I hope members and people on here consider all the applicants instead of just blindly voting for Irvine's ticket. Not saying there is anything wrong with his ticket but why rule out a guy like Chris Downy. He has impressive credentials.

Also people might want to ask why Greg Holland is on the outer with Irvine. Is there a split in the board? It is also Holland that has invited Downy to apply and is today endorsing him in the Leader.

What is the real story here? I wouldnt mind knowing a bit more about this.

My mail is that Holland has been the leak over the past 2 years, and he's very much on the outer with the other 8 directors who have had to put up with his manipulative games.

He also abuses his privilege as a director to host his mates in the corporate facilities at games, and he does not pay his own way unlike the rest of the board members. Irvine and Surace, for example, are fully fledged sponsors of the club. They host their mates in their own corporate boxes paid for by their own businesses. Holland freeloads.

It's time he went, we don't want politicians on our board. We want do-ers, not talkers.

Downy Enters Race To Support Sharks

Downy enters race to support Sharks
BY BRAD FORREST
03 Aug, 2011 04:00 AM

FORMER NSW sports minister Chris Downy is concerned about Cronulla Sharks' football team and the long-term viability of the club.

Following the team's latest 46-16 drubbing at the hands of the Brisbane Broncos, Downy revealed why he had entered the race for election to the Sharks' new board of directors.

Downy is one of the new, high-profile applicants to the board before the club's annual general meeting on August 23, where club chairman Damian Irvine is unopposed. Other new applicants are shire-based lawyers Peter Kerr and Phillip Tiernan, former Sharks players Jonathon Docking and Dane Sorensen, and long-time club member Peter O'Driscoll.

Downy is not included on Irvine's chairman's ticket, nor is present director Greg Holland, who nominated Downy. "The last thing the Sharks need is a rival ticket, so in the best interests of the club I will urge members to vote for the present board, plus Chris Downy and Peter Kerr to fill the two vacancies," Holland said yesterday.

Downy is the executive director of the Australasian Casino Association — the peak industry body for the Australian and New Zealand casino industry.

He said it was important the Sharks' new board contained a cross-section of members who could offer a "wider perspective on the issues that will have an impact on the club and consequently the football team".

"The Sharks are one of the shire's great institutions and I want to ensure the club is able to support the football team so we can put a team on the field that is capable of being in the top eight, and on a continual basis," said Downy, a life-long shire resident and long-term member and supporter of the Sharks.

"Also, to ensure the club doesn't lose contact with junior sport and the development of junior talent in the shire."

Downy stressed the Sharks needed widespread community support for its important development plans in the coming period.

"The club has a great base - its own ground and a loyal and committed supporter base - but it needs to further develop that base to ensure that the club has a long-term viability," he said.

"This can only be achieved by bringing the whole of the shire community with it. I'm not sure that is happening at present."

A former St Patrick's College Sutherland student who completed a bachelor of arts (honours) at Sydney University and a diploma of education at Sydney Teachers College, Downy was a high school teacher who became Sutherland MP and the minister for sport, recreation and racing in the Fahey Liberal government in the mid 1990s.

He served as shadow minister before resigning from parliament in November 1997, and then going on to head community and government relations at Sydney Airport Corporation.

Yeah looks like Downy is Hollands man and Irvine doesn't like either. I would back Irvine on this one.

In all seriousness I really don't think it's personal.

One might suggest that Irvine doesn't trust Holland, I certainly believe that to be the case but you'd have to ask Irvine.

In relation to Downy, the board has carried out a considerable amount of due diligence on every nominee, and based on that process Irvine has selected his preferred 8 candidates.

Personally I was concerned at the outset about having someone so well connected and so overtly associated with the Liberal Party on board, given the ammunition this would give the anti-development brigade.

As for Holland's association with the ALP (a matter of public record), I feel the same way - Politicians who have publicly associated themselves with any party as candidates or elected representatives shouldn't be on boards such as ours, and I question the motives of any who seek to be.

Some interesting feedback on the Downy article at The Leader:
http://www.theleader.com.au/news/lo...ce-to-support-sharks/2245706.aspx?storypage=0

The Sharkies need all the help they can get! Downy is definitely the type of person they need on that board. Good luck to him!

The Sharks shouldn’t be used as an avenue for these blokes to push their political aspirations.

Holland has missed out on pre selection in the last state election and doesn’t seem to want to take the hint.

He has had 4 years and not achieved much, for the Sharks, time to step aside and stop trying to rally your political mates to come and join you!

Just what we DON’T need, another Pollie on the Sharks board to join Holland.

Chris Downy is a perfect choice for the board and exactly what the Sharks need right now. His experience and contacts will be a massive asset to the club.

I'm highly concerned. Is this simply an attempt by Mr. Downy to help his mates in the liberal party ?

Posted by Liam, 3/08/2011 1:08:15 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

I think the Sharks need to have Chris Downy on board his experience would be invaluable. He has my vote.

When Downy wanted to play politics he had the decency to become a politician. As a board member i think he would make a valuable contribution but importantly, he has the experience not to get the roles confused.

So, if Mr Downy is elected, will he attempt to put together a faction to overthrow the leadership of the Sharks and then when that fails suddenly decide to resign and 'spend more time with the family?' I seem to recall the last time he was elected to a position of power it ended up costing the taxpayer a motsa.

Yes to some good footy brains like Docking but 'thanks but no-thanks' to pollies!

I am concerned that some of you are referring to his experience as being highly valuable. I am all for seeing the right people in the boardroom at this great club, but I would be treading with extreme caution with this man - Its a no from me.

Go you Sharkies.

Mr Downy will bring a wealth of experience to this position and will represent the members with the upmost integrity! As a former NSW Sports Minister, this calibre of candidate doesn't walk through your boardroom door everyday willing to devote the energy and time that is required to steer the Sharks back to a road of recovery and prosperity. For far to long the Sharks board has been a complete farce, the results speak for themselves. Mr Downy will bring a refreshing contribution.

Posted by Scott, 3/08/2011 2:43:26 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

What neccessary, tangible experience exactly does Chris Downy bring to this Board? Political experience? No more pollies please.

Posted by liam, 3/08/2011 3:01:07 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

With respect Scott – I question your point about the board in years gone by being a ‘complete farce’. If this is the case, then why should Holland, a 4 year ‘veteran’ be re-elected, and why should us, as devoted Cronulla fans, and regular users of the leagues club not view any of his nominations with extreme skepticism?

Posted by Leon Bott, 3/08/2011 3:09:00 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

So for far too long the Sharks board has been a complete farce?

I think you'll find Mr Holland was a part of that.

Why would we take his recommendation?

Posted by Ben, 3/08/2011 3:13:47 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

I'm looking forward to seeing equal, balanced and fair exposure and commentary by The Leader on ALL of nominees for the new Sharks Board - not just the political opportunists.

Posted by fitz, 3/08/2011 3:43:40 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Chris Downy would be a great addition to the board and someone they desperately need! His wealth of experience and knowledge can only help the club achieve their goals and he would not doubt get them back on track. Good luck to him, a former sports minister on a sporting board seems like a good idea to me!

Posted by Cass, 3/08/2011 3:56:59 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

He must have a wealth of experience then, if Fiona, Scott, Cass, Greg and Rob all have identical viewpoints and speech patterns.

I hope you all make him breaky in bed when you roll out of it in the morning.

Posted by Leon Bott, 3/08/2011 4:41:37 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Holland and Downy are already playing politics. Not on, lads.
I won't be voting for these guys, I think there's an agenda there somewhere and I reckon the rest of the incumbent board would be their target.

Irvine, Surace, Douglas, Walker and co have done wonders for the club. Let them get on with it without distraction!

Posted by Zaphod, 3/08/2011 7:52:43 PM, on St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Where are the female candidates??? I might be sceptical, but it looks like the existing female board members were a cosmetic fix when things were rotten. Better not be moving back to an all boys club - that's when the problems start. Have we learned nothing Sharkies?

Obvious cash for comment or forgery there.

God that pisses me off.

I guess that is exactly what you get when politicians seek to get on Boards and exactly why I say NO to having them there.

Nice to see Leon Bott making the last comment in that above newspaper extracts.

He was the NRL version of a 'one-hit-wonder'. He never struck me as a reader of the 'Leader'...
