I get what you're saying gumby about seeing some guys look good in NRL straight away, having only got a chance through injury - well no wait actually they got a chance through playing cup well enough to be next man up... it's rare the injury call up happens to be a nobody from ron macey who takes the NRL by storm, probably never. If Iro gets a chance and goes well nobody will be shocked because he has put himself in position to do that, he hasn't yet put himself in position to flat out win the jersey. Fitz obviously disagrees so far Talakai has lost the jersey (he almost did!).

People in here have been calling for the likes of Iro and Trindall to start or we'll lose them for years. Iro still hasn't made any of the 17 NRL teams, Trindall put himself in a position to make ours when an opportunity presented. I don't think he demanded it but he was clear next man up. While there were things Moylan was being unfairly lashed for I was for removing him weeks, probably months earlier. I also was watching Trindall at the same time wondering why he couldn't give us a bit more in cup to increase the pressure to make it happen.

It's easy to say from the keyboard it is worth the risk but if picking a player on 'just in case' and 'maybe' and 'giving a go' costs you two wins in those 4-5 weeks Fitz job comes into question.
I'd be more open to the trying stuff ideas if I didn't understand from coaches perspective why he can't always do that.

I hope he looks at a lot of different options through preseason and trials and may the best men win. Won't see me upset if Iro in centre round 1.

Our coach doesn’t have the balls to drop players. Talakai played shithouse there for a while. Kept getting picked. Took him 22 games or something to drop Moylan. Trindall killed it the first 3 weeks he played. Got dropped. Explain that? We need to blood some players next year. Simple as that.

I think there's room for a middle ground. Any coach would be stupid if they didn't put pressure on players to earn the jersey. Borts right in saying neither Tricky or Iro were really taking the jersey, which they should be aspiring to do. Granted, this can sometimes be hard in the chop and change of cup footy.

However, on the other side, Fitz was way too loyal to guys who were struggling. After the storm flogging we should have seen mass changes, but we persisted for another month.

I think Fitz has it right with the young guys, but needs to be a bit harsher on the senior guys which will create more opportunities for the rookies to step up and audition.

If I recall correctly Fitz basically indicated Trindall only got the job because he couldn’t persist with Moylan any longer.

You could infer that better form from Trindall in cup (regardless of his sensational 1 from 3 in NRL to open season) could have seen him be given the job sooner.

Different observers can claim he was playing well enough, had played well enough in the past, Moylan was bad enough to drop blah blah blah that’s all subjective and irrelevant to Fitz decision (he could be wrong, it’s still his decision)

But from what Fitz has said it’s quite possible the jersey could have been his potentially much sooner if he’d played to what the coach expected of him

Yeah all completely fair. I just think the 'kick up the arse' style dropping can occur regardless of the replacements form. In this case it should have happened after that storm game.

The bloke he was covering for came back.
Plus it was the first three rounds and why change a halves pairing that got them to second place the year previous once Hynes came back.

BUT Moylan should've been dropped once the cracks started.

I agree it's definitely easy to say things behind the keyboard, but when that defensive edge was the way it was because of the players he chose, he was pretty stubborn to not act on fixing it.

Yeah the back ups had a few average games in NSW Cup, but not sure why people, who were against changes, just stuck to those few games against the majority of good/great performances Iro and Trindall had during the NSW Cup season.

To be fair though, if Fitz is losing often when it's either his first choice or second choice players then his job should be questioned. He chose to either re-sign, extend or sign those players, he either has poor judgement in recruitment or his coaching is not up to it.

I personally still think Fitz is learning and developing and I believe we will get great things from him as our coach.

Re-signed for 2 years.
Happy for Toby to be sticking around but really hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Really don't want to see the majority of this squad extended before a ball is kicked

Love it from him, but don't love this line - "I think I speak for most of the team when I say we need to go on a drinking ban," he said.

Might just be the way he speaks openly, but hopefully not too many on the piss down regularly down there.

Probably not as much as it used to be but the boys would sink plenty of beers

The percentage which are footy/athlete focused the vast majority of the time through most of their careers would be very low.
