I don't think we'll have anyone new this year, maybe next though as you say mate

Yeah I agree, Anderson was released to IMO to free up money and keep the Sharks under the cap after getting Reni.

Just my opinion,

To get any more players the Sharks would have to shed more players to free up funds, So I guess the question should be who would you get rid of to get Crocker etc.

Sandman welcome back,

Think before you type crap like the above how could you think we are over?

The Sharks have been active in negotiations to extend Anderson’s current contract by 2 years before this most recent development this contract was for 2010 onwards and as nothing to do with the cap this year.

The reason he was bounced was because he only wants to play half the season no doubt this frees up some money to share around this year but it has nothing to do with the cap.

Sandman we have snitloads when you work out the cap especially at the end of this year.

No Bird 380k
Ross 400k
Anderson a min of 120k probably more
Misi and Covell I think signed one year contracts so add prob another 300k

Thats 1.2m all up ready for a spending spree and retention.

We dont rort the cap only the ...... do :D.

Well put, Willy.

Reni is only a 1 year gig too. So is Hughes. Barrett only 2.

We're in a good position to hit the market HARD in 2010.

Carney or Matt King would be good 4 us,but in my opinion we cant wait for NEXT YEAR, we have been doing that since'73. We need speed out wide first and foremost and it would appear we are playing for survival, we need to win it THIS YEAR!,which may go a long way financially to surviving. If we can't get a back up centre immediately then Bird or as i have said before Crocker may be the difference between a win/loss in the finals so if cheap enough we should take him.Bringing back Mat Rogers if he falls out of favour up north in favour of their new guys would also be a beauty for one yr.

Sharks jumped the gun: Thompson
By Steve Jancetic
AAP
Fraser Anderson's manager claims Cronulla `jumped the gun' in releasing his star client before he had signed off on a deal to play rugby union in Japan.

The drama surrounding Anderson's proposed code switch took a surprising twist on Wednesday with player-manager Lance Thompson saying the 24-year-old backrower still had a contract with the Sharks.

Cronulla on Tuesday announced they had let Anderson go immediately after he had asked the club for a release later this year to take up a deal in Japan starting in July.

But Thompson fired back saying the Sharks had no right to terminate Anderson's contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season.

"The Sharks have jumped the gun as no release from the Sharks will be effective unless and until Fraser signs official contracts with the Japanese company concerned," Thompson said in a statement.

"At the moment he is still contracted to the Sharks. The Sharks are aware that it is the case."

Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia however is adamant the club had every right to let Anderson go.

Asked if he believed Anderson would not play with the Sharks in 2009, Zappia said: "That's completely our understanding."

NRL boss David Gallop, in New Zealand to help launch the Warriors season, backed Cronulla's decision to let Anderson go rather than utilise the 24-year-old's services until the end of June.

"What we're saying is players need to make a choice," Gallop told NZPA.

"They are either rugby league players - and that's a fulltime profession at the elite level - or they are rugby union players.

"You can't play rugby league and also play rugby union in your holidays."

Meanwhile, Zappia said the club had not discussed replacing Anderson with someone from outside the club.

The Sharks had been linked with a move for former Melbourne backrower Michael Crocker - whose football career remains in limbo as he awaits a visa clearance to join English club Hull.

"Up until now the subject hasn't been brought up, we'll just deal with one issue at a time - we haven't gone down that path of looking at a replacement," Zappia said.

"Whether we do or not, we've got some good young players, maybe it's an opportunity for some of them."

our back row stocks are getting thinner every time I pick up a paper and we have very limited options in the centres at this point in time - simmonds can not stay there, williams can not play there, reni? phhtttt.

I can't see Sticky recruiting a bloke like Manu Vatuvei. Stick likes good solid players and while Manu is a freak and I love watching the bloke he just wouldn't fit into the Shark's high percentage, well structured play. Cov's is no centre and also no certainty to be even contracted for 2010.

I don't know Bowen's situation in regards to how long he is contracted to Nth.QLD for, but I do know he'd be pretty pricey. Kearney won't be moved into the halves for us unless we run out of options. You don't move a bloke from the halves, persist with him at fullback at NRL level accepting his stuff ups as learning curbs just to move him back to the halves after he starts getting recognised on the rep stage.

I agree we have a lot of back rowers. The quality is dwindling a bit though.

I don't agree that all the rejects go to Canberra. Canberra rarely buy a player, especially a back. They bought Monas and he went sh!t hot for 'em, same with Colin Best. Bronx Goodwin is another, but all these guys were interim measures until beasts like Justin Carney continued through the system.

Ando went after the quick buck in japan, who could blame him ? But he has payed the price for doing so and he had to be sacked on the spot !
As for replacing him the maths is simple, if we have $$$$ to play with as a result of his departure and there are other quality unsigned players in the pool for 09, then sign them now regardless of what position they play remember no player is immune from season ending injuries, just ask reece williams, how much was he missed last season ? It would have been good to have a player like crocker ready to fill the void .

Sticky will be chasing another back rower/front rower :D . But i would be looking for a outside back for sure . One question when was the last time we scored 100 ,90 even 80 meter try from a back that came from just sheer speed ?

Stated in today's Leader Anderson has been offered $800k for two seasons it also says that we were chasing Croker but Zappa has denied this but I have heard other wise so has the Leader a number of clubs are chasing him Souths/Bulldogs I think he knows that he only has one good year in him so he might be good for one season Souths and Bulldogs are rebuilding so I feel he would come to us as one last hit out in saying that I also thought him and Sticky had a fall out at Roosters
