Wade Graham says he must prove himself again at new club Cronulla
Steve Gee
January 08, 2011 12:00AM

HE'S the Penrith prodigy once anointed a future Australian five-eighth.

But Cronulla new boy Wade Graham admits he'll be starting from scratch as he looks to fill Trent Barrett's No. 6 jersey this year.

Squeezed out of Penrith by the successful partnership of Luke Walsh and Travis Burns, Graham will pair with Tim Smith in the halves under new Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan. And though he's convinced the change will reignite his stalled progress, the 20-year-old Blacktown junior will be treating 2011 like a rookie season.

"I've got to prove that I can be in the first-grade side here so I'm starting again pretty much at the Sharks," Graham said. "I can't wait for the season to start."

The Sharks enter 2011 desperate to shake the failure of the past two seasons on the back of an active recruitment drive that snared St George Illawarra premiership winner Jeremy Smith as well as local junior Colin Best from Souths and Cowboys winger John Williams.

Graham admitted he hoped to be a Panther for life, but the nuggety playmaker is now relishing the prospect of starting afresh.

And he has already circled the round-three clash with his former teammates at CUA Stadium.

"It should be exciting. I've got a lot of good friends out there," Graham said. "Nothing has changed in our friendship, just obviously I play for a different team now so once you get on the field it's footy again."

Graham and Kelly are the future long term Sharks halves pairing. Unless Timmy Smith decides to play well for a change.

Sharks star to miss trials
BY BRAD FORREST
01 Feb, 2011 04:00 AM
CRONULLA Sharks new recruit Wade Graham has broken down at training and could miss the Sharks two NRL trial games which start next week.
The boom former Panthers five-eighth limped off with a suspected torn hamstring during a team training session in stifling conditions yesterday at Toyota Stadium, where captain Paul Gallen had his first run of the off-season.

‘‘I felt just a twinge while training last week, but it felt like a tear today,’’ said Graham, whom coach Shane Flanagan is hoping will prove a replacement for retired Trent Barrett.

Graham will definitely miss the first trial against Manly at Brookvale Oval on Friday week, February 11, and will be lucky to play against the Newcastle Knights at Muswellbrook on February 26.

His place is likely to be taken by exciting youngster Albert Kelly, who has impressed in off-season training after getting an early taste of NRL under former Sharks coach, Ricky Stuart. Experienced utility John Morris (recovering from a knee operation) and winger Stewart Mills (groin) are also unlikely for the first trial.

Sorry

Could be a blessing in disguise if Kelly goes well.

The article also mentions that Mills and Morris are in doubt. Pity about Mills, I want to see him get some footy under his belt and push for a start Rd1, but at least we have JMo well covered.

You just had me worried AB I was expecting to see he was going to miss half the season or something.

The only real positive is it gives Smith and Kelly more of a chance to prove that they should get the other halves spot but they will have to go off how they trained together for combos.

I was hoping the same with Mills AB.

Look at it this way, if Mills can't play the trials at least it means he'll get a real game of NRL/NYC/NSW Cup!!!

From what I understand he hasn't played a single game in those three comps?

I know this is bad for us but on the bright side. Jmo and Graham are both definitley going to be in the NRL team. It is a shame we dont get to see Mills before the season but we will now get a real good look at Flanagan, Kelly, Kosie Leilei, Tongia, and some other young backs.

So long as these injuries are not to bad i think there isnt much to worry about

It's weird that they said Kelly and Porter are 'on standby' for the trials if Graham can't play.

I would have thought during the trials at least Kelly would get a run, I thought that was the point of the trials?

Looks like maybe Flano is using these are warm up games rather than to try combinations etc?

I would have thought they mean for starting the game.

Bad news to hear about Graham but on the up side it gives Kelly his time to shine lets hope he hits it all guns blazing.

I hope Kelly plays out of his skin in the trials so he can land a 1st grade spot in the halves with Wadeo.
