This is also something the hooker trains for. It's not just to tire out the markers. It is to try to make them do a 1-on-1 tackle. That means a quicker ptb, metre metres on the next ruck and/or a retreating defensive line for an edge to attack.

One of the ways that teams know if their hooker is doing a good job is how many times he can create one-on-one tackle situations. 100% Brailey trains for this, and the quicker foot-speed middles would too. Williams and McInnes are the best at it.
I remember Aaron Raper being so good at it that he was being accused of taking voluntary tackles to get a fast play the ball.

Anyone else notice that McInnes seemed visibly delighted as part of the Sharks team to comprehensively smash the St George Dragons 40 - 8? Any former loyalty to the red V has completely dissipated.

It'd probably explain why he doesn't run so often. Blayke is playing 6 tackle chess, thinking about the hit ups after the currrent one and how to position his forwards for those runs to maximise play the ball speed, one-on-ones and which opportunities to take from the calls coming from Matty and Nicho.

I hadn't really thought about it like that before, but when you do you you have to appreciate what he's doing for the team. He doesn't usually get those things wrong. It has to be a big reason why our attack is so slick.

Yup.

Even for young players it is something they learn. Rather than just "scoot and make 10m", it is better to scoot and run directly at the A defender. He is going to either commit or hold. If he commits, you draw and pass to try put your runner in a hole. If he holds, you either take the space behind the ruck, or find a runner running directly at A, and he looks for a quick play the ball.

If you watched footy in the 90's and saw Steve Walters the play was "no markers / one marker = scoot and take the metres". It's different now. A quick ptb is more important that 10m. Teams will give up 8-10m scoots from hookers all day if it means they can get 3 players in and win the tackle.

I'll find a good example of my hooker doing it and I'll DM it to you.

I like the old Toothy, Courage by the Bucket bloodspits, but i think his Hooker days are gone. I want my Lock to be the Biggest Body i can get on the grnd ( Ideally bigger than Dale) . Mickennis stays bench back up, utility for mine, i'm just not sure who he's backing up:oops:!

I can't open or "widen" the photo. Looks like a well grazed Dave Taylor from afar. The dumbest( Think Fergo Category) laziest ( i'm trying to think of an equal/-someone will) , wasted potential ( Think Grezmuuhl) to ever reach FG. HOWEVER-I would take a Dave Taylor in his prime in a GF contesting Side ( Think short side play Rabbitohs V Rorters Length of field try). "1 game 1 match winning game- that's all we need from you"

Dave was playing the biggest kid in u12s role right into first grade. Then people wanted him to stop & play structures & corridors like everyone else. Was no longer the game he enjoyed I think but money was great & he didn't have the skills to navigate that well.

Serious question... why do you want a really big body at lock? You want a low minute impact guy with a bit of intimidation factor to get you through the softening up period? Props hold their channel but big guy can pop up anywhere? Something like that?

I've gone through this with a couple of kids this year. Standout players on their teams the last few years, everyone pumping up their tyres etc. but playing low divs with no structure. They haven't learned yet that when you play good teams, you can't expect chip and chase from your own end on tackle 2 and score every time. From their PoV the team is there to serve them, rather than them being a cog in the machine. They are teenagers, so they are bound to think that... but they need to grow out of that attitude eventually.

Obviously Dave Taylor never got called on his bullshit, or when he did his parents just moved him somewhere else to be pandered to.

I got told once I had to work for my team. I didn't get it for a while cause as a teenager I was like "I'm scoring every ****ing point we get, only **** making rep sides & cleaning up the awards, WTF?"

The opposite is just as apt. For the kid who is a team player, follows instructions and does all the talking... the parents sit there and say "I don't why the coach loves that kid. He does nothing.".

Pretty much. I think we are going to go away from the small ballplayer again, cause now we will see more big strong FR sized locks, than can ALSO ballplay, tackle all day, and run hard and strong. What was it Jack Gibson said about big players as the game goes on? Teams/positions are nrly becoming uniform in size as it is.

It's a touch football tactic basically the attacker runs touches defender plays the ball, try to catch defence offside

Play to your strengths.

If you have a good player who is smaller but quicker, more agile, you play him. If your best player for jersey is a bigger bloke, play him.
If you need a lock - see who the best player available is and sign them.
If every team has a big lock every team is used to playing against all big middles. The smaller quicker bloke can be a point of difference.

Is Cameron Murray (95kg) a significantly worse lock than Isaah Yeo (106kg)?

There is definitely some uniforming though in general.
