Irvine has to stay.simple as that:cheers

The bloke is a fan first and foremost and has the clubs best interests at heart unlike previous chairmans(cough..cough pierce)who only have the intersets of their wallets at heart.

I think Barry Pierce did genuinely think he was doing the right thing, Nulla. The issue was that the world had changed, he hadn't. Didn't make him wrong or negligent, just out-dated.

Barry Pierce is a good man. As Shark says though, a bit out of touch with the way modern business and football administration is done but a good and honourable man nonetheless.

I gained a lot of respect for him when I asked his opinion on the future Property Development. He all but conceded that the former Board's plans weren't up to scratch in comparison to the current Board's plans and was fully supportive of the new directions taken.

What I believe we need in a Board is a balance of skills and abilities that cover not only the Football side of the operations but also the business and financial aspects as well.

I hope the new Board, whoever they may be, are not stymied by entropic internal power struggles or any of that nonsense and are completely focused as a team on achieving results.

It goes without saying that all the Board members should have a solid business acumen and possess strong skills and knowledge in corporate governance, compliance and financial management.

The more I think about the direction professional sport is going, the more I realise how important new technologies, information architecture, network management and media strategy will have. There is so much more to the Sharks than just putting a football team on the field.

I'm also hoping that at some stage the fundamental constitution of the organisation can be reviewed and reworked with a view to having the most appropriate structure to ensure long-term success and sustainability.

I feel sure that any reasoned person can see that the current Board, and in particular the Chairman Damian Irvine, has performed outstandingly in what has been very testing times for the Club.

Hopefully we will see further refinement and improvements in the future Board as well.

Our future is bright but only if we make it so.

I disagree.I'm sure he loves the club, actually I have no doubt but he didnt have the best interests of the club at heart,no way.If he did he would not of let it become such a basket case.
All he did was spend, spend, spend whilst pocketing a nice little pay pack every week, when he knew all to well the club was in a very fragile financial position.

In all seriousness Fitz - I'd like to see you have a crack at a board position.

You have demonstrated you cerrtainly have the nous to succeed and you certainly have a lot to offer.

I'm serious - give it some thought

^^^^^^

What he said.

Your silky smooth PR and wordsmithing skills rival anything Sludge ever did with a football, and your understanding of the internet (in particular social media) would offer strength in the only skill-set where the current board might be a little weak.

Think about it.

I'd sign your nomination...

I hope this goes pretty smoothly without any big challenge, we don't need the off-field distraction at the moment. But I think there is always an opportunity to take the Flanagan approach and upgrade certain positions gradually.

Having said that... I don't have an agenda here, and don't want to see a board of yes-men, e.g. from the very limited things I've heard Keith Ward is a decent person, and maybe a good balance on the board?

Anyway, together they've done a fantastic job over the past 2 years. Seem to be a lot of team players, and for a "divided" board, they still seem to have kept the off-field politics and leaks to a minimum.

In the end I mainly just want to see transparency in all these processes, and the rest should work itself out!

That's nice to hear. I think his main fault in this regard was in trying his best not to develop the playing fields, and not upset the neighbours/local community. An admirable aim, but no longer avoidable. I don't think any of the big partners would have got on board if it was limited to the eastern carpark.

You would have to ask the club's external auditors mate, I believe the release of the financials currently depends on them. Note that they are completely independent and cannot be bullied or pressured into any release by the club.

I totally agree that Fitz should put himself up for nomination to the board.

I'd be fully supportive of it as well.

Barry Pierce is a life member of the club, a good bloke and was always above board and operated with integrity. I know the club didnt do that well under him but suggestions he was dodgy or self serving are just wronf.

He put in alot of hours with this club, and also with the ARL and he was rightly remunerated for that time and effort. What should become clear out of this is the phenomenal gesture it is from the current board who do all of this FOR FREE. Its almost unheard of, and it shouldnt be forgotten that these highly credentialed professionals would and should get very well payed for their time at any other organisation on the planet.

As an outsider looking in, not knowing any of the previous board nor any of the current, it's hard for supporters not to be somewhat filthy for the mess our club has been put in. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I don't know the true figures here, but didn't we go from something like 10 mil in the black to 10 mil in the red in the space of 10 years. If that's the case then NO, no one deserves a remuneration package on that record.

We are still here so Irvine must be doing at least a reasonable job with his side of the board. What we don't need is the others who were around in the run us into the ground era to keep hanging around.

Fitzy;

No one is suggesting Pierce did a magnificent (or even good) job and the figures you have produced are right enough, and damning in themselves. However, there has been an inference that Pierce was shonky, dodgy or "up to something". That clearly isnt the case. While he was chairman/director of the club it was basically his full time job and he was paid a modest (less than six figure) salary to do that job full time. It is incorrect to state that he didnt deserve that money. He worked hard, and he tried his best for the club.

Its like saying that a politician like Kristina Kennealey shouldnt have received her wage.

Again, rather than make Baz look bad, it should make Irvine and co look very, very good because they are doing it for free.

And if you dont know, Irvine and co are doing a magnificent job. They have saved the club, got us back on track and if things keep going to plan will turn us into one of the top 5 financial clubs in the NRL. When you look at what they have had to work with and the constant pressure, it is a phenomenal achievement.

no one hopefully.

At the vote they should make another night out of it. get some people to the club. it would also be good to see everyone go up as one behind our chairman.

Just like the EAGM... inspiring stuff

New Sharks' Board On The Cards

New Sharks' Board On The Cards
BY BRAD FORREST
St George and Sutherland Shire Leader
27 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM

CRONULLA Sharks could have a new or restructured board of directors in a few weeks' time as the club continues preparations to have their planned $300 million retail-property development finally approved.

The club has received 12 nominations for the eight directors' positions up for ballot leading up to the club's annual general meeting (August 23), with no challenges to chairman Damian Irvine's position.

Six of the eight present directors have indicated they will seek another term, and have been joined by six new applicants.

It leads to speculation as to whether Irvine will follow the lead of previous chairmen, Peter Gow and Barry Pierce, and run with a "president's ticket" in advance of the AGM.

Chris Downy, the former Sutherland MP and state Liberal government sports minister and Sydney lawyer and water polo identity, Peter Kerr, are two of the interesting new applicants.

Downy is executive director of the Australasian Casino Association and was head of corporate and government relations at Sydney Airports Corporation.

Kerr, who has acted for many of Australia's largest banks and financial institutions, is well known for his work in Australian and international sport.

A representative water polo player in his prime, Kerr gave the judges' oath at the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, was a member of the FINA doping panel and several other sporting appeals tribunals, and is Australian Water Polo Inc chairman.

Other new applicants include former Sharks' New Zealand international Dane Sorensen and former Sharks' fullback star Jonathon Docking, who have both served on previous Cronulla boards; long-serving club member Peter O'Driscoll and solicitor Phillip Tiernan, the former Illawarra Steelers and Parramatta first grade player and head of Caringbah legal firm, Tiernan and Associates.

Present directors Ricky Sorace, Greg Holland, Craig Douglas, Paul Walker, Jim Barnett and Keith Ward have re-nominated. Female directors Denise Aldous and Jenny Reynolds have not.

Nominations for the board closed last Wednesday, with members voting August 16-22, the day before the club's AGM.

The Sharks have planned another members' information night on August 8 to discuss the latest details on the club's $300m development proposal, which was approved by members in February this year.
