At the moment the club is missing a major sponsor, as we all know finding companies willing to pull down $6 million for 5 years isn't easy to do. Which posing the question, what if Barry finds one who wishes to impose the requirement that the sharks most play one or two games a year in their home country. Example China or the US. What are the members feelings on this requirement?

The members would happily accept it, considering the clause. You know, the clause where active contributors of ideas (such as the SharksForever forum specifically) are given return flights to said games, provided box seats, refreshments and accommodation for several nights. In the scheme of things it's a small investment, but creates great sentiment and engagement levels for word of mouth marketing and fan base growth.

(Got us covered, lads!)

This is a scam folks - Rebecca Wilson hacked both Flanno's and the club's email accounts before she croaked it.

Exactly. The NFL this year played a number of regular season games in London.

The NFL is a sllightly different beast to the NRL.

Complete and utter waste of time taking games to China.

Stick to the pacific islands.

Remember John Ribot's vision? It's a niche sport, people need to accept that.

This is what gives me the ****s. You can wank on about how journos just have a job to do. BUT:

This is the headline - "Cronulla threatens legal fight with NRL"

The article under that headline has no mention of a "legal fight":

Cronulla has announced it will appeal the $800,000 fine handed down by the NRL on Wednesday.

Chief executive Barry Russell said the club will review the evidence compiled by the NRL integrity unit before responding to the breach notice surrounding its dealings with now-deregistered coach Shane Flanagan.

While the club is determined to reduce the impact of the NRL’s financial punishment, they will not take any action on Flanagan’s behalf.

Russell said it is up to Flanagan to decide if he will challenge the preliminary findings of an NRL integrity unit investigation — which saw the premiership winning coach issued a breach notice for breaching the terms of his 2014 suspension. The NRL claims it uncovered a series of emails which show Flanagan had regular contact with club officials throughout his suspension.

Russell’s revelation that the Sharks will seek to have the size of the fine reduced came as the club also announced it will field co-coaches in 2019 following Flanagan’s breach notice.

Cronulla have installed assistants John Morris and Jim Dymock as their caretaker NRL coaches after the provisional deregistration of Flanagan.

“I’ve got confidence in them for the time being,” captain Paul Gallen said of the assistant coaches on Wednesday.

Gallen said the club has survived much worse scandals than the one the club now finds itself in.

“I’ve seen this before,” Gallen said.

“It’s not good. It’s a distraction but at times like these you find out a lot about people. Who’s with you, who’s not.

“I’ve said it before about this club, it’s the most resilient room in Australian sport. We’ve faced going broke half a dozen times, we’ve been through scandals, a lot of which have been our own fault, but we’re still here fighting and we will continue to be.

“Even when we’re struggling in years gone by we’ve still been a team that other team’s don’t want to play.

“No matter how many times we’re kicked when we’re down, we keep getting back up again.”

Flanagan and the club have until the end of January to respond to a breach notice, which is when the NRL will make its final determination.

Until then Flanagan cannot have any official involvement with the club. To avoid punishment it appears the Sharks will have to successfully counter evidence found by the NRL integrity unit that more than 50 emails were sent by Flanagan concerning retention and recruitment.

His first correspondence was sent just weeks after his suspension and continued all the way to September 2014.

The club is believed to have initiated most of the discussions, resulting in the extra $400,000 fine.

No other Cronulla officials have been punished because then-CEO Steve Noyce and then-football manager Darren Mooney are no longer NRL officials.

The whole saga began when Russell self reported an improperly disclosed payment of around $50,000 made to a player in 2015.

Despite Cronulla throwing themselves open to an NRL investigation and ultimately being hit with the full force of the independent commission’s powers, Russell said he does not regret coming forward.

Cronulla 'can win the premiership next year'

Paul Gallen declared Cronulla ‘‘the most resilient brand in Australian sport’’. Chief executive Barry Russell firmly believes the Sharks can win the premiership next year.

As rival fans took to social media to call for Cronulla to finally be relocated following their latest indiscretion, the two most important men entrusted with guiding the Shire club forward were full of optimism about the immediate future.
Had Russell not picked up the phone and contacted the NRL about an apparent salary cap discrepancy, it would never have led to the investigation that ultimately cost coach Shane Flanagan his job and the Sharks an $800,000 fine.

Flanagan has been hit hard by the second ban with his wellbeing a priority for the Sharks.

Russell said he would happily self-report any financial discrepancies again if in a similar situation. ‘‘I had to self-report, and if you haven’t got integrity you haven’t got anything,’’ Russell said yesterday. ‘‘I would do the same thing again. If you’ve done the

wrong thing, you have to suffer the consequences. Nobody is bigger than the game or the club. I want to make this club, and with everyone here, our staff, members and fans, a club everyone is proud of.’’

Gallen, 37, has seen it all unfold at Cronulla since 2001, including the peptides scandal, and knows better than anyone how the little club that continually punches above its weight on the field reacts to adversity.

‘‘I’ve seen this [scandal] before,’’ Gallen said. ‘‘It’s not good, it’s a distraction, but times like these you find out a lot about people – who’s with you, who’s not – and I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again about this club, it’s the most resilient brand in Australian sport.

‘‘We’ve faced going broke half a dozen times, we’ve been through scandals, a lot of them our own fault, but we’re still here fighting. And we’ll continue to fight.’’

Russell said he would challenge the NRL’s proposed $800,000 fine because the club had self-reported the latest financial concerns. The Sharks are bracing for a $4 million loss this year, but Russell said the club would still be able to cover the fine if it was not reduced.

Cronulla remain without a major sponsor for the front of their jerseys, which would conservatively fetch about $1 million a season, and Russell at one stage broke into a sales pitch at a packed press conference.

‘‘It’s an ideal opportunity for a major sponsor to get on board and be part of an exciting new future at this club, because we ain’t looking back; this stuff is finished, I’m finished with it,’’ Russell said. ‘‘We are going forward, together. Look at these boys [behind me], look at the squad we’ve got. We can win the premiership next year, I firmly believe that. This is a speed hump – it’s a fairly decent one – but we’ll get over with it.’’

NRL boss Todd Greenberg said he had no intention to relocate the Sharks, who have often struggled financially and attracted plenty of negative headlines, including Andrew Fifita’s on-field show of support for one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge, Todd Carney’s ‘‘bubbler’’ and Ben Barba and Damien Keogh’s cocaine bans.

The Sharks’ woes would not have been lost on the franchises sweating on an opportunity to join the NRL.

‘‘They are unbelievably important, incredibly important [to the NRL],’’ Greenberg said of Cronulla. ‘‘We want all 16 teams operating at their best capacity. That’s why the funding deal done with clubs ensures they’re better placed than ever before. Nothing would give me more pleasure than having 16 strong sustainable clubs who are well led, well managed and well governed: that’s the goal.’’

When pressed on Cronulla staying in Sydney, Greenberg said: ‘‘We would love to see Cronulla thriving in the Shire. We want them to be their very best self.’’

Russell said Flanagan, who delivered the club its only NRL title, and was waiting to be offered a contract extension beyond next season, was ‘‘extremely upset and disappointed’’.

So Flanno’s gone and that’s a shame
But who is really the one to blame?
Bazza reported and the issues grew
Flanno made contact didn’t have a clue

The fans are divided on who is the villain
And the newspaper hacks are making a killin’
The stories they write are chapters of fiction
And diatribe full of gossip and bitchin

Buzz is smilin’ he got his big story
And has covered himself in a blaze of glory
Hooper the fwit with the world’s worse smirk
Thinks he’s a hero but he’s just one big jerk

But has the punishment fitted the crime?
Others have done worse but didn’t get the same time
The beaters and bashers and blowers and crooks
Got slaps on the wrist, what a bunch of sooks

But perhaps we must realise that Flanno did wrong
Though he did win us a comp, had us singing the song
And while it’s now obvious he’d not had a clue
It’s time to move on - support the Black White and Blue!

If this sort of stuff happens again with other clubs, I know I'll be waiting to see if they do the same penalty or not nearly as bad.

Yeh I agree. Did they go through all the servers and Emails at Brisbane or with Craig Bellamy at Melb? Still got me beat how Bellamy had no idea about there massive cheating.

In saying all that what a dumb and unnecessary thing both Flanno and our old management did.

Print outs of emails feels pretty conclusive, I suppose they didn't need to wait... plus they must have been gagging to kick him out after all the trouble he's caused.

Yeh and I think the NRL had to bring a distraction away from all the violence against crimes and media attention etc

This was a quick way of showing everyone how 'strong' the NRL leaders are.

it is finished, just hasnt been announced as this is a far bigger issue plus we have a right of reply before it goes public

people need to stop aiming their anger at barry, just look at the tigers, if you dont report, you get caught and your punishment is way more severe
