His finishing, defence and positioning.

For the record I'm not saying Dugan is a better fullback then Val, but Val is a better singer then he is a fullback and should play in his best position

Valentine Holmes does sound like the lead singer of a soft cock rock band...

What does this tell us? Well - he's probably not going to be as good as Lockyer ... but it's not unreasonable to think Holmes will be compared to the rest of the players on that list by the time he's 25. If he's not, stick him back on the wing or let him walk. For now we've gotta give him time to grow in to that role. 18 NRL games is not enough of a sample for anyone to be making a decision on whether he is the guy or not (he's played 21 games this season but 3 were on the wing).
This is a load of ****e. It doesn't take years to see if a bloke's positioning is not to the standard of a fullback. Holmes is not a good fullback, he doesn't know where to be at the times where he's needed. He is basically like a ****ter Roger Tuivasa-Sheck at the moment.

I'd also prefer to see him on the wing next year when Dugan arrives. He's an awesome finisher and is great at taking work off tiring forwards with his trademark hard runs.

Great post, Burgess. It's this sort of thing that keeps me coming back.

The thing about Val is that he learns and gets better. Positional play, ball playing, defensive organisation... they're not at the top level standard now, but Val has the talent and aptitude to get there.

That's why I'd say stick with him. Blokes like Bird, Dugan, even Gordon just can't change their game enough.

Bumping my own thread to try to calm the angry mob; as others have said it would be nice to see a poll that has a "give him a bit more time" option. I think that would be the prevailing opinion.

You have to compare whats in front of you. Tedesco made it work.

Dugan isnt a modern fullback

And Holmes isn't either imo (Yet atleast) I'm not crazy about Dugan at FB but defensively he'll be much better.

I think we're still in a window to have red hot crack this season, once Gal and Lewis go it's a different story. It seems like Flanno isn't willing to wait and give Val the time he probably needs. And I tend to agree. We can't write off a season of him learning the ropes.

That was last year, and he still didn't learn.

Self ****in taught tho. Guys like RTS had international fullbacks mentoring them. In 2016 val was too busy being a star centre to focus on fb development. He was thrown in the deep end really. Barba left. Val wouldnt have started pre season til after xmas, then got injured in the trials. And once again, what class fullback was there teachin him? None

General Melchett has some good advice:

" Make a note of that Darling. Heavy machine guns for fullbacks."

That should help Val out.
