AFL player accused of assaulting female
21:10 AEST Mon Nov 22 2010

Port Adelaide AFL player Daniel Motlop has been accused of assaulting a friend's girlfriend.

Adelaide police have formally charged the 28-year-old from Largs Bay with assault, following an incident at Glenelg on April 25 this year.

Motlop did not attend an Adelaide Magistrates Court hearing on Monday and was represented by a lawyer.

The forward's case returns to court in January.

St Kilda Photo Scandal

Saints, police in nude photo probe

Al Paton From: Herald Sun December 20, 2010 2:29PM

UPDATE 8.20pm: THE girl at the centre of the St Kilda nude photo scandal has been ordered by the Federal Court of Melbourne to stop publishing the images.

St Kilda today went to the Federal Court seeking an order against the girl.

Justice Marshall ordered that the girl be "restrained from publishing or continuing to publish the photographs" until further order.

St Kilda said the order was to "protect players’ privacy against the unauthorised and legal distribution of images".

Earlier, the girl said that she loves to cause trouble.

The Saints are in damage control and AFL players have expressed outrage after two lewd photos were posted on the internet.

The first explicit photo was of Nick Riewoldt and Zac Dawson. The second explicit photo featured Nick Dal Santo.

This afternoon the Saints released a statement saying they were in talks with Victoria Police and the club's lawyers after the first photo appeared on Facebook.

The photo of Riewoldt and Dawson was removed after the statement was released, but it was then replaced by the photo of Dal Santo.

The photos were posted by the same girl who made a complaint against two St Kilda players not featured in the photos earlier this year. The teenager claimed she fell pregnant after having sex with players she first met during a school visit.

An AFL investigation into the schoolgirl sex claims found the AFL players had not acted inappropriately and no police charges were laid.

The photos are branded with the words: "Merry Christmas courtesy of the St Kilda schoolgirl."

It is not clear who took the photo or under what circumstances.

The girl who posted the photos has allegedly tried to sell the images to several media outlets.

"St Kilda Football Club has been made aware of an image of two of its players, which has been posted on the internet," the Saints said in a statement.

"The club can confirm that the image was not distributed with the players’ consent.

"The club can also confirm that the photo was not taken by the person responsible for posting it online and believes that it was obtained illegally.

"As the matter is subject to discussions between St Kilda Football Club, Victoria Police and its legal representatives, the club is not in a position to make any further comment at this stage."

The AFL released a statement tonight saying it was "deeply disappointed" in the publication of the images.

"The images in question were not taken by the person who has distributed them, and the images have been circulated without the consent of the players," the AFL said.

"The players in question should not have their privacy disregarded in this way and the AFL is being kept up to date by the St Kilda Football Club and its legal representatives in dealing with this matter."

The AFL Players Association said footballers were entitled to the same privacy as other members of the community.

"Players are outraged at the gross invasion of privacy committed today. They are sick and tired of being seen as ‘fair game’ by some in the community," the statement said.

"Just like any other person, AFL players have a right to have their privacy protected.

"This latest incident adds further weight to calls for stronger legal protection for high-profile people who are subjected to these kinds of seemingly malicious actions.

"Publicising this activity can encourage further gross breaches of privacy, creating a vicious cycle where players’ reputations are unfairly damaged."

Police said they had been advised that the posting of the photo was a civil matter.

There's more explicit photos of St Kilda players to come, says teen girl

There's more explicit photos of St Kilda players to come, says teen girl

Anthony Dowsley From: Herald Sun December 21, 2010 12:00AM

UPDATE 10.49am: ST Kilda star Nick Riewoldt says he just wants to put the nude photo scandal behind him and enjoy Christmas with his family.

The St Kilda captain also said at a press conference this morning he doesn't know the girl who published explicit photos of him and other players on her Facebook page, but is disappointed in her actions.

But the teen who has released explicit photos of St Kilda players Riewoldt, Zac Dawson and Nick Dal Santo on the internet says she plans to upload at least a dozen more, despite a court order forbidding it.

Photos released by the girl on her Facebook site yesterday, showing the players in various states of undress in a hotel room, have outraged the AFL Players' Association and St Kilda. The club yesterday asked police to investigate.

This morning Riewoldt said he had done nothing wrong.

"I can’t understand why someone I don't know would want to denigrate me in this way. I don’t know the person. I’m just very disappointed and hurt.

"That a person I have no association with has sought to impugn me is a cause of great distress to myself, my girlfriend, my family and my friends.

"Given that I have absolutely no association with the person at any point. I am at a loss to understand what their motivation could be."

Riewoldt said he had no association with the girl who published the picture, but it had caused untold hurt to him and his family.

"For the record I have never met the person who posted my photograph. A person who I have no association with … has caused great distress to me, my girlfriend and family," Riewoldt said.

"I don't know the woman and it's very hard for me to comment on someone I don't know. I find that very difficult. That's why it's the cause of such distress."

The Saints' captain said the picture in question was taken about a year ago by teammate Sam Gilbert in Miami. He said he had woken up, got out of bed, and the photo was taken but he told Gilbert to delete it and believed it had been destroyed.

"I didn't expect it to be kept on a camera, and then downloaded onto his computer and obviously didn't expect it would be taken from his computer without knowledge or consent."

He told the gathered media contingent this morning that despite the distress, and his disappointment in Gilbert, he refused to be affected by the scandal.

"This has all hit me like a tonne of bricks yesterday.

"I'm not going to be the victim to this sort of garbage. I'm going to move on and enjoy Christmas with my family."

The girl, a jilted former lover of another Saint, is threatening to release a "scrapbook" of damaging images and text messages.

She has vowed to continue posting images each day until the police force her to stop.

The 17-year-old tweeted last night that it had been a big day and her fans should keep an eye out for more news this morning.

The teen also:

CLAIMED she was setting up a new Facebook account after hers was shut down;

THANKED people for their support;

CLAIMED she had not been served with a copy of the court order made yesterday banning her from posting the images or been contacted by police.

The Herald Sun has been told the photos were obtained from a player's computer.

But the girl denies it, saying she took them in a Melbourne hotel room this year.

The Federal Court yesterday issued an order restraining the girl and Facebook from posting more photos. It applies until a hearing on December 23.

The girl, now 17, said she had been unaware of the order until told by the Herald Sun, but vowed to defy it.

"I'm going to put on some new ones (photos) tomorrow and more the next day," she said.

"My credibility was gone out the window the moment this all came out.

"I'm a 17-year-old girl. I can't take on an AFL club, I can't take on St Kilda. I can't take on the AFL.

"I've had so many court orders placed against me."

The girl claimed this year she had become pregnant to an AFL star after meeting players following a match. An investigation followed.

She has since vainly attempted to sell the photos.

In red lettering across the photos she posted, she wrote "Merry Christmas, Courtesy of The St Kilda Schoolgirl".

She told the Herald Sun yesterday she wanted to exact revenge on St Kilda and the AFL over her treatment.

"It's because I hate the AFL and I hate St Kilda," she said.

"Words can't describe how I feel. I have 19 more photos ... They will be all up by the end of this week. I just want revenge. I want them to know what it's like to have your reputation destroyed."

St Kilda said yesterday it believed the photos had been obtained illegally.

"The club can confirm that the image was not distributed with the players' consent," it said.

"The club can also confirm that the photo was not taken by the person responsible for posting it online and believes that it was obtained illegally.

A Victoria Police spokesman said it had been advised it was a civil matter. No official criminal investigation has been instigated.

Saints CEO Michael Nettlefold has disputed claims by the girl that the club had given her any financial aid, stating that at no stage had it paid for her to stay in city hotels.

"She has a history of wild accusations," he said.

"I can categorically tell you it is complete nonsense St Kilda Football Club paid for anything."

The players were told of the images soon after they were posted about midday.

The girl, who has also alleged sexual misconduct against a player from another club, has continued to socialise with AFL players, including Collingwood premiership players.

The AFL Players' Association said players were outraged at the "gross invasion of privacy".

"Just like any other person, AFL players have a right to have their privacy protected," it said.

"This latest incident adds further weight to calls for stronger legal protection for high-profile people subjected to these kinds of seemingly malicious actions."

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt nude pictures make the internet blush
Staff writers From: news.com.au December 21, 2010 3:46PM

A VERY strange thing happened today. The internet didn't start a Nick Riewoldt meme...

Usually, when something saucy or confidential – or both – gets posted to the web, there's a concerted effort by pranksters to give it the widest possible audience.

Not so with the nude pictures of Nick Riewoldt and St Kilda teammates Nick Dal Santo and Zac Dawson that were posted to Facebook this week.

The pictures are still around, of course. It's pretty hard to scrub things off the internet once they're out there.

But there doesn't seem to have been an effort to keep them in the public eye, even after they were censored by Facebook – a move which usually drives pranksters to action.

There only appears to be a few Twitter users still keeping the pictures alive today. Everyone else is following the news stories about Riewoldt's reaction.

Surprisingly, the pictures don't even appear to have started a meme – making them the first embarrassing photos in history to survive on the web for more than a day without inspiring a new Tumblr blog.

Perhaps they're just too tasteless, or perhaps they make the internet blush.

The closest thing to a meme that the photos have sparked is a new Twitter hashtag, #dickileaks, which is currently trending in Australia. Here are some of the highlights:

@grayra You can't help but wonder what is wrong with the world when the big news story in Aus has the hashtag #dickileaks - funny and sad.

@DeanWinter4 I remember when we used to put 'gate' at the end of controversial stuff, not 'leaks'. #dickileaks

@wannastartanew has Liz Hurley seen the #dickileaks pics? She may want to change her favourite code.

@mrmattymalone The AFL player collector cards are going to be a little different this year I think. #dickileaks

@beyourbird the scandal's gross, but the hashtag's HILARIOUS. amazing end to the year, twitter #dickileaks

Caps, why do you bother commenting on the AFL thread if you don't have any interest in it.

Fair dinkum, if you don't like the game, don't comment in the thread.

It's just like the tools on Rleague who go into the soccer section to bag soccer.

Give it a rest ffs.

First of all, it was a legitimate alternative to the reasons stated in the article as to why this crap didn't go viral.

Second, ****er up cupcake. What are you gonna be like when I am intentionally posting antagonistic stuff in here?

Merry Christmas, Pete.

Fair enough Caps,

Valid point and point taken.

Merry Christmas to you, man.

Girl at centre of AFL St Kilda photo storm to face court tomorrow

UPDATE 5.15pm: LAWYERS for St Kilda Football Club and Sam Gilbert have used the internet to call for a teen photo leaker to appear in court tomorrow.

The cyberspace message posted on Ustream has also been sent to the 17-year-old's father's email address.

It recommends she be at court at 10.30am, Thursday, and to have legal representation.

The girl says she is not due back in Melbourne until after the court hearing has finished.

The post reads; "Good afternoon...My name is Brad Ross and I am a partner at Rigby Cooke Lawyers.

"We are the solicitors for the St Kilda Football Club and also Sam Gilbert.
"There is a Court Hearing tomorrow in the Federal Court at 305 William Street, Melbourne.

"The Court Hearing will take place at 10.30am before Justice Marshall in Court 6A.

"You should be at Court tomorrow. If you do not attend, the Court can make orders in your absence. You should have legal representation tomorrow.''

It goes on to explain that on Monday this week the Federal court ordered that until 4pm, December 23 she was restrained from publishing or continuing to publish the photographs referred to in the affidavit.

Secondly, she take all reasonable steps to cease publishing via her account with Facebook the photographs or any other photograph or image sourced from Gilbert's computer.

It comes after the girl today said AFL players weren't the role models they may seem to be.

"I know a lot of people think AFL players are great role models, but in reality once you get to know them it's just so much different to what you'd imagine," she says in a video.

She said they were attractive because they were good-looking and had money, but sometimes their behaviour was flawed.

The 17-year-old posted a series of short live streamed videos online in the wake of the photos being uploaded on Facebook.

In one of the videos, she declares: "Do you know how f---ing angry I am at everyone? Oh my God, I could f--king scream" before unleashing a piercing scream.

The videos, filmed in Queensland, see the girl say she would kill someone when her mobile rings.

She also defends her story, saying she is telling the truth.

"You guys have got to help me out. Seriously, I need all the support," the teen says in the five-minute video.

"I need my friend who was in Adelaide with me who can prove (something).

Lisa, where are you baby?"

One 11-second video shows the teen in a bikini by a pool at night.
She also claims she will unleash allegations against Riewoldt's manager Ricky Nixon in the coming days.

Last night the girl vowed to post more scandalous pictures on the internet, saying the next lot would be of Carlton and Sydney players.

This came as she pledged to continue taking revenge on St Kilda, a club she says mistreated her, and as Riewoldt told of his devastation at a nude picture of him with semi-naked teammate Zac Dawson posted on the girl's Facebook page.

Speaking on radio this morning, AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said the league would continue to provide support to the girl.

He said the AFL had met with the teenager more than 20 times and offered counselling.

"We will continue to offer support to this young girl, because that's what our program's about," he told 3AW.

"And we will continue to support Nick Riewoldt ... there are no winners out of this."

Mr Demetriou said he was "absolutely certain" Riewoldt was telling the truth.
"Everybody's got to modify their lifestyle in this day and age," he said.

"We've got to get into the age of providing new education systems to our players and young people. This is an interactive age, people using Facebook and Twitter, and it can do considerable harm."

Mr Demetriou said he was told of the existence of the photos by media outlets three weeks ago, and later by Riewoldt's manager Ricky Nixon.

The saga has the potential to rip at the fabric of the Saints after Riewoldt could not hide his displeasure with teammate Sam Gilbert, who he said had not deleted the photos taken in a Miami hotel more than a year ago.

Gilbert last night apologised to Riewoldt and the club for his part in the drama.
Part of the damaging content the girl plans to upload is a video she claims she has taken of AFL players in compromising positions.

She told the Herald Sun she was involved in group sex with AFL players, none of whose pictures have been released.

A Facebook conversation purported to be between the girl and an AFL player discussing a group sex session has been obtained by the Herald Sun.

Riewoldt yesterday denied he knew of the group sex claims.
"I've got no idea about that," he said.

"It's not part of our culture and I'm not aware of any text messages."

Although the teenager did not post any more revealing photos in the wake of a Federal Court order banning her and Facebook from exhibiting images, she says she is determined to keep posting images when things "cool down".

She said she was also dismayed at Riewoldt's version of events that led to the photos being posted.

"It's all incorrect," she said.

"After I heard the press conference I literally punched the wall. He just read a statement from a piece of paper."

She maintains she took the photos at a Melbourne hotel herself and downloaded them from Gilbert's laptop.

"I just want everybody to know the truth," she said.

The girl says she was offered hush money by a football contact: "I was originally offered money ... to like just not speak to any media about it." She said the amount was $20,000.

The girl, who cannot be named, said she didn't want her Twitter site pulled down by transmitting more images.

Player manager Nixon says lawyers have been engaged in a potential civil case and matters have been referred to police.

Meanwhile, Riewoldt, 28, told a packed press conference yesterday he had never met the girl who posted the images.

"If I'd done something wrong I'd be happy to cop that, but I've done nothing wrong," he said.

"I'm not going to be the victim to this sort of garbage. I'm going to move on and enjoy Christmas with my family."

Riewoldt said Gilbert took the photo on a holiday in Miami more than 12 months ago.

He said he was disappointed the defender and fellow Queenslander didn't delete the photo immediately when
asked to.

"I asked that it be deleted then and there and clearly it wasn't and I'm bitterly disappointed at my teammate for that," he said.

He was made aware the photo still existed several weeks ago and saw it for the first time on Monday.

Riewoldt said he had no association with the teen who published the now infamous photo and no idea what her motives were.

"For the record I have never met the person who posted my photograph. A person who I have no association with caused great distress to me, my girlfriend and family," he said.

Riewoldt and Gilbert have said "not a lot" about the controversial photo.
'I think it's up to him to approach me, to be honest," Riewoldt said.
He would consider his legal options in the next few days.

A separate photo of St Kilda star Nick Dal Santo also appeared on the Facebook page.

AFL TV rights decision due as Fox confirms footy channel to be revived

AFL TV rights decision due as Fox confirms footy channel to be revived
Mike Sheahan, Michael Warner
From: Herald Sun
April 28, 2011 12:00am

UPDATE 12pm: THE AFL is set to announce a new TV rights deal this afternoon, with Foxtel set to revive its dedicated footy channel.

An announcement about football's biggest-ever pay day is expected at 2.15pm.

League coffers will swell by significantly more than $1 billion from the sale of the AFL's lucrative TV and internet rights for the next five years.

Channel 7 and pay-TV giant Foxtel have secured the AFL's broadcast contracts, with the online rights going to Telstra.

A dedicated footy channel, to be called Foxtel AFL, will be part of the new deal, after Fox Footy Channel ran on Foxtel from 2002 to 2006.

The Herald Sun also understands Foxtel will show the Brownlow Medal live, simultaneously with Channel 7.

But the testy negotiations are not over, with Network Ten expected to argue it has first right of refusal on any on-sold TV timeslots.

Seven and Ten were expected to bid together, but fell out in recent weeks over money and a court dispute involving defecting Seven executive James Warburton.

Channel 9 has emerged as a possible home for Saturday or Sunday afternoon football should Seven opt not to broadcast all four of its free-to-air matches.

The windfall will trigger a push by the game's 800 players for a bumper pay rise in their Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations.

Players have told the AFL they want a fixed 27 per cent cut of all future revenues, which, on last year's figures, equates to $220 million.
