I think Gal is still playing injured and is no where near ready to go .. I guess a few days in Hospital and breaking a rib or 2 will do that for you. I think Gal plays this way because he put his hand up when no one else did .. it'd be hard to just change a game that internationally recognised as pretty awesome that past few seasons. League has changed .. gone are the Gavin Miller days of a ball playing back rower (God I miss that) - did we have first class halves back then? no but they were solid and did a fantastic job .. the game has moved on and we now have a player in Carney that can change our approach to attacking football ... I think we have shown against 2 top rated sides that we can now match them in attacking flair - we certainly created enough line breaks and opportunities in the first 2 weeks then we did for most of last season .. if we made better choices or caught the ****ing ball we wouldn't really be discussing this today.

love this thread about time this was really brought up, he is a black hole, one play there he pushed Carney out of 1st receiver and then proceeded throw and interpect back on the inside and blow up at Gards. Had an absolute gutfull of him but Flanno is the one to blame, he had his chance when he dominated origin last year at prop to tell Gal that he is the best prop in the world and he should just stay tight work his *** off and play 80 and he would be a player that no other club can match.

Instead he has way too much to say, kills every attacking option and cannot accept that this is TODD CARNEY'S TEAM, Carney was playing 3 in on the right side only yesterday and twice I saw him get a ball on a sweeping fullback style run, once of Gal and once off J Smith. Carney has to be the boss on the field end of story or Sharks won't be winning anything.

Lets get real about this. Our problems during the game were not in the forwards. It was in our finishing. Our halves did not work together as a unit. Flanno needs to move Graham to lock, Gallen and Smith at second row, Gibbs, GeGois and Ross up front. Carney needs to be shifted to 5/8 and either bring an attacking/controlling half back such as Townsend, Kelly or Robson in at No 7. Our backline is **** house so until we get some help there, give us a halves conbination that can feed some good early ball.

Yes, this is spot on!
Mainly the experienced Robson brought in, Carney to 5/8 and Gal to the 2nd row to play on an edge.

The best Gallen can hope to be is a short mans Sam Burgess, at the moment he is a broke/ desperate man's Glenn Stewart who wants to play 7.

Sorry are we talking about our team and state captain and Harry Sunderland medal winner or a guy that ran for 42 metres and is on 400 grand?

they are both sharks players..

btw, the stuff about Gallen is absolutely wrong IMO but lets not get hypocritical when it comes to which players we can critque and which ones you say we can't.

gallen only came into the game and tried to control things when he realised his team were flat as a tack and he tried to lift them... thats what a captain does

Tough topic to comment on. Firstly I think the bloke is the best player in the NRL fullstop. I agree that this metre eater roll he has adopted is forced atleast in part to others being unwilling to put their hand up. I believe it's Flanno's role to decide whats best, if this is the way Gal wants to play move him into the front row. I'm personally not yet sold on that idea because he was so damn effective on the fringes when he worked with Birdy. We have decent 2nd rowers so I can't really work out what has changed so much.

As hard as it may be, Flanno needs to make some tough decisions or kiss his coaching career goodbye.

Moving Graham to lock & Gal to second row or prop is a must as they both are currently playing in their wrong positions (as is Carney).

I remember an interview Gallen had about playing in the front row and he said that will come when he's at the back end of his career.
I love Gallen as much as the next Sharks supporter but how can he think that when its a team sport? Shouldn't he be saying that he'll play anywhere the team needs him to play?

Gallen is the hardest working forward in the game bar none. Sometimes in attack he does get too involved and think he is a benji Marshall or something, yes. But this guy is the first one picked for state, Australia and the all stars game for a reason, we would lose so much without him. I personally think he should watch how petero plays. Nothing fancy, run it straight and hard, tackle and repeat with the occasional rap around play. I agree his inside balls are that obvious the defense is already waiting to slaughter poor gards. There are some critical people on here that's for sure. Maybe gallen sees what we all see? No attack, no direction.. So he tries to do everything and in return helps less in attacking plays. Who knows. But at the end of the day he is a machine and I wouldn't swap any other forward for gallen

Only, he is better than both of those players.
Better in what way? He is an inferior ball player by far to Glenn Stewart (2 premierships), (In advanced stats USAGE i.e the number of plays run through a player as a percentage of total plays details this best, Gallen's red zone usage to tries/ try assists/ repeat sets is laughable, part of that is due to the quality around him no doubt but that doesn't excuse the enough nor does it allow for what happened on the weekend), my preference in a lock is someone who can create for others, Stewart >13. At his best at 8 he is an 80 minute work horse who will put up ridiculous numbers but won't offer the ability to create space the way Burgess can simply because Burgess is taller and can free his arms easier, he offers no more than Burgess in any part of the game, therefore he is a short man's Burgess.

Saying Gal 1st picked for whatever ok, but Burgess is 1st player picked for the Poms, the highest level he is eligible for, and I would hazard a guess he would be 1st picked for NSW if he could be.

Paul Gallen runs this team, Falnno will never pull him into line and therefore the chances of this team winning football games relies on Gallen deciding himself to play for the betterment of his team, not himself, put simply that is to allow Todd Carney to take over.

I'm not declaring that will lead to wins straight away, but it will give this team as it is currently constructed the BEST OPPORTUNITY to win and the best chance to compete for a playoff spot, this is still a terribly flawed team but luckily so are the majority of teams in the comp.

Anyway I don't even know why care about this, it's sort of funny to watch him try and do everything and push one of the best half backs in the comp out of the way.
