QLD probably played as well as they could, almost the perfect game.

NSW were negative the whole time. Negative team, negative outlook- you could see they didn't really think they could win- and negative result.

Pearce was superb behind a beaten pack. Baz was okay. Hayne quite average... he has to learn not to be so lazy if he's to go to the same level as Slater. Its something Gidley has over him actually.

NSW need to be more aggressive on their left edge. Its one thing putting Beau Scott (who did a pretty good job imo) up against Inglis and trying to shut down that side a bit, but you still need some strike against Tonga who's not going to slaughter you- a Jennings or Lawrence inside Morris on the left.

That Qld team would score at least 4 tries against anyone anytime. NSW look like the maximum they could score is 4. There's the problem.

Its time for a refresh for NSW. New coach, new selectors, new captain. The captain should be Luke Lewis, I don't know about the others. Maybe Ricky is the man. Do this, and things will turn- that was Qld's peak tonight, trust me.

Lengthy bans for Gallen, O'Donnell will rub salt into NSW wounds - Sydney Morning Herald

Lengthy bans for Gallen, O'Donnell will rub salt into NSW wounds
BRAD WALTER
June 17, 2010

FORWARDS Luke O'Donnell and Paul Gallen face lengthy suspensions after the Blues self-destructed last night to increase the pressure on coach Craig Bellamy and the NSW selectors following a record fifth consecutive series win by Queensland.

One of the worst NSW preparations in Origin history boiled over into an ill-disciplined performance that left the 52,452 fans at Suncorp Stadium and millions of television viewers wondering how O'Donnell was not sent off for a sickening 26th minute spear tackle on Darius Boyd.

After Queensland second-rower Sam Thaiday decided to mete out his own justice on O'Donnell and players from both sides rushed in to get involved, the NSW interchange forward headbutted Maroons prop Dave Taylor. Thaiday will also come under scrutiny for his role in starting the wild brawl, from which O'Donnell emerged bloodied and battered with his jersey torn.

Just three minutes earlier, Gallen had been put on report for a swinging arm tackle on Queensland forward Nate Myles and then bizarrely told referee Tony Archer as he pointed to a head cut from an earlier incident: ''I told you that I would get him back.''

Myles, who was already concussed from a previous incident, left the field soon after and did not return.

The Blues pair both have poor judiciary records and O'Donnell may be lucky to play again this season. But at least he and the other NSW players will still have the chance to push for inclusion in next year's Origin campaign - something Bellamy can almost certainly forget about after overseeing his third series defeat.

Bellamy, who is regarded as arguably the NRL's best coach, already holds the distinction of being the only NSW mentor to be re-appointed after back-to-back series losses but it is extremely unlikely he will survive again following the 34-6 drubbing.

After a lead up to the match in which the Blues named a 21-man squad, benched captain Kurt Gidley and had to endure the racism scandal that caused winger Timana Tahu to walk out of camp and assistant coach Andrew Johns to resign in disgrace, the Herald was told the opening 10 minutes would be ''hectic''.

Unfortunately, the tactic backfired and the Maroons dominated that period to lead 10-0 after just 13 minutes and the concerns about where the points would come from in a NSW team selected for its defensive capabilities only intensified for the Blues.

Questions were asked before the game about how Canberra's Joel Monaghan had been chosen from outside the original 21-man squad that contained five centres to replace Tahu. Monaghan was caught out in defence on a number of occasions as Greg Inglis and Boyd caused havoc on the Maroons left side.

Monaghan was paired with Origin rookie Beau Scott to stop Inglis - a task that proved beyond them.

Scott and Inglis came to blows on a number of occasions and the St George Illawarra centre was cautioned in the second half for punching his Queensland opposite.

Fellow Dragons centre Matt Cooper again failed to finish the match due to a hamstring injury that has him in doubt for Sunday's match against Cronulla and he may have made his last appearance in the Blues jersey.

Blues have no answers, says Meninga - NRL.COM

Blues have no answers, says Meninga
By Jim Morton
17 Jun 2010 00:02:41

A proud Mal Meninga declared NSW had no answers to the might of his Maroons after NSW's rough-house tactics backfired spectacularly at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

Queensland coach Meninga was incensed with the ugly tactics of Blues forwards Luke O'Donnell and Paul Gallen after NSW failed to win the war on two fronts in slipping to a fifth-straight State of Origin series loss.

Labelled the "Bruise Brothers", Gallen was cited for a high tackle on Nate Myles and O'Donnell is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines for a spear tackle on Darius Boyd which sparked a massive all-in brawl.

Both incidents occurred in the first half when NSW trailed 10-0 but it was the more composed Queensland who responded better.

With man-of-the-match Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston leading the way, the Maroons cut loose to score six tries to one in the 34-6 triumph.

O'Donnell escaped punishment for headbutting Sam Thaiday in the ugly 28th-minute brawl but faces a suspension of three weeks if he pleads guilty to the dangerous throw on winger Darius Boyd.

The Cowboys forward will cop a four-week ban if he fights the charge and fails.

Gallen is free to play Cronulla this weekend after taking the early guilty plea for his grade one high tackle on Nate Myles.

Meninga, who rated his side the best Queensland outfit in Origin history, said he wasn't surprised by the Blues borderline tactics.

"I hope the league deals with that," Meninga said.

"It wasn't very attractive for our game.

"What I worried about was our team getting through it.

"We expected that and handled it really well.

"They (NSW) had to do something, they had to so some sort of tactics to upset our rhythm and our key players in particular."

Lockyer said the Maroons prepared for such a testing assignment of their composure and toughness and their focus was highlighted by an immediate reply with a 31st minute try to Boyd for a 16-0 lead.

While besieged NSW coach Craig Bellamy praised an improved effort from the 28-24 loss in Sydney and five-eighth Trent Barrett predicted the tide would soon turn, Meninga said it proved the Blues had no answers.

He loudly laughed off Barrett's optimism.

"We're closer to a loss but please," he said with a wry chuckle. "It's been five years in a row now and the end has to come sometime.

"We're going to enjoy this now.

"It was a fantastic team effort right from the kick off and I couldn't be more proud of the players."

A veteran of 32 Origin games from the concept's inception in 1980, Meninga said the 2010 team was the best he'd been involved with.

"I think it's been a tough week for rugby league in general and a lot of things have happened and tomorrow should be about what a great team this is.

"Being in the box tonight it was one of those highlights you have when the team just does what you ask of them really well."

That was so painful to watch...

The only other thing I kept thinking was that I hope our boys, Gals and Baz, dont get injured/suspended.

Actually I did really love the new promo for the cricket though, pretty cool hey Zak?

O'Donnell in trouble after Origin brawl - Townsville Bulletin

O'Donnell in trouble after Origin brawl
JOSH ALSTON
June 17th, 2010

FIREBRAND Luke O'Donnell is staring down the barrel of another lengthy suspension following three apparent indiscretions in last night's volatile State of Origin decider.

Just minutes after being injected into the fray, the Cowboys lock was at the centre of an all-in brawl sparked by a spear tackle on Queensland winger Darius Boyd.

As the punches were thrown, O'Donnell emerged bloodied and with his jersey in tatters after both his head and fists flew at Rabbitohs forward David Taylor.

While referee Tony Archer put the incidents on report, no further action was taken. The judiciary might not be so kind.

In the last four years with the Cowboys, O'Donnell has only played 50 per cent of all games courtesy of a shocking record at the judiciary.

The 29-year-old was most recently rubbed out for three weeks for a grade-two dangerous contact charge on Tigers fullback Beau Ryan, made worse by a melee prior to the tackle and a spray on referee Gavin Badger.

His history - coupled with the nastiness of the tackle - means he is almost certain to be suspended again and is next to no chance of playing against the Storm on Saturday night.

Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston was not optimistic of lining up with him this weekend but hoped the penalties for the tackle gone wrong wouldn't rule him out long-term.

''He's built for Origin, isn't he?'' Thurston said. ''It looks like he'll have to face the judiciary. From the Cowboys' point of view, hopefully it's not too bad. But it doesn't look good.''

Shattered Blues coach Craig Bellamy was not willing to speculate on the severity of the likely sentence.

''That's up to (NRL match-review boss) Greg McCallum and his team,'' Bellamy said. ''I'll leave him to sort that out.''

O'Donnell is not the only Blue who will remember last night for all the wrong reasons, with Cronulla hardman Paul Gallen also in hot water.

Both were injected into the side for ''extra mongrel'', but it backfired horribly for New South Wales and means a rushed judiciary hearing is likely to include Gallen as well as O'Donnell.

Twenty-three minutes into the contest, the Cronulla enforcer rattled Nate Myles with a high shot, then drove his forearm into his head on the ground for good measure.

All the good it did was earn him a date with the judiciary while serving up a penalty in Queensland's favour.

Cooper Cronk would be an awesome signing. Apart from being a very good player for Melbourne, he is obviously now in Qlds future plans so he is gogint to keep improving.

No way Gallen should not be suspended for that tackle. Myles was already dizzy and if he didn't stay down it wouldn't have even been a penalty.

O'Donnell on the other hand is going to have a holiday.

The score and result aside (I'm a QLDer) I thought it was a good origin game. I like when there is a bit of biff and a bit of niggle. I think Origin is a more attractive game BECAUSE the referees let a bit more go.

****!

how long do you think gals will be out?

It was in the Telecrap that he's free to play against the Goons on Sunday.

I know I am biased but I thought Baz and Gal were NSW's two best players last night.

Baz,Gal,Pearce and Scott were the only ones who could hold their heads high.

The rest of the Blues were absolutely embarassing.

I was absolutely livid with Gal when he was placed on report because all I could think of after that was Sunday.

Thank goodness for us he's free to rip in to the Goons on Sunday.

UP UP CRONULLA!!!!
