CRONULLA Sharks could have a new or restructured board of directors in a few weeks' time as the club continues preparations to have their planned $300 million retail-property development finally approved.
The club has received 12 nominations for the eight directors' positions up for ballot leading up to the club's annual general meeting (August 23), with no challenges to chairman Damian Irvine's position.
Six of the eight present directors have indicated they will seek another term, and have been joined by six new applicants.
It leads to speculation as to whether Irvine will follow the lead of previous chairmen, Peter Gow and Barry Pierce, and run with a "president's ticket" in advance of the AGM.
Chris Downy, the former Sutherland MP and state Liberal government sports minister and Sydney lawyer and water polo identity, Peter Kerr, are two of the interesting new applicants.
Downy is executive director of the Australasian Casino Association and was head of corporate and government relations at Sydney Airports Corporation.
Kerr, who has acted for many of Australia's largest banks and financial institutions, is well known for his work in Australian and international sport.
A representative water polo player in his prime, Kerr gave the judges' oath at the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, was a member of the FINA doping panel and several other sporting appeals tribunals, and is Australian Water Polo Inc chairman.
Other new applicants include former Sharks' New Zealand international Dane Sorensen and former Sharks' fullback star Jonathon Docking, who have both served on previous Cronulla boards; long-serving club member Peter O'Driscoll and solicitor Phillip Tiernan, the former Illawarra Steelers and Parramatta first grade player and head of Caringbah legal firm, Tiernan and Associates.
Present directors Ricky Sorace, Greg Holland, Craig Douglas, Paul Walker, Jim Barnett and Keith Ward have re-nominated. Female directors Denise Aldous and Jenny Reynolds have not.
Nominations for the board closed last Wednesday, with members voting August 16-22, the day before the club's AGM.
The Sharks have planned another members' information night on August 8 to discuss the latest details on the club's $300m development proposal, which was approved by members in February this year.
