If Critta put together a good year of form on a three year contract he has the whole next season (also presumably playing well) to try and squeeze an upgrade/extension out of club before he becomes eligible to negotiate end of season 2. I think being able to upgrade the last season of a good players contract is one of the best tools clubs have to retain their stars. You'd expect, like Nicho, that he'd get a good sized bump once he's proved he's capable. Which he might or might not do.
As you say, Hynes is same boat, he can negotiate from November this year.
If he is playing well could be better for both parties to extend and upgrade him mid year than leave it to go to market.
ie instead of us paying him (to use old numbers) 2023 600k, 2024 600k, 2025 1.1m, 2026 1.1m, 2027 1.1m because we had to fend off other offers we get in early and upgrade 2024 and pay him something like 2023 600k, 2024 800k, 2025 900k, 2026 900k, 2027 900k
Costs us an extra 200k up front on 2024 cap but saves us triple that over 2025-207.
Attractive to him as it locks in an extra 200k (almost) straight away with security, and knowing if he keeps killing it we can probably look at doing same again in 2026 when he turns 30.
