Rugby League 101. Win the go forward battle (win the ruck) and you will have the opposition defence on the back foot.

The retreating defensive line is not the problem; it’s just a symptom of a bigger issue. The best two examples this season imo are Souths big wins v Manly and the Roosters. The highlights show swags of tries scored down edges against retreating defensive lines; watch the whole set of six and you’ll see them bend or break the line in the middle third first.

With the rule change, faster ruck = more fatigue in the middle = softer middle third defence = more retreating edge defences = more points. That is exactly what the NRL wanted.

Exactly. We are in need of a good defensive prop to start the game in BHU spot and he needs to move to the bench. I would also say I think Nikora provides no impact when running the ball and that I feel is as much of an issue as his defence. He need to out on a solid 5kg.

Glad he’s calling it out... Said it for while that it’s pretty clear Morris might not be ready for the big time just yet

Well it was your darling Flanno (yes, and the board) who got himself sacked and got us fined so we were in the position to have to go with Morris in the first place.

The main problem with our defence is is giving the opposition the ball back continuously through STUPIDITY .
Have we ever controlled or are we nearly always defending for the first 20 minutes of our games ,

TBF we've done that for years, but at least previously we wouldn't just get rolled through the middle every set and then somehow have gaps in the middle of our line and on our edges every set on the try line.
But we've loved a dumb penalty, cheap turnover back into the flanno days

Pretty impressed with our new version of this which allows us to handover possession without ever really having it; let kickoff bounce into touch, drop it before the first hit up or get tackled in-goal returning the kickoff. No more wasting time getting to tackle 3.

Is that classified as an “incomplete set” if you don’t even touch the ball??

the fans see it
club legends see it
just HOPE coaching unit sees it

but I'm sure they do, just need to commit more to it.

Ive seen teams over the years pull it back and kick the defence into gear. wish something would snap this week tho

if they knew how to fix it and were allocated the appropriate amount of time to sorting it we would have already seen some moreconsistent improvement and if the don't think it is our biggest issue right now then there is no helping us until those staff are replaced

I doubt we are goingto change our game in 1 week. This will probably be our last week of the season but who knows, anything can happen.

well we would have to do something we have failed to do all year and that is out defend a decent side

Rugby League 101. Win the go forward battle (win the ruck) and you will have the opposition defence on the back foot. The thing is that we haven’t seen much of it in the NRL for a while because of the ju-jitsu that was allowed in the play the ball.

the NRL really should have consulted our club first before implementing the rule changes - obviously a planned move to force us to fold

Our defence provides a lot of anytime try scorer options. 4.20 for Whitehead looks alright.

the big issue with our defence is craig sandercock was our defensive coach, and he has now signed with canterbury to be their attacking coach

i was thinking about that. Barrett is the attacking coach for Penrith, and clearly very good at it. I think Sandercock might be there to just help with the attack based on Barrett's plan.

For us it seems Sandercock completely ran defence.

Still makes you wonder what his strengths are. Additionally why did they have to blow up Flanno's defence. I presume there was a knowledge gap Morris and Sandercock couldn't fill so they changed it. And really fugged it up.

I do put some of our defensive issues partially down to being a young squad and playing a long season with no breaks. They don't have that experience and starch yet.

Morris obviously, that's not to say he's not a defensive coach, a lot of ACs are jack of all trades coaches that aren't pigeon holed to once facet of the game.

Barrett has worked with Sandercock before so wanted to bring in guys he knows.
