If they go ahead with it we'll have no choice eventually. It would mean the end of funding for the likes of Shark Park, Leichhardt etc. Won't take long before those grounds are falling apart.

you or anyone else know how much outside funding we get as say a % of how much we contribute ourselves from our own funds? i.e. could we keep it running ourselves with no help ?

Nah dunno mate but I highly doubt we'd have the appetite to maintain it completely at our own expense moving forward.

i dont see how paying rent to a council will benefit us

To elaborate on this further, and to use ANZ as an example. I don't know how the current situation is but this was certainly how it was.

ANZ pays clubs to play there. With a guaranteed amount per game, plus a share of ticket sales if there's a larger crowd. Potentially negotiated in advance, for instance a local derby.

I can see the NSW Government and NRL being pretty keen to fill these new stadiums. Offering clubs an incentive to play there, either full time or n number of games there especially for clubs not that keen seems a possible scenario.

Let's say operational costs to host a game at Shark park is $70k (just pulling a number out of my ass)

Ticket sales (30k), Merchandise (10k), Corporate (20k) and Signage (20k) gets us $80k (again all numbers from my ass) then we've made $10k for that game.

If Kogarah looking all shiny and new comes along and says we'll guarantee you $80k per game, they'll keep ticket sales and probably signage. So we still get Merchandise (10k) and Corporate (40k) - I'm increasing this number because we can probably charge more at the new venue. Then we make $130k a game.

That's a improvement of $120k a game to play up the road in new suburban ground. And we can play Finals footy there. This is what I mean by being financially viable.

Game day revenue for the Leagues club will go down, even with game day buses, but I'd say they're banking on revenue for the Leagues club once renovated on the other 352 days to be their cash cow.

That doesn't even bring in what they could do with the stadium land.

I want to be clear, I'm not for this, just how the club might be looking at it financially. I want to keep playing out of Shark Park. Just don't see where money for upgrades come from. Or even money for the Centre of Excellence, last i heard was that we had a dollar for dollar guarantee for the government but need to pony up a fair, think it was around 10m ?

I know you made all your numbers up but if you could turn barely more than breaking even into 1.5 mil profit per season by moving home games you'd have to very seriously look at it

Ideally I don't want Sharks to go anywhere either, and I've only been to one home game (I'm a bad fan...)

Cronulla Sharks bold proposal to share ownership of revamped Shark Park with the NRL

The Cronulla Sharks are determined not to miss out on the state government’s plans to fund new stadiums — and have offered the NRL a joint-venture opportunity potentially worth millions.

The Cronulla Sharks have offered the NRL a joint-venture opportunity potentially worth tens of millions of dollars in a unique partnership to build a “mini-Bankwest” stadium at Shark Park.

The Sharks would provide the land, the NRL would lobby the government for funding and in return they would get a shareholding that would become the cash-strapped code’s first major asset.
Sharks chief executive Dino Mezzatesta is soon to put the proposal to independent commission chairman Peter V’landys and the state government as an alternative to building a $200 million facility at Kogarah that would be used only six times a year by St George Illawarra. It would then go to Sharks members for final approval.

“We will never leave Shark Park,” Mezzatesta said. “And we believe this is a huge opportunity for not just the Sharks but for the entire game to have an asset with commercial opportunities.”
State treasurer Dominic Perrottet is soon to announce government funding for four new suburban grounds in Sydney in return for a 25-year commitment from the NRL to keep grand finals in the Harbour City.
Kogarah Oval has been earmarked for the first project followed by Liverpool, Brookvale and Penrith. The NRL wants the Sharks to quit their traditional home ground to share Kogarah with the Dragons.
“That won’t be happening,” Mezzatesta said. “I’ve spoken to the NRL about our plans and they have no authority over where our games are played. They can’t tell us to move.
“We have an obligation to our members and fans to keep games at Shark Park.”

The Kogarah plan is a shock in that St George Illawarra already has Wollongong and won’t leave.
“I don’t want to sound disrespectful but our case and is far more appealing than either Brookvale or Kogarah,” Mezzatesta said. “There is huge revenue opportunities for the game from a facility like this. This is a long-term investment for the game.
“We get the a state-of-the-art facility and the NRL shares in the commercial opportunities
“If the NRL is successful in achieving funds for stadia, it’s something we’d talk to them about. We would explore them having part-ownership. Or even the state sharing ownership.
“We’d make it worthwhile for the NRL and the community.”
A new boutique stadium in the Shire would sit alongside the $400 million redevelopment that includes a hotel and an 18,000 sqm precinct for shopping and dining.

“In an area like this, why would you have no rugby league content here,” Mezzatesta said.
There would be a plan to build a southern Sydney rugby league academy as part of the project, similar to the Penrith Panthers.
Cronulla has the third-biggest junior rugby league nursery behind only the Penrith Panthers and the Parramatta Eels with more than 500 junior participants.
“We have 12,000 OzTag participants, 4000 touch footballers and the largest number soccer registrations in the country,” Mezzatesta said, “If you’re looking for multipurpose use, we’re hard to beat. There’s also an opportunity for Southern Districts rugby union.
“The commercial opportunities for the venue and the NRL as a stakeholder are enormous.”

Good on us for trying but it will never happen. It just isn't a good location geographically.

May as well throw our hat in the ring and see what NRL can come up with.

Ballsy move. Only problem is if the NRL rejects it, it means they have zero issues with us folding or relocating

From the NRL's perspective how would it be better?

We will have to at some stage unless we can fund the ground ourselves.
Joint ownership of an asset and opportunities to reap rewards ?

Kogarah has one team that plays there six times a year, and should probably be putting more emphasis on the Illawarra, not less.

Valandys a good businessman with government connections . If he can see a win / win it could happen .Really happy the club has throw its hat into the ring , otherwise Shark Park could become a white elephant

This is the good thing about V’landys from our point of view, he doesn’t have any super league baggage or club bias, and he doesn’t appear to listen too closely to anyone who does. He’ll simply do what’s best for the code, and Cronulla are a far better investment than the dragons who IMO would be better off just being an Illawarra team.

Ignoring who plays where and just looking at location having a mini bankwest adjacent to the development seems a no brainer also

Decent restaurants
Modern leagues club
Hotel
Corporate event facilities
More parking

Even if we kept alcohol sales Only ( minimum 18 games with at least $20000 income each game ) and let NRL own , maintain and collect ticket and food catering we'd be miles ahead and likely to guarantee our future as a permanent NRL Club
