its FIFA, they have a massive hard on for France and they have a massive dislike for the UK, they are even trying to make it a proper rule that the 2018 world cup can only go to Europe just to rule out Australia's bid cause its that bloody good

tbf some of those "dives" arent really dives, if someone is running at full pace and gets knocked off balance, away you go

Maybe they should change the World Cup name to the Dive Cup guys becuase that what it really is.

This is what most remember of the world cup it will be hard to forget and I honestly think this did a lot of damage to the sport.

I've just arrived home from playing twilight 6 a side soccer. My team consists of all over 35 players & all but 1 ex league players. tonite was our 1st loss since the comp has been graded. some how we made it to B grade. tonite we played in rain with thunderbolts & lightning, very very frightening; & were flogged by a team of 20 yr olds.they may have won the game but we won every challenge, shoulders/elbows can be used in many ways the ref can't always see!
Bottom line, awesome fun, work up an appetite for drinking beer with mates & NO diving in our town!

So we agree then its a sport up to its neck in corruption and dog acts.

I guess the lack of a mention of everything else I said suggests you agree with that too.

I've got nothing against people falling over. Its the staying down until the whistle is either blown in your favour, or it becomes apparent that the whistle is not going to be blown in your favour, that constitutes a dive.

pretty much but no sport is without its problems

due to the crap from the countries that do it, its now a toss of a coin wether the player is faking or actually winded or injured and some knocks appear to be soft but can do some damage

Agreed no sport is without its problems. But its a fundamental roadblock for soccer in this country. In order for it to appeal to Aussies, they have to play the game different, and in order for it to appeal with even more Aussies, they gotta have some success on the World stage, which they can't do playing their 'Aussie' style.

Its not an easy problem to solve. Refs can't be doctors too and have to take a player on his word when they go down injured. The repercussions of a ref telling a player to get up cause he thinks he's faking, could be enormous.

League is relatively lucky where diving is concerned because it goes against the grain of the whole spirit of the game, and is shunned on by players, fans and officials alike, so it remains rare. Soccer's problem is that its become part of the game and is widely accepted.

oh it appeals alright, wait till world cup fever hits and the last world cup we made it to the last 16 where we were cheated against, could run with it, us against the world

we did have our own style, hard bastards but we lost focus on actually playing football, no team liked playing the socceroos because we were rough

Yeah, we were tough, and all the Europeans had a sook about it, which got the attention of the refs, which opened the way for Italy to exploit our style with some good old fashioned fabrication and send us on our merry way.

Same sh!t will happen in this World Cup.

This is a no brainer.

Australia.

Sharks can win Premierships in '11, '12, and '13.

Both achievements would go down as the two greatest team sport achievements of all time.

It is a no-brainer. Sharks to win the premiership.

This country isn't seriously ready to win the WC. We don't value the game like the top sides, we don't have the culture and technical capacity. It would paper over all the gaping holes we have in our football development.

And most of all it would make us even more bloody dependent on sporting success for national self-esteem.

Sharks winning something on the other hand... there are gaping holes, but a win would fill them with money (oodles and oodles of money...).

btw Peach- you realise that we won't make it out of the group stage this year don't you? And that we may not even score a goal? Prepare yourself for disappointment mate.

Love soccer, doesnt really get a fair go in this country in terms of viewing and I don't get why. Would be a dream come true to see the Socceroos win a world cup but I would take the Sharks winning a premiership any day of the week.

IMO if you'd rather see any other sporting achievement happen in the world you're not a real Sharks fan.

That's a bit harsh, Mark.

I'd take the Sharks winning the premiership any day of the week over anything else but I would like to see Australia win a World Cup as well.

I love both games and I can't see why there has to be such hatred for another code.

It is a sport after all.

For me, too much sport is never enough.

Just my two cents.

IMO if you want to see Australia win a world cup over the Sharks win a premiership that's fair enough, but that makes you a soccer fan first and foremost and a Sharks fans second.

I'm a Sharks fan first and foremost. A Sharks premiership is something I yearn for constantly and I would rather it happen than almost anything else.

Trust me, mate. I want to see the Sharks win a premiership first, second and last over anything.

It remains one of my ultimate ambitions.

It's something I've been dreaming about since I was a kid.
