I just watched the highlights again and Trindall was in everything. He just seems to want to be where the ball is. I'm loving the way he makes the defence commit before passing, and that flick pass to Nikora to put Talakai over was class. Can't imagine our incumbent half doing that, can anyone else?

Chad would have 'game managed' and 'organised' a player into position to flick pass for him with his gun talking game

We've already re-signed Chad mate.

Need to extend him again ASAP to ensure the next up and comer behind Trindall also leaves - may as well go for 3 from 3

The idea of the inside ball is to draw the defender to the ball carrier then by doing so you great a gap for the inside receiver to go through.

Chad doesn't do this, but to be quite fair, no one does, it's used as just as a simple hit up.

This - yes the inside ball can serve an attacking and/or strategic purpose at times and I appreciate the analysis and all in this thread but in nearly every scenario and majority of cases from every playmaker in the comp it is just a conservative nothing play for a simple hit up cause nothing else was on opportunity wise, an opportunity closed or the play maker did not have the ability to create an opportunity. The pace at which you do it and in what part of the field you do it can also determine it's effectiveness.

Brailey for instance can do an inside ball on the oppositions tryline at lighting speed (speed is key) after a dummy (important) to a forward running full steam on the inside and this can get you a try. the old corey hughes/sticky sharks pet play as it were.

The ol outside in play like Gal did with Gardner is a different thing altogether

tbf to playmakers rugby league is a simple game and there is only so many ways to try to get around or through a brick wall that stands 10 metres in front of you every set.
the chip and chase over the top is the play that is seriously underused in the modern game, I understand why that is but yea

Soccer isn't all long breakaway passes down the wing and shots on goal. alot of time is spent with the backs just passing and shuffling the ball around between themselves working out the next move. it's dull and predictable but it's apart of the game.

This has gone to sht... I think the reason why some hate inside balls here is because of Chad doing it so much and how often he did it when it seemed there was an outside option, there were games he went inside ball almost all the time - pretty sure if you go through game threads you’ll see it a lot. There is a time and place, just don’t think CT is an example of the good ones.

That's right, the context and quantity matters. down on the scoreboard and struggling to break the line you don't want to see a set of slow motion inside balls from your halfback. you want them to at least try something or offer up something less predictable even if you are just battling for field position and not necessarily on the attack deep in the opponents half. Defenses adjust for it easily in plenty of time when it's just run as a simple hit up or carry. Robbo copped **** for it cause there wasn't many other elements to his game and it becomes frustrating knowing his only tricks are a show and go and it got compounded by settling touch finders and terrible bombs.

Conversely a player like SJ doesn't cop as much **** for inside balls because we know how much he contributes week to week and is capable of in attack. In his bad form period yes SJ's inside balls gave me the absolute ****s knowing he could do much better things with it!

Wizard you thought Trindall should look to quit if he didn't get picked ahead of Moylan for last weekends game and then he didn't get named anywhere in the 21
But still ended up being given an opportunity. If he had your attitude he would have stomped out of the club crying, but instead he got to play another NRL game and play 'awesome' and make a stronger case for future selection.
Yeah being patient and earning/deserving your opportunity is a good quality. Simply not being Chad Townsend doesn't count as earning or deserving an opportunity.

Regarding the hypothetical games where Chad went inside 'almost all the time' (I say hypothetical because I think that is a big exaggeration) how much consideration do you think goes to a specific game plan from the coach to target back at the ruck a lot against that team? I'd assume none but in reality that is the most likely reason you would see a lot of sending forwards back on the inside.

Never said he should quit You don’t need to twist my words to make your argument look better - just said I wouldn’t be mad/suprised if he starts to look elsewhere - Which is fair, because at the time I said it if he finds himself behind Moylan he definitely should look around because Moylan has been trash.
I found your argument back to be abit brain dead because he’s off contract now and if he can’t find a path to first grade here whilst other teams are trying to sign him up then we probably lose him. But you actually thinking it’s a better quality to fill in for whoever when they are injured and wait his time rather then going for it when he’s clearly ready then that is bad advice and advice I don’t think his manager would be giving.

This could very realistically be a perfectly good tactic though (other than being 'slow motion').

You are behind on the board but their middle defence is exhausted, you use change of direction and punch forwards at them again and again.
Best case scenario is a linebreak through them or offload with a spine player backing up. Otherwise hoping the pressure will compress their line to give you the space out wide for your big move.

Quality always matters of course but a couple boring forwards on the inside when you are down on the board late in the game could still be an intentionally used tactic not just lazy predictable & pointless.

It's a better quality for him to want to earn the position and actually do so than be gifted it because Wizard on Sharks Forever has decided that he is better than a player Wizard despises.
I want him to work hard and have faith he will get the opportunities he deserves (and actually get them too). If he can't find a path to play first grade, if he can't back himself (and then deliver) to get better than Chad Townsend then how good really is he?

I think in many cases the advice the manager gives is the best advice for the manager not necessarily the player.

If another club can offer him more money than we can then he may well leave even if he was our #1 half
If they can't offer more money but can offer a walk up start then I couldn't really blame him either but I don't believe in gifting a start.
If Chad Townsend is 1% better than Trindall (I know you don't think he is but pretend for a moment the coach would know better) and we are still in hunt for finals then it makes sense for Bomber to pick Chad.

Yeah but there is evidence to show that the more Trindall plays the better he is and the more he offers.

He's development is very important but, if we had a quality half that was keeping Trindall at bay, then fine, Trindall should wait. But, we don't, we have Townsend.

If Trindall has to wait behind Townsend, he has every right to look for other options. Flanagan did it.

Exactly, apparently that’s not a good quality according to some though. He should wait until Chad Townsend or whoever is injured

All of the above is correct.

Also, 36 year old Benji Marshall is still a 7 in this competition, might that suggest a lack of quality halves in the game?
A promising 7 is not going to wait for his opportunity when other clubs will give him that opportunity straight away.

How many times has a young half moving on before he's had decent first grade time not worked out? Player managers are probably encouraging moving as it'd be on the back of a bigger paycheck (and a bigger cut for them), but I doubt it leads to more success in the long term than waiting for a chance at your current club (annd Trindall definitely has that chance as the front runner)

If Trindall doesn’t have 20 touches for 20 try assists per game (all outside balls) he can move on as far as I’m concerned.

What if they are not inside balls but turning the outside man in balls. Does that still count ?

So... if for some strange reason Bomber gave Chad the freedom to look at other options and he got picked up by dogs, broncos, tigers or dragons (all looking at 7s), then we put all our hope in Trindall... what if he doesn't work out? Wouldn't be the first half to fade into obscurity after starting well. I am pretty sure Chad won us his first four games.

There was also a time when everyone was begging for Chad to play with Carney, but Flanno kept picking Robson.

I like the look of Trindall, I hope next year he gets to play NSW Cup and leaves Bomber no choice but to put him in, but for now Chad isn't our biggest problem. We are scoring plenty of points and you could argue that is from Chad managing the team to positions on the field we can attack from.

We need to fix our defensive structures and our discipline. If we did that we'd win more games than not.

Chad is also a problem in defence too

Has the Trindall leaving talk been mentioned anywhere by anyone, or is it just forum hysteria? Great work on whoever’s behalf to generate so much discussion out of it, but it doesn’t seem like there is anything to suggest he’s going anywhere. Also doesn’t seem to be an impatient piece of **** that wants his opportunity now, rather than playing his role for the team.

Going off the culture Morris looks to have created, I would bet Trindall is happy to play second fiddle to an experienced, premiership winning half and wait for his time, be it here or somewhere else

It’s easy to put all your hope in a rookie half while it’s working out. He’s had a pretty small sample size of games to go off, but I’m glad they are here and there during the season and not a must win game like the finals.

Snowy? I guess that’s a source, but he’s wrong more than he is right with these sort of calls.

Do you really think he would go to the Dogs? Maybe if he was offered a bunch of dosh and a first grade spot it might happen, but what else do you expect from a club with a culture like that? The only way we could match it is if we didn’t have chad, but then we’d be making the same mistake they would signing an unproven half for overs.

Yeah I haven't heard anything but maybe he has.

Dogs have cash to spend, so yeah if they gave him a sizable amount I could see him there. They just bought Cotric, and are looking for more.

Tbh I can see any player playing at any club if the money is right. There arent many Adam Reynolds in the game that take unders to play for the club they love anymore.

Money would be a massive incentive, even more so considering what’s happened to rugby league in the last 12 months. I wouldn’t blame him for it, but would you blame the club for not matching it and pushing out an experienced half for a promising one?

If the club were in a position in the next 1-2 years to push for a premiership i'd stick with the experienced half.

We have to be able to recognise talent, and make difficult calls on who we want to build the team around. It will at times mean letting go of more experienced players.

We have a young team, a really good young team that we can build on for years to come.

SJ is in career best (consistent) form, sign him again and let him mentor Trindall.
