Stosic to head to Titans!
13-Jul-2006

The Gold Coast Titans in 2007 is a long way from the Midhurst Junior Magpies (Taranaki region of New Zealand’s North Island) where Sharks Prop James Stosic (Pron – store-sitch) began playing Rugby League.

Today the 24 year old became the 22nd signing for the Gold Coast Titans, agreeing to terms for 2 years.

“I am really excited. I have family on the south side of Brisbane and that was one of the main reasons for me, apart from the lifestyle. I mean it is the perfect place to be really. On the professional side I am excited about the signings the Titans have made to date and am also keen to be coached by John Cartwright. But being away from New Zealand and having family just up the road in Brisbane is really important to me.”

Stosic has worked his way into the starting line up at the Sharks this season – replacing an injured Hutch Maiava initially then has gone on to start as prop for 10 matches this season.

The latest chapter in Stosic’s career has given more credence to the former Junior Kiwi’s decision in 2003 to come out of retirement at the ‘ripe old age’ of 21.

“I was up in Brisbane and wasn’t doing much,” said Stosic. “In fact I had given the game away but I got a phone call from my manager at the time who told me to pack my bags and head for the Newtown Jets in Sydney to try out for Premier League. I was lucky enough to get in and they gave me the opportunity to come back into the sport.”

Titans Head Coach John Cartwright has big wraps on his latest signing believing the way Stosic has broken into the game at the highest level, is fitting of the type of player he is recruiting.

Cartwright said, “He did it (broke through to NRL level) the tough way playing Premier League for Newtown then going to Cronulla. He was working as a brickie’s labourer, coming home and going to training arriving back home at 8 o’clock then going to bed then getting up for work the next day to do the same all over. So he’s done things the hard way and l like guys like that – they appreciate what football can offer them. I saw him play in the residents game for NSW against Queensland last year and he was probably the best player on the field. That stuck in my memory bank and then I’ve watched him with interest this year and he’s performed well.”

Gold Coast Titans signings to date:
Forwards: James Stosic (Sharks), Mark Minichiello (Souths) Clint Amos (Cowboys) Michael Henderson (Dragons) Michael Hodgson (Raiders) Frank Puletua (Panthers) Luke Bailey (Dragons) Anthony Laffranchi (Tigers) Luke Swain (Panthers) Brad Meyers (Bradford) Nathan Friend (Storm) Luke O’Dwyer (Eels)

Backs: Brett Delaney (Eels) Jake Webster (Melbourne Storm) Gavin Cooper (Cowboys) Steve Turner (Melbourne Storm) Preston Campbell (Panthers) Brian Carney (Newcastle) Matt Petersen (Eels) Scott Prince (Tigers) Richie Mathers (Rhinos) Josh Graham (Western Force)

The Gold Coast's recruitment drive has continued, with the new NRL club signing promising Cronulla prop James Stosic on a two-year deal.

Stosic's signature comes just a day after the new franchise announced the signings of Parramatta centre Brett Delaney and South Sydney back-rower Mark Minichiello.

The 24-year-old has been a revelation for the Sharks this season, playing in 10 matches and earning a starting position after initially replacing injured front rower Hutch Maiava.

"I am really excited, I have family on the south side of Brisbane and that was one of the main reasons for me, apart from the lifestyle," Stosic said.

"On the professional side I am excited about the signings the Titans have made to date and am also keen to be coached by John Cartwright.

"But being away from New Zealand and having family just up the road in Brisbane is really important to me."

Stosic retired from rugby league three years ago but gave the sport another crack after an opportunity arose at the Newtown Jets Premier League team.

Titans coach John Cartwright praised Stosic's work ethic.

"He did it (broke through to NRL level) the tough way playing Premier League for Newtown then going to Cronulla," Cartwright said.

"He was working as a brickies labourer, coming home and going to training arriving back home at 8 o'clock then going to bed then getting up for work the next day to do the same all over.

"So he's done things the hard way and I like guys like that - they appreciate what football can offer them.

"I saw him play in the residents game for NSW against Queensland last year and he was probably the best player on the field.

"That stuck in my memory bank and then I've watched him with interest this year and he's performed well."

Gold Coast Titans signings to date:

Forwards: James Stosic (Sharks), Mark Minichiello (Souths), Clint Amos (Cowboys), Michael Henderson (Dragons), Michael Hodgson (Raiders), Frank Puletua (Panthers), Luke Bailey (Dragons), Anthony Laffranchi (Tigers), Luke Swain (Panthers), Brad Meyers (Bradford), Nathan Friend (Storm), Luke O'Dwyer (Eels).

Backs: Brett Delaney (Eels), Jake Webster (Melbourne Storm), Gavin Cooper (Cowboys), Steve Turner (Melbourne Storm), Preston Campbell (Panthers), Brian Carney (Newcastle), Matt Petersen (Eels), Scott Prince (Tigers), Richie Mathers (Rhinos), Josh Graham (Western Force).

Stosic says Sharks style didn't suit

5 January 2007
Taranaki Daily News, NZ

"The way the Sharks are playing -- they missed out on a spot in the semifinals again last year -- and their play just didn't suit my style of play."
-- James Stosic

James Stosic's professional rugby league career is back on track after he red-carded himself from the game.

Stosic (25) turned his back on rugby league three years ago, frustrated at his lack of progress in Australia.

At the time, the former junior Kiwis prop was playing reserve grade and had dreams of playing first grade.

"But when you get shot down by the coach saying that you're not going to make it (in first grade) until all these other guys either retire or move on, I just got disillusioned," Stosic said.

"Instead of being mature about it and training twice as hard and saying `I'll show you', I thought `stuff it' and gave up."

Stosic headed to Brisbane to be with family.

It was 12 months before Stosic realised he did have a future in league and didn't want to end up on the scrap heap.

"I saw guys that played in my representative teams playing NRL and thought to myself, what am I doing to myself?"

A gentle nudge from his manager, who offered him a position playing premier grade for Sydney club Newtown, got Stosic's career rolling again.

He worked hard mixing league with work as a brickie's labourer for a couple of years.

"You can't just walk into any NRL team and say, `hey I want to play for your reserve grade team'. You've got to earn your stripes and work your way up."

Stosic spent a season with Newtown before being snapped up by the Cronulla Sharks, where he spent two seasons.

His career highlight was being called up to play first grade for the Sharks in the 2005 season. It was the first of 25 first-grade games Stosic racked up with the Sharks.

But he was still frustrated and cut his ties with Cronulla at the end of last year, signing a two-year contract with the Gold Coast Titans -- a new franchise in the Australian NRL.

"The way the Sharks are playing -- they missed out on a spot in the semifinals again last year -- and their play just didn't suit my style of play."

Stosic has had six weeks of hard training with the Titans and is one of 31 players all eager to play first grade.

Stosic is quietly confident of making the Titans' starting line-up when the 2007 season kicks off in March.

"Most of the other props are bench players, so they might put me in a starting position. I'm just trying to make the 17 at the moment.

"Being on the bench would do me fine, as long as I'm playing first grade."

The Titans have set an ambitious goal for their first season.

"We want to set a high standard and make the final, not just making the top eight, even though doing that would be a fine achievement for any team in its first year in the comp."

Suit his style??? He's got to be kidding, he's a prop, taking hit ups and making tackles isnt his style. Sorry the sharks got in the way of your explosive running game, kicking game and sublime ball playing skills James??????. What a pinhead. I dont think that his role at the titans will be any different, this guys kidding himself. He was only an average firstgrader anyway. Every prop we have at the club now is twice as good as this wannabe anyway. Please sharks fans, make the titans our new team to hate (besides the obvious red and white chokers).
