From Fox Sports (Hooper)

"No, it’s not Groundhog Day at the Cronulla Sharks. But here we are talking about the possible return of suspended head coach Shane Flanagan. Again.
We’ve said it before and we’ll reiterate it once more, the chances of the Sharks rolling out the red carpet for the return of Flanagan as head coach in 2022 are 100/1 and drifting.

The annual push for Flanagan to have his NRL head coaching ban reduced has been in full swing this week as the coach who ended the Sharks 50-year premiership drought ramps up the charm offensive for a return to the NRL.

We’ve heard Sharks powerbroker Steve Mace has given Flanagan a both barrels spray about driving the PR campaign.

We’ve also heard Mace personally telephoned current Sharks coach John Morris to tell “Bomber” the reports are way off.

This year will mark the third season Flanagan has been banned from holding a head coaching position in the NRL.

For all the accolades he’s earned for helping the Sharks turn the premiership porch lights off, there’s an argument he’s created just as many problems.

From the peptides to the salary cap punishments, it’s not great reading.

The NRL is still in possession of a list of suspicious payments outside of the Sharks salary cap which was personally sent to Flanagan’s work email.

Some of them were from 2016 – the year the Sharks beat Melbourne in the decider – but the NRL has ruled Cronulla was “salary cap compliant” on grand final day.

Even if Flanagan does decide to go down the road of lodging the paperwork to try and have his ban reduced the best he can expect is a couple of months shaved off. Maybe.

What Flanagan does enjoy is some seriously high profile support with the likes of Prime Minister Scott Morrison, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and media king pin Alan Jones all strongly pushing his case.

The most pressing question is which NRL club will be prepared to give him another crack?"

So you could say Flanno has Alan Jones behind him

To the point I've bolded SJ signed December 2018, there were fullbacks like Papenhuyzen (Drinkwater injured March 2019 before that Pap was considered their 3rd choice) and CNK (signed raiders Feb 2019) who we could have got for less money.
So in 2019 in theoretical Christmas land if Flanno doesn't sign SJ (as a response to losing our fullback) we could have signed Pap and kept Moylan in the halves where he has just started playing quite well (and so he doesn't get broken) and still have extra money to spend elsewhere.
SJ was good for us for a a decent amount of his first year and probably 80% of last year (thanks to more time with Bomber?) but there were some pretty big other moves that could have been made in theoretical land that will keep me from giving Flanno too much credit for the last two years of finals.

Onto the second point, to start with Morris seems a lot more charismatic to meet with than quite a few other coaches but the main thing is I'm not saying Bomber is the drawcard (to some he may be), I'm just saying most players would presumably see not knowing who their coach is going to be as a negative. Certainly one they can look past for better money and/or other positives though.

i'm not giving flanno any credit for the last 2 seasons - that's Morris . he did the best he could with the hand he was dealt and still managed to get us to the finals twice but SJ carried us from half way through 2019 onwards. he was garbage prior for us

and lets not kid ourselves even in 2018 Moylans 'good year' he was still a mong and was going to break down at some point even if he was kept in the halves

So you could say Flanno has Alan Jones behind him

give him another crack - hehehehe

I meant this year plus two more. Which makes three.

barney the dinosaur has taught you well

FLanno Vanquished, but Bellamy the Cleanskin Saviour??

He aint no cleanskin, perhaps the grubbiest of all!
Although largely swept under the rug due to being (supposedly) of no fault for systematic teamwide cheating to a level the NRL has never seen before or since.
Importantly he hasn't (that we know of) ****ed up more after being caught and also didn't **** up for us.

Wonder if the NRL would be more lenient on us with Belly here, or if they'd just see him as a Shark. I think he'd only come here if he still carried their favour. And maybe that works better for us, having him help 'clean up' the club (which i'm sure is wht the NRL sees us needing).

That could sway his decision about where to go, to. He'd be well looked after by the QRL and NRL in general in a QLD team, so it'd be much closer to his setup at the Storm

Bronocs makes sense given fam in Qld but it's kinda the copout option.
They are at the bottom at the moment, it would almost be impossible not to improve them (unless obviously they made a huge leap forward this season).
Nobody would be impressed for Bellamy to bring them back into a powerful club, most probably assume it will happen eventually regardless. A lot of their future fortunes could be decided this season anyway - which of the young guys steps up and what happens with Milf.

Storm are on top so all he can do there is try and keep them on top. As far proving himself in another area goes this would really just feel like more of the same. It would be almost impossible he could make a significant positive impact in a slightly different role with them.
Feels like it would be kind of a weird relationship between him and coach also, unless there was only like 1 season crossover. Like imagine Ryles comes in and Bellamy is like "alright Jason, you're the boss now... also I am still your boss"

Despite having a great run of making finals and a premiership not long ago most in the NRL are just waiting for us to slip back down into obscurity. We could actually be a more exciting project for him. We have a solid base of young players, what can he build here?

long term to keep us on the straight and narrow in the eyes of the NRL perhaps - but what isn't clean about our club right now as it stands? i know it takes time to repair past damage and a history of bad reputation but right now we are without scandal for once and have a young and likable coach at the helm and board members and a CEO that arn't embarrassing themselves and some sponsors + new facilities on the way. even without Bellamy we are in a decent position and alot better than most clubs

If NRL wanted us gone it would have happened by now and Vlandys has stated he has not intention to shut out a club unless they volunteer to move. what is there for them to be lenient about ?

If Cam Smith leaves and they have a new coach that will be a challenge in itself to keep them at the top of the comp but can't blame the guy for wanting some new scenery . agree we would be an exciting prospect. we look to be on the up as an organisation but even so he could deliver some quick and big wins here opposed to storm / brissy on the corporate and coaching side which are already well run and resourced organisations (ok maybe not broncs of late) but if someone even more experienced and more revered in brisbane in the form of wayne bennet got the push out the door and all the politics going on there right now maybe it makes him think twice

Him helping us getting a second premiership and turning us into a true force again will be more impressive than another Storm GF although taking brissy from the bottom back to where they should be would look favorable on him as well

Shane Flanagan says “love from Baz and the Bulldogs” has helped son Kyle over the “hurt” from his shock axing at the Sydney Roosters and primed to relaunch his NRL career under Trent Barrett at Canterbury.
For the first time in his career, Flanagan will be the chief playmaker when he partners Brandon Wakeham in the halves against Newcastle on Friday night.

But while Flanagan concedes “deep down” Kyle will be playing with a point to prove, his dad has also warned him not to go out and “play with that anger”.

Flanagan also revealed how Barrett had helped Kyle recover from the humiliation that followed his controversial exit from Bondi, saying: “It was good for Kyle to feel that he was wanted again.”

Of the departure from the Roosters, Flanagan recalled how the initial disappointment of getting dropped during last season still didn’t prepare Kyle for Trent Robinson’s brutal post season review.

Flanagan maintains he had no inclination of what might be coming given there had been little warning from previous conversations with either Robinson or halves coach Cooper Cronk.

“It did affect him,” Flanagan said.

“It definitely hurt. It took two or three weeks for him to get over it.

“It was a bumpy road but he is a really tough and resilient kid.

“Obviously it is going to make him stronger.

“He understands that footy is a business and as a halfback in the NRL he has to get the job done.”

And Shane reckons it might also be the making of Kyle in years to come.

“100 per cent,” Flanagan said. “He could be at the Bulldogs for another six or seven years and he could stay there his whole career.

“And that is what he might have needed. We are not quite sure. But he is definitely over it.

“It was two or three weeks but once he signed with the Bulldogs there was a lot of love from Baz and the Bulldogs.

“I think he just sort of said, ‘Righto, I want to prove everyone wrong’ and he got on with his training.”

Asked if he thinks Kyle will play with a point to prove on Friday night, Flanagan added: “Probably deep down.

“But it is hard to go out and play with that anger.

“You have to go out with a clear head and treat every game as it is.

“Obviously when they play the Roosters (in round 17) I am sure he will have a spring in his step and have a bit more motivation.

“But for the Bulldogs, Trent (Barrett) has given him a real big responsibility and has trusted him.

“And the team revolves a fair bit around (Kyle), so he has got a big job there.

“He can’t be worrying about all that other peripheral stuff, like last year and what people are saying.

“He just has to concentrate on his job.”

Flanagan says Barrett has had a wonderful influence.

Barrett had an outstanding relationship with his players at Manly and was also given huge credit when attack coach at Penrith last year.

“I don’t know how to put it but he doesn’t remove himself,” Flanagan explained of Barrett’s ability to win players’ trust.

“It is not the playing group and the coaching staff. Trent is part of them … he involves himself in it.

“I think that leads to a lot of things.

“The players trust him and talk to him because it is not just ‘do this, do that’.

“He actually cares about him.”

Flanagan says he can’t wait to jump in the car and hit the M1 north to Newcastle to watch the game live.

“He has handled himself really well the whole time,” he said of Kyle.

“There has been different situations where people have tried to have cracks at him from the sidelines.

“There has been times on the field where they have ruffed him up.

“But he just gets on with it.

“He has been around footy all his life. He understands what the role of a halfback is.”
