At just 20 years of age half Wade Graham sees potential in his new-look Cronulla Sharks side, likening it to that of his former club Penrith.
“This side has a lot of potential,” Graham told sportsnewsfirst.com.au.
“I see the Sharks in a similar position to what Penrith were a couple of year’s back, a young side with a big young forward pack.
“It’s a good opportunity for me to be a part of that building process and still be there when we have success.”
Despite the team finishing 14th last season, Graham hopes to play a part in Cronulla making the finals like he did with Penrith in 2010, something he believes possible off the back of the Sharks gigantic forward pack.
“It’s a fairly good forward pack, I think the team is a lot better than where they finished up last year,” he said.
“There’s potential there it’s just a matter of jelling together and getting some wins on the board.
“If you look at it, it’s actually a well balanced side.
"Our forwards are our strength, Snowy (Kade Snowden) debuted in origin side, Douggie’s (Luke Douglas) not far away, you’ve got Anthony Tupou and we just signed Jeremy Smith, an international back rower, then you’ve got Paul Gallen who got golden boot lock of the year.”
The crafty ball player made his first grade debut at the age of 17 for the Panthers in 2008 at which time his was playing in the Toyota Cup.
The former Hills Sports High School student has signed a two year deal which will see him in the shire until the end of 2012.
After three seasons with the Panthers, the squeeze of the salary cap pushed Graham to the Sharks.
With Shane Flanagan at the helm, his first full season as the first grade coach, Graham has challenged himself to step his game up.
“I grew up in Penrith, it's all I’ve ever known and wanted to do was playing for Penrith growing up,” said Graham.
“It’s a fresh start for me and prove to all the boys I want to be in first grade.
“Its different environment, a different feel, different club. I’m really liking it.
“We had a bit of a chat about (stepping up) today.
“As a whole squad we are all looking to improve."
“This time of years more about getting physically right but I’ve been running the halves,” he said.
“Depends on the trials and how we go as to what the dynamics of the side will be.
“We have to figure out how the side works together and what role we will be playing.”
