“It’s probably just the playing squad,” Seumanufagai told the Herald when asked the biggest factor in his decision.

“It’s a tough squad this year, really experienced. Just the move over there, I’ve got a daughter who is one-and-a-half.

“I’m not too sure what’s going on. I’ve been reading that Leeds has been interested, but in terms of my decision, I haven’t made a formal decision yet.”

Cronulla need to shift $353,000 from their salary cap and Seumanufagai’s deal is believed to be in that vicinity. It’s unlikely he will get an extension when his contract expires at the end of the season, while the Leeds offer is believed to offer security for the next three years.

The New Zealand product said the Sharks weren’t putting undue pressure on him to leave.

“No, everyone has been fine,” he said.

“No one has spoken to me about that, no one has spoken to me about cap pressures either.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m coming to training and doing my job, nothing has changed.

“I’m not too sure what’s going on. I can’t put any [timeframe] on it, I’m not sure myself.

“It’s all up in the air, I’m sorry I can’t give you a scoop.”

Departing Cronulla CEO Barry Russell said he was heartbroken that a current squad member would have to make way before round one.

“[Seumanufagai] has obviously been in the press and that’s one scenario that I think is looking positive and will be a good outcome for Ava and for the club,” Russell said.

“That’s one scenario. We’re in discussions with the salary-cap auditors on a whole range of options, whether we prepay some money, whether we can call some of that back. They are all the levers we’re looking at but ultimately we’re looking for what least affects the playing squad and is most beneficial to the player who goes.

“I’m mindful of the players because we have such a tight group. It’s delicate, that’s why I can’t come out and say ‘he’s going to go, it’s going to be him.’

“They have families and lives and kids and we’ve got less than [a week until round one]. That’s why we are taking our time. We meet every day, we’re providing updates on situations and are talking to managers and clubs.

“We’ll get the desired outcomes and I’ve got no dramas we will be compliant.”

I only feel a tiny bit bad because for many people it’s still an enviable position...

True but it's a bit different when you're almost being forced to go overseas to somewhere you may not want to go.

He's kind of damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

If he decides to stay, does releasing/not signing Seggy put us under the cap?

Considering or forward options coming through, a 3 year deal actually sounds like a win for Ava. And let's face it, he could likely be back in a year with a good showing over there.
