Ok another industry .. Miners get paid danger money to to dangerous work. They know they can be killed or injured and no matter how much they invest in safety , how much training etc , people get hurt and killed all the time . It’s inherently dangerous . That’s why that have insurance and that’s why they get paid ****loads. I can’t see how this is any different.

How many players that play the game actually end up with these head issues?

I’d say a very very low percentage

They should test them before their careers and after.

A lot can't string a sentence together to begin with but seem to improve with each bump on the head.

And you think if a miner died on the job for something a court determines is negligence on the mining companys part, that they wouldnt be made to pay damages?

You are confusing things here mate. In footy the inherent risks are sore knees and bung shoulders. Due to the wear and tear the game causes through normal play. Copping a shoulder to the head is not normal play.

The problem they have is that they are penalising players For minor contact that is mostly accidental, you will never get that out of the game unless you outlaw tackling and runnnig .it’s common sense. I’m all for penalising deliberate directly contact that is intended to hurt. But the shot they have been pulling up this weekend , admittedly there have been a couple of exceptions. Has been farcicle. They won’t have game to protect soon.

Im pretty sure CTE cant be diagnosed until death because the brain needs to be cut open to find the damage. The symptoms would be theremthough.

Steve Folkes family donated his brain which confirmed he had CTE from his playing days. I said way back then it was only a matter of time until we see a full crack down on this stuff. The NRL cant sit on its hands

Of course, I’m not heartless. But how many big head hits are caused by deliberate negligence ?

There aren’t many deliberate , negligent head hits, the ones they I’ve pulled up this weekend for the post part have been very low scale, except maybe Papali.

Players who milk the head high crackdown, eg Tedesco tonight, should be named and shamed.

Tell them to go play soccer or something.

Not only is it poor sportsmanship but it's undermining efforts to improve player safety.

And research says most damage is caused by repeat low impact collisions. Not the 1/100 bad shots. If you want to stop the brain injuries then footy cannot be played anymore

Tonight I watched a defender get sent to the bin because a bloke tripped into him and hit his head on the tacklers shoulder.

The impact of this rule change isn't just on players heads. Teams chances will be affected, players missing games, fans not getting the sport or spectacle they paid for through tickets and memberships. It's disgraceful how careless and reckless the NRL are being with the rules and the essence of the game the fans love.

I can't see this rule lasting more than this week.

I agree. The papalii one was definitely bad. The Chad one was laughable. I dont think this decision was made lightly to do this though. They would have known it was going to cause backlash but there has to be a line where they pick player safety over the spectacle. With fine asjustment it will work out fine. Noones going to miss head high tackles.

Also, im over clubs using HIA as a cheap interchange

I didn't see much of this game but tuned in just before Townsend got penalised.

I have a good mate who coaches a lower grade team in another club. He said it was a joke of a call.

The NRL is too stupid to realise that the increase in head knocks is a direct result of their new rules to speed up the game.

Id also say half the ‘head knocks’ that are people going off for a hia are just a quick interchange

Disgusted. They can go and play netball if they are worried about head injuries.

This isnt about the players being worried about headknocks though.

We live in a time when you can successfully sue a shopping centre for tripping over a slippery when wet sign. The nrl needs to have its protective measures in place

I am surprised headgear hasn't been made compulsory in junior football.

I am surprised headgear hasn't been made compulsory in junior football.

It has been shown by several studies that headgear does not prevent concussion. In some cases it can actually increase the occurrence of concussion because a player is over-confident.

In my experience, almost all players start with headgear “because mum wants them to” but after a year or two only a few players on each team stick with it.

Some RU juniors leagues make it mandatory because it is shown by studies that it can reduce the likelihood of cuts in rucks/mauls.

All of this is documented in the NRL Development Framework.

**

I agree though, some idiot will ignore all of this and make it mandatory.
