I'd prefer to pay for the NRL rather than a bunch of crap I never watch. I'll be very happy when games start being streamed.

Exactly, I only have Foxtel for the sport, mostly NRL. Hardly touch the other channels. So I'd rather get rid of Foxtel and just pay for the NRL presumably for less than Foxtel of course.

And you will only have to pay for 6 months of the year.

Looks like Foxtel have a guaranteed income for a while after the smart people go to Netflix and sports streaming.

Gotta remember, streaming services use your internet data so if you are a lite user generally you will need to pay for more data per month.

Foxtel also has the STB recording as well as High Definition and you can use it anywhere you like as well with Foxtel Go.

I've got all sharks games recorded on my STB at home as well as the NBA final series and season 5 of GoT.

That's great Gibs and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same as you. But I'm betting there are also plenty who are in my boat who would rather pay for a stream without having to pay for a bunch of content they don't want.

I wonder with netflix and sports streaming - what the cost in the future will be to rival foxtels range - will we have to pay subscription fees for each different sport we wanna watch and will foxtel start dropping their prices if people start getting it cut off.

I think there could be many ways they could do it. What I'd love is for the NRL to reach an agreement with a high quality streaming provider. Anyone who is a member of an NRL club either gets free access to their team's games live or at least at a large discount. I think that would really see memberships rise.

Actually No Gibbs, that data can be sorted out quite easily to be honest bit like Netflix and IInet all free, providers will line up to offer it as free content and even if you streamed it in UHD (cant be done FTA not sure if Foxtel even offers it) it would only be about 3gigs a game, say you watch every game you would only be looking at approx 100gig a month I do more then that on Stan and Netfix every month its metered as well as watching all games in HD streamed :).

The NRL could even make money from archived services.

The content on Foxtel basic is crap then you have to pay for sports.

My guess Foxtel will come out with a Sports package eventually to ward off others and if google get a hold of it Foxtel will be dead in the water.

Netflix in aus is crap compared to the uS,

The streaming services wont be able to rival Foxtel until they start getting liscences for programs which will cost them a tonne and in turn increase their monthly rate

I think you will find the NRL and the AFL will probably start streaming their games directly to the customer, completely bypassing foxtel for example. They'll still have a few games on FTA each week though. It's still a while away I'm guessing but that's probably we're sport broadcasting is heading.

I think this is definitely where it's headed. And the NRL talking to Google makes me think they're already crunching the numbers.

Whilest probably true most people watch more than 1 or 2 sports, I cant remember off the top of my head what the monlthy/yearly cost of the nrl was I think it worked out to be either 8 or 10 a month. Lets say you like AFL, NRL, Union, Ice Hockey and basketball. That's 5 sports right there, basing it on the 8 per month that's aready 45 spent or the 10 per month thats your 50 and it only covers yourself. Whereas with foxtel you have the ability to cover more than just the 1 person in the household, eg my mum hates sport, my dad loves it, They have the sports pack as it includes shows mum likes to watch and keeps dad happy.

Or applying a bit of heat to Foxtel for the upcoming negotiations in order to extract more cash from them. I just don't think there's a realistic chance of the streaming thing happening for a while yet, not at least until many more homes are hooked up to the NBN.

Not so sure about that. Yes, there are obviously many people who like to watch a heap of sport, but I think plenty are happy with their NRL, others with AFL etc. Also, I'm sure it will be set-up so you don't have to necessarily pay a monthly premium if you don't watch a lot of games. I read an article from an industry analyst saying there likely be options to pay for one game at a time. So if you're a NRL nut you'd pay your monthly subscription, if you wanted to watch the odd game of AFL you might pay a few dollars for a game once in a while.

The bottom line is there will be options which is what I'm happy about. I don't like the requirement of needing to pay foxtel for their hardware and be locked into a contract, or not being able to turn off their service for the off season. The sooner it ends, the better.....imo anyway.

I will agree as I watch US as well but that will slowly change just like it did i the UK it takes time but they have a good model.

I don't think you understand how Netflix operates internationally, if anyone will be paying more it will be Foxtel when the bidding wars erupt if anything Netflix will pay less as they will get them under international licenses.

You alos have to look at companies like Amazon Prime and Google these companies have very deep pockets and wouldn't blink at taking Foxtel on, what happens if they get in a biding war for the NRL rights and either pay tooo much or lose.

Whilst foxtel has tried to reinvent itself with crap like presto etc the fact is it looks like they have missed the boat way to much greed for tooooo long serves them right really.

Gibs you work for them dont you so can you tell me what last years revenue was for Foxtel...

Netflix US was over 5billion alone and gaining by about 1b a year.......

I wonder if you would think the same if you didn't work Foxtel

Spot on and this is where the other services differ looking forward to it to be honest.

Right. But if you want to disconnect for the off season you then need to pay another equipment and set-up fee which is $150 when you re-connect. It is as good as a contract, they're not stupid.

Actually it can be done all you need is approx 3Mbps for SD

Its more to do with broadcast rights and $$$ that's why its not being done and only a low quality stream on mobile devices its nothing to do with bandwidth issues.
