Bizarre they put Toby in the 13.

We saw the benefit of Finucane's passing game in the trial. No doubt they'll play him there until McInnes is fit.
I don’t think the jersey number matters with Finucane. Put whatever number you like on him. He’s still making those passes.

Im really not excited to see Tolman in round 1 team lists. I understand why we retained him, but I’d rather see him in dire emergency situations.
Not excited by blokes who have a high work rate while rarely missing tackles?

Not sure if Hazelton is in top squad or if injured during trials but I think the last two years he’s been knocking down the door and I think against an aggressive raiders pack he offers a lot more.
Hazelton doesn't currently have an NRL contract. He was signed by with the Jets with a pre-season train and trial for NRL.

Should just play the more dynamic/exciting/heart in mouth guys

Sure we are more likely to lose, but the rarer wins will be better and the losses more frustrating!

Any info on how Hazletons tnt is going? Looked pretty bloody impressive in the trials. Surprised no one has picked him up

I’d like us to take a risk on this guy.
I think he could be that “under the radar” workhorse that just “does his job very well”.

Don’t think it will be this season but can see him in NRL
One maybe both of him and Calhoon might come up into NRL depth once we shed a few forwards for next year

Is anyone? That was kinda my point too. I understand why he has been signed, he is stable and reliable. But we have that now with Finucane who also offers a lot more. I also think he lacks impact, which is an issue with our attack - he doesn't dint defence lines, and I could be wrong, but I don't remember him getting fast PTBs.

I won't be surprised if he is picked with McInnes and Wade out - but as I said, he doesn't put any lead in my pencil.

plenty of other ways to have an impact, like ball playing. That Hynes/Nikora try was all Finucane IMO. Finucane was able to get his decoy runner to commit certain defenders leaving the space out the back for the boys to do their play.

You need a mix. Sharks have a whole bunch on high-impact ball runners, but they are also high-risk. We've seen BHU, Rudolf, Williams and Talakai all get exposed in defence late in games/halves, and Hunt in his brief NRL experience has been a 30-40 minute player. Impact is great, but you also need some guys who can pass the ball, and who will make that 78th minute tackle instead of throwing out an arm.

Tolman's ptb's are actually decent btw. From last season Williams is the best by far, then Rudolf. I'd have Tolman third. Not sure how Finucane compares.

Yep... totally see your point.

I guess I am also hoping for Fitz to have cleaned up some of the deficiencies within the younger forward's defence. If he can make them more reliable than a player like Tolman won't be required.

Yeah - hopefully. I think Hunt has some improvement in him too.

Just need to keep the minutes down for those other blokes imo. For me that means no Ikuvalu on the bench. Talakai covers centre in a pinch.

In a fully healthy squad I think Tolman is a great #18. I don’t think we’ll see a healthy squad often though, so I reckon Tolman will play plenty.

Because we want 13 on the field and 4 on the bench but only signed one Finucane.

But remember...
If Tolman makes the 17 for any game , we must be in DIRE straights in 2022 with injury

I'm a Tolman fan but yes believe it or not it doesn't excite me that much to see him selected either. But it is what he is here for in terms of depth (Jack williams is out, Pele, mcinnes ect) and his minutes and defensive workload help a higher impact forward stay fresher.

Tolman isn't going to really help us win a game in attack with the ball but his defense can help us stay in a game though Tolman can't make the tackles for everyone around him so they need to step up as well.

Tolman isn't really gunna get better as a player from here on out (bonus if he did) so we need him to maintain his current fitness and performance level and at least not regress. His biggest limitation is the lack of impact in his runs / hit ups

The sooner the high impact forwards burgess mention can get their endurance, fitness, defensive workrates ect up (if they can/do that is or if it's even in the plans) the less relevant and required a Tolman type player will become to our squad. Even so he would remain reliable low risk depth

I don't mind having Tolman there in the team to do the grunt work.

I wonder though, how long has it been since he scored a try?

Edit: Actually it wasn't that long ago!

In 2021 round 16, Tolman scored his first try for Cronulla-Sutherland during a 26-18 upset loss to the Brisbane Broncos.
