Pretty much we need our best post covid defensive game just to be competitive, we hung in there against parra in crap conditions other than that been a shambles, with a young team it needs to be drilled in to them games (especially finals) are influenced by defence as much as they are attack. We all know what the top teams can do with momentum, just hope when we arrive at the gun fight we are packing more than fire crackers.

Can anyone please explain to me why we are constantly retreating in Defence? They play the ball and we all stand back and wait and starting moving backwards as they run towards us. Opposition teams make 60-70m a set. Watching all the other top 8 teams their line speed is 10x ours

Our passive D gives the opposition time & space to play. When we do engage the attack first attempt is usually a miss or ineffective & allows 2nd phase play. We retreat because we're constantly having to try and readjust our line.

We've got to encourage the opposition to run at the defender, ignore the gaps, and not offload.

Time to send out some Sharks ambassadors in secondment roles.

because we are unfit and under fatigue from mistakes and why would you push up when you don't trust your outside men to come with you/

also Cronulla....

Our defence!

that's unfair, that gate looks pretty solid, is painted and everything!

The weird thing is that last season while we had defensive issues we were not THIS bad. did Gallen and josh morris make that much of a difference? also pre-covid we hung in with souths and melbourne and didnt **** the bed defensively. but since the post covid resumption we have been horrid, are the new rules effecting us that much? it certainty wasn't prior who struggled all year. we can't just give away the penalty and reset like we used to with the set restarts, that's part of it but not all of it

attitude adjustment isn't enough, we are still gunna be caught out of position and under fatigue and miss tackles or create overlaps for the opposition with bad reads

call out all the adversity and challenges you want the coaching staff have failed miserably, Morris has played league most of his life surely he can muster up a structure that's better than this or tell sandmycock to **** off out of this club. Morris is still stuck in the under 20's system and some of his 'help' is doing more damage than good

It seems we have swapped with Canberra. They could score points no problem, but couldn’t defend a couple of years ago. Times have changed

canberra were never this bad surely. plus now they can attack AND defend

that year was real adversity but we still had a crack and pulled off some epic gutsy wins

Honestly it looked like we didn’t give a rats ass This game because Canberra fielded a sub standard side, we we did the same and played to not get injured. Our defence was woeful, as it’s been all year, and the new guys hand NFI how to fit into the structure.
To be fair the incumbents probably have NFI , we don’t have a strategy when it comes to defending our line and it tells when you see guys jumping out and leaving gaping holes in the middle. Canberra are going to tear us a new one next week. Can’t believe I’m hanging out for Chad to return.

seems the players are just trying to get through to the end of the season and will occasionally step up to put on the odd highlight in attack but no killer instinct or grit to stay the course and go further than week 1. they don't like the hard stuff, prefer the quick and easy options

they are young and have time on their side but also need to relise finals are not a sure thing every season and a footy players career is still relatively short, particularly their peak years

We've got to encourage the opposition to run at the defender, ignore the gaps, and not offload.

our opposition have adopted the Oz Tag mantra of ran at spaces not at faces

I would like to hope all fans see the problem but it is good to see club legends agree I'll say that.

the fans see it
club legends see it
just HOPE coaching unit sees it

but I'm sure they do, just need to commit more to it.

Ive seen teams over the years pull it back and kick the defence into gear. wish something would snap this week tho

Agree. Let’s hope the club takes action cause we are a ****ing joke.

The defence has been a joke all season, don't know what the club has done this year. If you want to win there is no reason to play a beautiful style as such, better to win & play ugly then not at all imo.

I doubt we are goingto change our game in 1 week. This will probably be our last week of the season but who knows, anything can happen.

Rugby League 101. Win the go forward battle (win the ruck) and you will have the opposition defence on the back foot. The thing is that we haven’t seen much of it in the NRL for a while because of the ju-jitsu that was allowed in the play the ball.

The retreating defensive line is not the problem; it’s just a symptom of a bigger issue. The best two examples this season imo are Souths big wins v Manly and the Roosters. The highlights show swags of tries scored down edges against retreating defensive lines; watch the whole set of six and you’ll see them bend or break the line in the middle third first.

With the rule change, faster ruck = more fatigue in the middle = softer middle third defence = more retreating edge defences = more points. That is exactly what the NRL wanted.
