My summary of Moylans Shark Career
2018: Mixed Bag - couldn't pass, couldn't catch but had some good games later on and showed up traitor Maloney in finals against Panthers. Showed his class and potential at times but legs were starting to go and his timing was way off at times.
2019: Injured (probably) Crap (probably). honestly don't even remember him this season
2020: Injured (defs) Crap (defs) Attitude and commitment questionable
2021: Injured (defs) - crap (probably) at least had a crack in defense.
2022: Good season
2023: Mixed Bag. Handy with ball but couldn't tackle
Decent nice fella off the pitch, a very topsy turvey NRL career
Most years he has been good when he plays, only remember one multi game stretch of garbage (before this year), def some issues as he swapped back and forth between positions too
2021 in 15 games
1st: William Kennedy - 38
2nd: Toby Rudolf - 15
3rd: Jack Williams - 11.5
4th: Connor Tracey - 11
5th: Matt Moylan - 10.5
2019 in 11 games
1st: Shaun Johnson - 20.5
2nd: Chad Townsend - 19.5
3rd: Josh Morris - 14
4th: Braden Hamlin-Uele - 13
5th: Josh Dugan - 11.5
6th: Andrew Fifita - 10
7th: Matt Moylan - 8
In 2020 he missed two rounds (then we had covid break), played bench, played FE, missed a game, played FB 3 weeks in a row, missed 4 games, played FE 3 games in a row, done for the season. Even then we won 5/7 games he started in a year our overall winrate was 50%
But really between the moves and injuries he didn't have much hope of having a 'good' season there.
In 2019 he got 5 of his 8 votes in round 1 and 2 - he did play 3 but then was gone until round 11, played a decent stint after that but only had one more 3 point game, his round 11 return. We did have a big win the next week but then was a string of four 1-2 point losses (all four we scored more tries than oppositon, SJ goal kicking). He missed round 23 onwards, through to final.
I should add, overall objectively speaking I consider Moylan a bad signing.
I think it made sense at the time and I think he generally played good football for us - when playing. Not sure what evidence there is he didn't take his rehab seriously enough (besides smirking) and a lot of his struggles (injury and form) stemmed from being moved around, which was out of his control. But overall I would say for expenditure vs what we got, bad signing.
His 2022 contract extension was probably (safe to say?) his best contract with us.
