How long until we do the 'unluckiest' Sharks side because Ben Ross' list of injuries is absurd
And Jack Bird can definitely make that team

1. Preston Campbell
2. Ray Corcoran
3. Ben Pomeroy
4. Beau Scott
5. Beau Ryan
6. Jack Bird
7. Tommy Bishop
8. Les Davidson
9. John McMartin
10.Cliff Watson
11. Gavin Miller
12. Steve Kneen
13. Gal
14. Martin Lang
14. David Hatch
16. Kurt Sorensen
17. Ken Maddison
Coach. Flanno

Can't find a player to drop for G Bird
Any suggestions ?

Maybe some honorary omissions .
Greg Bird 2nd Row
Paul Mellor Centre
Chris Wellman 5/8
Danny Nutley Front Row

Assume this is reply to my other post not the one quoted but I'm happy enough with that.
You could maybe pretend JBird is a fullback and put him at 1 and GBird at 6, probably the only way you fit them both...

Actually for me I just drop Ken Maddison because I don't know who he is and Jack in the 17 Greg at 6.

No. He didn’t. He had a very good coach who realised how how well they could play off the back of him. Objectively he is probably the worst 5/8 ever to play origin, but imo selecting him was one of the smartest selections ever.

What? The team played well off the back of him and he had a good coach and that makes him bad and didn't play well? But was also a smart decision to play him there?
Bloke won 3 MOM awards in his Origin career and at least one of those was at 5/8 and from what I remember he absolutely earned it on his performance.

Just finished watching that 1999 semi verse the Broncos. Such fun.

A smallish, mobile, hard as ****ing nails forward pack just bursting with energy all game. Speed all over the park. Triester... what a tackling machine. Just effort everywhere.

amazing what happens when you run hard and straight and only look for the offload and ball playing if you've earned it and broken through the tackle/line. Lang, Stevens, McKenna, Pierce, Graham beasts that day and little to no mistakes

and yea little Triester, what an animal

He's not saying he played bad (I assume), he's saying objectively he wasn't a particularly talented player as far as what you'd usually have at rep level 5/8 (obviously super talented in other ways, and still had some reasonable 5/8 skills)

From a technical perspective he was not an elite 5/8, game management skills, passing, kicking etc
Look at the skill sets of some of the elite 5/8s around, he is very different to what you typically want in an NRL 5/8

But he was good enough in that area, and more than good enough in other areas, to absolutely excel there at times.

For the Blues he allowed them to maximise their strength (gun backrowers) by having an extra one on the field with a firing Bird in the thick of the action, assisting with what I don't specifically recall but assume was a pretty simple game plan.

I wasn't talking about his ability as a regular starting 5/8 at club level though I made the point he played some games there at Origin level and did very well. Burgess didn't agree

I think he is saying he didn't think Greg Bird played the traditional role of a 5/8 very well, especially compared to other rep level 5/8s, but agreeing that he did perform very well there in other ways and the decision to run him there over a conventional 5/8 worked out very well. Greg wasn't specifically a particularly elite 5/8 but he was an elite player who was used well on those occasions (which also speaks to how good he was in general).

But any way of trying to describe him simultaneously as both a sub par 5/8 and someone who dominated SOO games at 5/8 is kind of hard to explain haha

I played with/against a lot of well known players and several origin/international players

I’d like to hear a lot more about this!

Sorry for the late response to this one Chad. I'll send you a message - I don't think that particular content belongs in this thread.

BTW - the only Sharks players I can remember playing against in addition to Andrew Neave were Bill Dunn, Matt Bickerstaff and Darren Mapp.
