I’ll be devastated if we move, I still think it’s important for teams to have proper home grounds in their traditional heartlands, Rugby League is a tribalistic game and if a team representing the suburb of Cronulla is playing out of the SFS or if Cronulla end up playing out of the traditional home ground of their most bitter rivals, then I think we lose a major part of what makes the Cronulla Sharks the Cronulla Sharks.

However,

I’m not an ignorant rube, I know that money talks unfortunately. Realistically, we will end up moving to one of the upgraded boutique stadiums of Shark Park doesn’t receive any love from the Government. If that happens well I’m just praying that the club itself will still be based at Shark Park. As in the offices, training facilities and whatnot. The club would still train there and probably play a trial game every year there, the Reserves (when the Jets affiliation ends), the youth teams and the Women’s team would play there too. That would be the best case scenario if the unthinkable happens.

I really just don’t see what is wrong with Shark Park.

A couple things that come to mind for me ;

  • If we want finals footy there we need female change rooms.
  • The corporate facilities are not amazing and well behind what other clubs are offering
  • The bars and general catering are also behind what other clubs are offering
  • And for those that care there's very little cover from the elements.

The biggest thing is who's going to fund any serious upgrades to the stadium? I probably prefer they spend any money they have on a COE so they remain competitive and have facilities to help with recruitment. The Eels are about to build a COE, Tigers and Manly are building one. Roosters, Panthers, Souths and Dogs all have state of the art ones now. Not sure what the Dragons are doing.

I couldn’t care less about finals football. We could maybe get one game a year there at tops anyway. It’s not worth the investment if that is your driver.

The corporate facilities are meant to be improved.

The undercover seating is a “ concern” but we don’t live in a perfect world. We should try to extend that a bit but I don’t believe we have to that much. You put a roof over the top you also lose the sun on a nice day. Quite frankly, after being inside most of the week it’s nice to have a bit of exposure to the elements.

Are we still getting the centre of excellence ? Or is that entirely dependent on the grants from the gov

From post #3379. Not looking good.

Still working hard for the Centre of Excellence, but the extra grants they are hoping for are too difficult politically currently. They are looking at fallback options so we could still use the State government grant.

Hard to justify spending coin on a sporting venue when COVID is killing off businesses I guess.

Let’s put it into perspective.
An upgrade to a football stadium primarily used by 1 team in one sport only is a luxury and can’t be high on any governments priority list. Whereas backing small business and keeping people in their own homes and off the streets is far more bang for their buck and a better outcome for everyone as a whole.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love us to have a COE with a state of the art stadium, but what government is going to help fund that right now given these other challenges?
If we want all that, we will need to fund it ourselves or get corporate backing to fund it (another challenge in itself).

All true mate. Even post covid, can't see any government paying for improvemens to a ground only used 12-13 times per year.

Our challenge would be to provide the government with a plan which shows a benefit for the community.
If the ground/ stadium can be developed into a “multipurpose” use with far reaching appeal for other sports, events, community use etc, then we could make a far more attractive case for investment.

Well it's not all about you is it. The club cares about playing finals footy both for home field advantage and the $$$

Where’s the advantage though? It’s probably one game every 5 years or so which is never guaranteed. You could go a decade without getting one. If we play that one game elsewhere every blue moon it’s better than having to move permanently.

Also, the finals are NRL games. So we might get a tiny bit of rent from them and some decent sales at the Leagues Club. But it’s not really worth it for the income stream. At the end of the day the NRL will just change the rules to play it wherever they like anyway. We’ll probably just be pushed in to a double header with the Roosters to pump up their crowd.

We're offering Bellamy $1.6m per year? Jesus that's a lot of money, I think we're going a bit overboard here.

Anyone think Morris had damaged his future coaching prospects by feeding the media machine on this process?

He’s playing the sympathy card a bit much. Might get you far in the public eye but not at the clubs. They won’t care. They only care about his coaching.

Meh.

A few “journos” have their bee in a bonnet still and live to smash the Sharks.

Love how Weidler says "when it was time to face the music" as if the media has some kind of control over a club.

Get over yourself, ********.

Yes, a bit of a gamble
If can we become a winning top 4 side and can lure an extra 4000 home fans that would generate at least $100,000/per game at the gate before drink , food , merchandise sales and post game fans at club then it would be worth it .
No doubt Bellamy offers lots of additional benefits that could be factored in . ( perhaps players coming for unders etc )
BUT , if we don't step up on the field then 1.6 mil/year will become a huge drain on resources

The Club has recently secured $4M (Reported) worth of sponsorship. In the current economic climate, that is nothing short of a miracle and even more so when you consider our own history with sponsorship challenges.

My own thoughts are that you don’t get sponsors on board that quickly unless there is a significant change that brings value.

If the club has $4M in sponsorship and the alleged Bellamy offer is $1.6M that’s good business my Friends.

Well sounds like that is coming from external sources. A lot of money and no wonder we’re still in the running.

Mace said he wasn't contributing, where's it coming from exactly?

If some does end up being external then all good.
