To be fair, I think it should be penalised. If you're going to fly off the line to put a shot on, the onus should be on the defender to not smash heads. I.e drop the shoulder instead of front on contact.

However when it's not explicitly in the rules to the point that no penalty is called, a grade 3 charge is a sick joke. Especially when the shoulder charge they have been trying to eradicate gets you a fine.
It's become they adjudicate based on consequences... a bloke gets injured? Suspend someone. Do something illegal but no one gets injured? Slap on the wrist.

No one want to answer this?
There's been pretty clear direction that contact to the head via arm or shoulder is going to get penalised (accidental or not) and it is up to the defender to manage the contact. Up until this week, head clashes have just been treated as accidents, a by product of playing a collision sport.

Ironically, you can punch someone in the head and not get suspended, but an accidental head clash gets hit with a grade 3?

Cleary (pretty reasonably for a ********) said:
Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said it was "weird" referee Ashley Klein chose not to penalise Finucane on the field.

"I guess historically a head clash has been a head clash," Cleary said on Saturday night.

"I just kind of think that for how easy it is to give a high-tackle penalty away now for contact with the head, it just looked bad.

"I am not exactly sure of interpretations but that is clearly contact with the head. It knocks him out. It is just weird that that is OK but the mildest of taps, sometimes, is not OK."

Has Dale taken the early plea? It looks like to me we only have Puma's word for this, reports I see are still stating he is facing a 2-3 week ban.

The fact that head clashes to date have been treated as accidents, I dont think all of a sudden just charging a player is fair and reasonable.

The fact no action was taken on the field further emphasises the fact that the NRL did not consider it illegal.

They should of used this week's NRL Ref briefing to change and clarify their position on head clashes moving forward.

Not that the NRL didn't, more than this particular referee didn't think it was at that time. And depending on the week or if it was a representative fixture, he had a 50/50 chance of being right.

I think if it wasn't for Dale's dramatic swining arm and Tyson-esque ear injury infliction it would have all gone away.

Fighting the charge.
With the quality of Dale's defence he he'll not only get off scott-free, but be issued with a public apology and receive the shred of Critchon's ear in a presentation gift box as a gesture of good will by the NRL

The whole bloody thing is ridiculous , as bad as the All Black one a couple of weeks back . Last time i looked i thought we played a contact sport , accidents do happen . But it's the way of the world now , somebody has to be at fault for every little thing that goes wrong and got to be seen doing something about it .

Wasn't just the ref mate. The bunker had a good couple of minutes reviewing the footage. At any other time they have no problems placing a tackle and report and a simple penalty.

The absence of any of this and the fact I can't recall any other accidental head clash being penalised means there is no precedent in this matter.

I guess we will find out tomorrow night. So glad we are challenging.

I thought he got knocked out because he hit his head on the ground.
