If Carney winning the Dally M is relevant to us signing him then is not the fact that both the Raiders in 2008 and the Roosters this year both showed marked improvement after Carney had played his last games for them; Campese and Anasta each showcased career best form.

In Rd 10 of this year having lost five and three games either side of our victory against the Roosters a team containing Carney was unable to pose a threat to our defence.

Kelly missed fifteen games, Townsend debuted mid-season, Gardner had an injury interrupted year; there's massive amount of upswing.

We don't need a short-term fix.

when did he prove that?

i dont remember one game him winning it for us....

but i do remember 2 games he played in when we had a **** load more possesion, field position and attacking opportunities, and still lost

You can't have good field position without a good long kicker and i don't think he is the one who comes up with the attacking plays at training ... Why is it a good idea to bring in some bloke who's name has been dragged through the dirt ahead of a young bloke with wraps on him all over his career and his only desire is to play for the sharks. I would rather Chad whose heart is with the sharks than Carney who has already had too many chances. If it means a short term top 8 over a long term strong halves combination then so be it for me.

I'm sure he will. But in any event you are entitled to your opinion and I am to entitiled to mine. I don't really think either matter as I doubt the recruitment staff will come in and base their decision to sign him or not based off what we have said...

my 2 cents is to sign him i'd love to see him in a sharks jersey if he stuffs up again thats him done for good no one would consider touching him but while the opportunity is their i'd rather the sharks reap the rewards than another club.

Just out of curiosity to those saying no to carney would you say no to bird aswell?
I would have em both.

Carney and Bird in the same team?

That'd be like having the Walters brothers ... except stronger, uglier, faster and stupider ....

yep I think it'd work ....

i saw nothing in Chad Townsend to say he will be any more solid than josh mccrone
i hope he proves me wrong

For me the jury is still out on Chad, yes he has the ability to play first grade whether that be at the Sharks or another club but as much as I want him to be a gun or rep half I cant see it, yet.

Maybe these other guys on this forum wetting themself about him can forsee talent better than me but he has a heap of hype about him which I cant see him justifying, yet, BUT surely he is going to be better than Josh McCrone, that guy is at best ordinary.

Definitely stuck on this one. So many pro's and cons... obviously he's a ******** and will likely bring bad attention to the club, at least when he signs anyway. On the other hand, he does have the element of class that we have missed for so long in the halves - sure Kelly is showing glimpses of this but who knows if he will ever be anywhere near as good as Carney could be. At the moment we have 3 young, talented halves... but it's too early to tell if they will cement a spot and become a genuine 1st grade player - Graham is the exception but he is definitely more suited to lock.

I think a fit Carney would bring the team to another level, and I think that a competitive and successful Cronulla would bring more positive impact than Carney stuffing up again would bring negative. I don't think Townsend is ready yet, I've kept an eye on him for years now and I still think he needs a little more time - hopefully he can become the player we all want him to be. Carney is a rep half and could probably teach him, AK and Graham a lot, seeing as we have no halves coach anyway.

In the end for me, if Gallen wants him - Gallen he has sacrificed so much for the team - then we should at least think about it. I vote yes

That part in bold makes you say sign him, there are so many pro's & con's but you feel for Gal, how many guys in the history of the game can claim to be one of the best players in the world yet play for a team near the bottom, hats off to Gal for sticking w/ us.

While I say no to Carney, I don't necessarily agree with this. Other than a few games (Raiders, Dragons, Broncos v2) the feature of our losses was:

1. Poor 5th tackle options
2. Poor kick in the opponent's 20m (good option - bad execution)
3. Lack of quality ball to outside backs

A good half or 5/8 would have been the difference in some of our close losses.

Having said that, our halves are all under 21, so I'm inclined to give them a bit more time to get it right. Not many players come into first grade in the halves and get it right all the time. Consistency is the biggest challenge, and our three young halves have all had problems with it - but so does any 20 year old first grader.

while i kind of agree with you, in some regard i don't.
Poor kicks, yes that is the onus of the halves.

Lack of quality ball to the backs: some blame on the halves yes, other blame on the edge running forwards and also on the centers themselves who've many times been in the worst place to receive passes.

Fifth tackle options again, i can't place the onus entirely on the halves. When you've got 13 blokes standing in a straight line across the field, there aren't many options. When we've attacked on the fifth with a good shape, we've seen devistating results. Maybe the halves should be fetching up the lazy other players, i'm not sure, but apart from poor bombs to the corner and a lack of grubbers, i wouldn't blame the fifth tackle issue ENTIRELY on the halves.

I think AK will change that, he plays what's in front of him.

i dont think its at all an unfair question ,whether bird did ( i believe and almost everyone else does too ) or did not hit his girl friend or glassed her either way he brought cronulla real bad press and lied to the club about it and tried blaming it on a mate.

I know he was found not guilty but in a sense i guess i can see where on part of what you are saying is true and that is the apples to figs cause to me hitting a woman is by far worse than getting drunk.

by the way bird being found not guilty seriously come on if he wasnt a footy player and just regular joe like you and me do you think this would have been the outcome ?

I would hate to see us miss out on a bloody good opportunity but as i said its a risk and a huge one at that.

I agree with willyinport, a no for Carney is not necessarily a no for Bird. I think there is one simple reason - why would they want to come here?

Bird - if he comes back it will be becasue he feels he owes us and he wants another chance to play with Gal and be a leader in our young squad.

Carney - because he is running out of clubs and Cronulla jsut happen to give him the better deal of the 2 clubs that want him.

Also, a few people mention that he is a ****head - do we really want a player like that in our team? Will we love him as much as Gal, AK or anyone else?
